The change does not disable either device, and “vintage” does not mean “obsolete.” Both can continue working, but official repairs are increasingly dependent on available parts, country, repair type, and service channel.
Apple’s current service-status page, published June 16, 2026, also lists the regular iPhone 11 Pro as vintage. The original listing change reported on September 30, 2025 covered the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Series 3 lineup.

What Apple changed
On September 30, 2025, Apple added the iPhone 11 Pro Max and all listed Apple Watch Series 3 configurations to its vintage-products list. The affected watches include aluminum, ceramic Edition, Hermès, Nike, and stainless-steel models in both 38mm and 42mm sizes.
The regular iPhone 11 Pro was not initially included in contemporary reports. Apple’s current list has since added it as well. The difference may reflect different last-distribution dates, possibly including longer availability through third-party resellers, but Apple has not publicly confirmed the reason.

Apple’s current list is available at Apple’s vintage and obsolete products page.
“Vintage” is not the same as “obsolete”
Apple defines a product as vintage when it stopped distributing it more than five but fewer than seven years ago. Apple may still provide service and parts for vintage products, but availability is not guaranteed.
A product becomes obsolete more than seven years after Apple stopped distributing it. Apple generally discontinues hardware service for obsolete products, and service providers cannot order parts through Apple’s official system. Local laws and material restrictions can create country-specific exceptions.

What it means for iPhone 11 Pro Max owners
The iPhone 11 Pro Max can still make calls, send messages, use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, run compatible apps, take photos, and access Apple services. Vintage status does not prevent normal use.
When the vintage listing was reported in September 2025, the iPhone 11 Pro Max was reported as compatible with iOS 26. That was a snapshot of its software eligibility, not a promise that it will receive every future iOS release. Apple’s software-support decisions are separate from its hardware-service classifications.
Installed apps may continue working, but developers can eventually require newer iOS versions. Banking, authentication, workplace, health, and accessibility apps deserve particular attention before deciding to keep the phone long term.

Repairs and batteries
Apple or an authorized provider may still offer some iPhone repairs, but the answer can differ by country, component, and inventory. A display, battery, camera, or logic-board problem may not receive the same service outcome.

Before approving a repair, ask for a current quote and confirm that the required part is available. Compare that cost with a newer used or new phone rather than assuming repair will be cheaper.
Independent repair shops may offer alternatives, but check their parts quality, calibration capability, warranty terms, and any effect on water resistance. For an older iPhone, battery condition can matter more to everyday value than the vintage label itself.
What it means for Apple Watch Series 3 owners
Series 3 watches can still track activity and workouts, display notifications, show the time, and run compatible features if the battery and hardware remain healthy. A vintage designation does not stop an existing watch from functioning.

Apple Watch Series 3 was excluded from watchOS 9, released in 2022, and it should not be treated as a watch with access to current watchOS features. Pairing requirements can also change, so compatibility with every current iPhone is not guaranteed.

Apple Watch servicing is often dependent on Apple’s replacement-unit and parts process rather than a conventional component repair. Battery service, screen damage, and swollen-battery cases should be checked directly with Apple or an authorized provider before you assume service is available.
The Series 3 launched in September 2017 but remained available as Apple’s lower-cost watch until September 2022. Apple’s vintage calculation is based on when distribution ended, not simply on the original launch date, which helps explain the timing of its classification.
Should you keep, repair, sell, or replace?
| Situation | Most sensible option |
|---|---|
| The iPhone battery and performance meet your needs, and required apps still work. | Keep using it, while maintaining backups and installing every available update. |
| A repair is minor and a provider confirms parts availability. | Repair it if the quote is meaningfully below replacement cost. |
| A major repair approaches the price of a newer device. | Replace it rather than paying for uncertain late-life service. |
| The Series 3 is used mainly for timekeeping, notifications, and basic workouts. | Keep it if pairing and battery life remain acceptable. |
| The Series 3 cannot pair with your iPhone or lacks required health, safety, cellular, or accessibility features. | Replace it. |
| You are buying either device secondhand. | Pay only a price that reflects battery age, software limits, repair uncertainty, and return protection. |
Checks before buying one used
iPhone 11 Pro Max
- Confirm the exact model and storage capacity.
- Make sure Activation Lock is disabled.
- Check battery health and whether iOS identifies the battery as a genuine Apple part.
- Test Face ID, cameras, speakers, microphones, charging, cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
- Look for “Unknown Part” or repair-history warnings.
- Confirm carrier-unlocked status if you need to use a particular network.
- Complete erase, activation, and return testing within the seller’s stated return period.
Apple Watch Series 3
- Confirm whether it is GPS or cellular.
- Verify that Activation Lock is removed.
- Confirm that it pairs with your iPhone and installed software before finalizing the purchase.
- Test charging, battery endurance, touchscreen, Digital Crown, side button, speaker, microphone, and heart-rate sensor.
- Do not assume a cellular model will work with your carrier.
- Be cautious of unusually cheap listings where battery service or pairing support is uncertain.
What happens when they become obsolete?
Once a product reaches Apple’s obsolete category, official hardware service and parts ordering generally stop. That does not necessarily make the device instantly unusable: software may continue functioning for a time, and independent repair is legally and operationally separate from Apple’s service network.
For that reason, owners should keep current backups, use a passcode and account protections, install every offered update, and check whether essential apps still support the device’s software.

Bottom line for owners
The iPhone 11 Pro Max is still a viable phone for many owners, but it has entered the late-support phase. Keep it if its battery, performance, apps, and security options remain adequate; confirm parts and pricing before repairing it.
The Apple Watch Series 3 is still functional but much harder to recommend as a new secondhand purchase. Its watchOS ceiling, changing pairing requirements, aging battery, and uncertain service availability make compatibility and condition more important than the vintage label.
If you only need a replacement charger, Apple’s 20W USB-C Power Adapter can power an iPhone 11 Pro Max and, with its compatible magnetic charging cable or puck, an Apple Watch. The adapter is sold separately from those cables.
