iOS 26 developer beta 5, released on August 5, 2025, was primarily a usability-polish update. Build 23A5308g restored familiar navigation in Camera, returned a visible Select button to Mail, and included a hidden Apple Watch image asset that may point to a future display revision. The watch discovery is intriguing, but it is not confirmation of an Apple Watch Ultra 3 specification.
This is a historical look at beta 5, not a report on the latest iOS beta. Apple’s developer releases have since moved on to later iOS 26 builds and iOS 27 betas.

What was iOS 26 developer beta 5?
Apple released iOS 26 developer beta 5 on August 5, 2025, roughly two weeks after beta 4. Its build number was 23A5308g, replacing 23A5297i. It was a pre-release developer build, not a stable public release.
The update’s most useful changes addressed interaction complaints rather than adding major new capabilities. Camera navigation became optional again, Mail controls became easier to find, and several interface details received further Liquid Glass and animation refinements. Apple’s official release notes cover developer changes and known issues, but do not necessarily provide a complete consumer-facing list of every visual adjustment.

Camera gets a Classic Mode Switching option
Beta 5 added a Camera preference called Classic Mode Switching—also reported in some coverage as “Classic Mode.” When enabled, it restores the older swipe-based way of moving between camera modes, broadly resembling the interaction used in iOS 18.
iOS 26 introduced a redesigned, loupe-like mode-switching interface. Some users found that approach less familiar or less predictable. The new preference lets them use the previous navigation pattern without downgrading to iOS 18.
How to enable it
- Open Settings.
- Tap Camera.
- Find the mode-switching preference.
- Enable Classic Mode Switching or the equivalent label shown on your beta build.
- Open Camera and swipe across the mode selector to test the change.
This is an interaction setting only. It does not improve image quality, alter camera hardware, change image processing, or add shooting modes. The classic behavior may feel faster for long-time iPhone users, while people who prefer the redesigned interface can leave the option disabled. Apple could still rename, modify, or remove the setting before the final release.

Mail restores a visible Select button
In earlier iOS 26 betas, Mail’s message-selection controls were reportedly placed inside the three-dot ellipsis menu. Beta 5 returned a dedicated Select button to the message-list interface, making bulk actions more discoverable.
From the message list, users can tap Select, choose multiple messages, and then perform actions such as archiving or marking messages as read. The change does not introduce a new email-management system; it corrects the location of an important control.
AppleInsider also reported a Mail setting that lets users restore the earlier swipe direction. Because that detail was not documented consistently across every beta roundup, it is best treated as a separately reported beta preference rather than the central Mail feature. The exact control may also vary by screen, account configuration, device size, or later beta version.

The Apple Watch display asset
The more interesting discovery for watch buyers was hidden inside the beta’s software resources. AppleInsider found an Apple Watch-related image asset measuring 422 × 514 pixels. That is larger than the reported 410 × 502-pixel comparison asset associated with the Apple Watch Ultra 2.

The mismatch suggests that Apple may have been preparing software for a watch display that did not correspond to a known model at the time. However, a hidden image asset is evidence of a possible internal configuration—not a product announcement.
What the dimensions might mean
There are several plausible explanations:
- Higher pixel density: Apple could keep approximately the same physical display size while increasing the number of pixels.
- A larger active display: Apple could preserve roughly the existing pixel density while increasing the screen’s physical dimensions.
- Thinner bezels: A future Ultra could provide more active display area without a dramatic change to the outer case.
- Internal or unused software data: The asset could represent an experimental layout, rendering requirement, or product configuration that never ships.
AppleInsider’s calculations provide useful context, but they depend on assumptions. At the reported Ultra 2 density of approximately 335.83 pixels per inch, a display with the new asset’s dimensions would have a diagonal of roughly 1.98 inches if the density stayed constant—about 3.1% larger than an assumed 1.92-inch diagonal. If the physical diagonal stayed near 1.92 inches, the estimated density would rise to approximately 344.58 ppi.

Those figures are estimates based on software asset dimensions. They do not confirm a final screen size, pixel density, case dimension, bezel thickness, launch date, price, or even the name “Apple Watch Ultra 3.” Pixel dimensions can also reflect how an interface is rendered rather than the complete physical specification of a panel.

- Passcode entry and Control Center page-swiping animations reportedly became more responsive or “bouncy.”
- Apple added new splash screens for Apple Music, Journal, and Notes.
- Liquid Glass details, including Home Screen editing controls, received minor visual adjustments.
- Low-battery notifications reportedly changed in appearance or behavior.
- On iPad, the new menu bar reportedly remained visible when apps were used with an external display.
These observations were reported by MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and iClarified, alongside the more detailed Apple Watch asset analysis from AppleInsider. Some visual details can change between beta releases, so they should not be treated as permanent iOS 26 behavior without checking the version installed.

Should you install iOS 26 beta 5?
For developers testing apps against iOS 26, or for enthusiasts using a spare iPhone, beta 5 offered practical reasons to experiment—especially if the redesigned Camera controls or hidden Mail selection flow had been frustrating.
For most people, the changes were not compelling enough to justify putting an unstable operating system on a primary phone. Developer betas can contain bugs, compatibility problems, battery drain, unfinished interfaces, and data-loss risks. The Apple Watch asset also provides no immediate benefit to current Apple Watch owners.
If you install any developer beta, back up the iPhone first, avoid using a mission-critical device, and understand how you would recover or downgrade if necessary. Developer beta availability is separate from public beta availability. Consult Apple’s release-note index for known issues and workarounds, and do not assume that a toggle present in one beta will remain in the final software.
What beta 5 really tells us
The Camera and Mail changes were visible, user-facing corrections: Apple made older, more familiar interactions available again after beta feedback. The Apple Watch discovery was different. It was an observed software asset that may indicate a higher-resolution or slightly larger future Ultra display, but it stopped well short of confirming hardware.
In other words, iOS 26 beta 5 was notable less for a single headline feature than for Apple’s willingness to refine—and in some cases reverse—parts of the iOS 26 redesign. For watch fans, the 422 × 514-pixel asset was a useful clue, but the final product could differ substantially or never ship.
