Short answer: iOS 26.1 did not come with publicly documented, universal Galaxy Watch support for iPhone. Apple released iOS 26.1 on November 3, 2025, but its official release notes do not mention Galaxy Watch compatibility or a general third-party smartwatch notification system.
The rumor came from references reportedly found in iOS 26.1 beta code, including “Notification Forwarding” and “AccessoryExtension.” Those strings suggested Apple was developing a way for selected third-party accessories to receive iPhone notifications. They did not prove that every Galaxy Watch would work with every iPhone, or that iOS 26.1 shipped the feature in finished form.

Where the Galaxy Watch rumor came from
In September 2025, reporting on iOS 26.1 beta code identified references to a feature called “Notification Forwarding.” The apparent design would let an iPhone designate a third-party accessory to receive selected notifications. Additional “AccessoryExtension” references suggested a broader framework for compatible accessories.
The report also indicated that forwarding might be limited to one accessory at a time. That was a code-level observation, not a confirmed final-user rule. The original evidence was reported by Android Central, not announced by Apple or Samsung.

That distinction matters. A hidden beta reference can show what Apple is testing or preparing, but it cannot establish that the feature survived development, is enabled in the public release, or works with a particular watch model.
What iOS 26.1 actually shipped
Apple released iOS 26.1 on November 3, 2025, according to its developer release announcement. Apple’s public iOS 26.1 release notes document SDK changes and resolved issues, but do not identify Galaxy Watch support or a universal third-party smartwatch notification feature.
The most accurate description is therefore:
- Confirmed: iOS 26.1 was released on November 3, 2025.
- Reported in beta code: “Notification Forwarding,” “AccessoryExtension,” and a possible one-accessory limitation.
- Not confirmed by Apple’s public release notes: universal Galaxy Watch notification support in iOS 26.1.
- Still dependent on more than iOS: Samsung’s companion software, watch firmware, model support, and regional availability.
Apple’s existing developer documentation describes notification forwarding as part of the Apple Watch and watchOS model. It does not establish compatibility with Galaxy Watch: Apple’s notification documentation.
Notification forwarding is not full Galaxy Watch compatibility
Even if Apple enables a system-level notification route, that would be a narrower change than making a Galaxy Watch a full iPhone companion.

| Capability | What notification forwarding might provide | What it would not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications | Selected iPhone alerts displayed on a compatible watch | Support for every Galaxy Watch generation or every app |
| Calls | Possibly an incoming-call alert | Reliable call answering, cellular calling, or audio routing |
| Messages | Notification previews and perhaps limited actions | Full iMessage-style replies or complete messaging support |
| Health data | Nothing directly | ECG, blood-pressure, sleep, or Apple Health synchronization |
| Watch apps | Nothing directly | Installing and managing the full Wear OS ecosystem from an iPhone |
| Payments | Nothing directly | Samsung Wallet or region-specific payment support |
| Pairing | A standardized accessory setup path | Compatibility with every watch model, firmware, or cellular variant |
Apple may provide the operating-system mechanism, but Samsung would still need to support it through the Galaxy Wearable app, watch software, and model-specific firmware. A watch that can display an alert is not necessarily able to reply, handle calls, sync health data, or use payments.
Why the European Union matters
The regulatory background is real. On March 19, 2025, the European Commission adopted measures requiring Apple to improve interoperability between iOS and third-party connected devices. The measures include access related to smartwatch notifications and notification selection.
The Commission’s published timetable called for a beta version of iOS-notification interoperability by the end of 2025 and implementation for end users by June 1, 2026. See the Commission’s March 19, 2025 decision, its interoperability proceedings page, and its connected-device explanation.

The Digital Markets Act applies to the relevant European regulatory context, while Apple may vary implementation by region. A compatible accessory may also need an approved companion app, updated firmware, and Samsung’s own support.

Nor does the regulation require Apple to reproduce every Apple Watch feature on competing watches. It can require access to specific iPhone capabilities without guaranteeing Apple Health integration, iMessage replies, ECG, blood-pressure features, Apple Pay, or the complete Apple Watch experience.
How to check a specific Galaxy Watch
There is no safe blanket promise for “Galaxy Watch plus iPhone.” Compatibility can vary by country, iPhone model, watch generation, Bluetooth or cellular configuration, firmware, and companion-app version.
- Check the iPhone at Settings > General > About and record the exact iOS version and model.
- Record the Galaxy Watch model and firmware version.
- Update the official Samsung companion software and the watch firmware.
- Make sure the watch is not still configured as the active companion to another phone.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled and place the devices close together during setup.
- Check the iPhone’s notification permissions and the notification controls available in Samsung’s current companion app.
Do not treat successful Bluetooth pairing as proof of full support. A watch may appear connected while lacking a supported route for notification forwarding or other services.

- Notifications containing images or action buttons
For each test, note whether the alert arrives, whether it is delayed, whether it can be dismissed, whether the watch can reply or take an action, and whether behavior changes after an iPhone restart, a Focus mode change, or force-quitting the companion app. A notification that appears on the watch does not establish that replies, calls, health syncing, or payments work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if notifications fail
- Recheck iPhone notification permissions and notification previews.
- Review notification categories in the Samsung companion app, using the labels shown by your current app version and region.
- Temporarily disable Focus or Do Not Disturb.
- Confirm that the watch is connected through the intended companion app, not merely listed in Bluetooth settings.
- Update iOS, the companion app, and watch firmware.
- Restart both devices.
- Remove and re-pair the watch only as a final step, because resetting it can erase local data or configuration.
Common failure patterns include receiving only calls or messages, delayed alerts after background activity is restricted, notification previews being hidden for privacy, and a feature working in one region or on one watch generation but not another.
Should an iPhone owner buy a Galaxy Watch?
Buy one only if you have confirmed the exact model, region, app, and firmware combination—or if you expect to use the watch with a Samsung or other Android phone. Samsung hardware, Wear OS apps, fitness features, sleep tracking, and a possible future Android switch can all be valid reasons to choose it.
A Galaxy Watch is a poor fit if you require guaranteed iPhone pairing, dependable messaging replies, Apple Health integration, reliable calls, cellular functions, ECG, blood-pressure features, or one support channel when something fails. The rumored or regulatory notification path should not be the sole reason to purchase one.

For dependable iPhone integration, Apple Watch remains the straightforward choice. Garmin is a stronger alternative for buyers who prioritize fitness and battery life and can accept a different app and messaging experience. Google Pixel Watch is primarily Android-oriented and should not be treated as an iPhone fallback.

What remains unverified
The beta references were meaningful evidence that Apple was working on third-party accessory notification forwarding. They were not proof that iOS 26.1 universally enabled Galaxy Watch notifications. The public Apple documentation supplied for iOS 26.1 does not confirm that claim.
