What is the $80,000 G-SHOCK?
The watch is the Blue Rose Project MRG-D5000, a limited-edition model in Casio’s high-end MR-G line. Hodinkee reported a launch price of $80,000, or JPY 11 million, on September 30, 2026. That is launch reporting in a U.S.-price context, not a universal price for every market. Hodinkee’s launch report describes its background and release.

Casio calls it the first MR-G timepiece crafted directly in sapphire crystal. The watch combines a sapphire bezel and case made from multiple parts, a titanium caseback with a sapphire insert, a Dura Soft rubber strap, and 24k gold lettering. Its vivid blue finish gives the Blue Rose name a visual basis, but the stronger distinction is structural: the sapphire case is assembled rather than cut as a conventional single piece.
Why is it collectible?
A very small announced edition
Casio says only 20 MRG-D5000 watches are available worldwide, with each caseback numbered from 1/20 through 20/20. A run that small gives the release an obvious collector profile. It does not tell us how many buyers want one, how quickly a watch could be resold, or what a future buyer would pay.

Unusual sapphire construction
Sapphire is hard and scratch-resistant, but it can crack under stress. Casio says the MRG-D5000 uses a Multi-Guard Structure: multiple interlocking components inspired by Japanese kigumi joinery, designed to bring MR-G shock resistance to a sapphire case. Casio says screw holes and other details that could create stress points were eliminated. The design is an engineering distinction, not evidence of future market demand.

Does the $400,050 G-SHOCK auction prove this one is an investment?
No. The $400,050 result was for a different watch: the one-of-one 18K yellow-gold G-SHOCK G-D001, sold at Phillips in 2023 in a charity auction. Casio says proceeds benefited The Nature Conservancy. The completed sale is documented in the Phillips lot record, and Casio’s 2024 results briefing confirms the charity-auction context.

How does it compare with earlier special G-SHOCKs?

The earlier gold releases show that Casio has made scarce, high-priced G-SHOCKs before. They do not create a consistent investment record: the examples differ in material, quantity, and sale channel, and the G-D001 figure is an auction result rather than an ordinary retail or resale price.

To assess investment performance, a buyer would need evidence such as completed sales of the same model, transaction prices over time, and enough transactions to judge liquidity. The available sources establish the MRG-D5000’s launch price and announced edition size, but not those resale facts. As a result, its future value, ability to sell quickly, and potential return are unknown—not demonstrated to be positive or negative.

That distinction matters at an $80,000 entry price. A limited run can constrain supply, but it cannot guarantee a buyer at any particular price. Likewise, sapphire construction may attract collectors who value the engineering, but that preference does not establish a resale premium. Anyone considering the watch should treat a purchase as a high-cost collecting decision, not a forecastable investment based on the gold-watch auction.

What should a prospective buyer verify?
- Confirm the actual price, availability, and purchase terms in the buyer’s market; the $80,000 figure is launch reporting, not a universal regional quote.
- Ask for the specific numbered watch and confirm its condition, documentation, and included components.
- Distinguish asking prices from completed sales. An unsold listing does not establish market value.
- Consider how much time and expense a resale could involve; no model-specific liquidity evidence is established.
- Do not use the G-D001’s charity-auction result as a forecast for the MRG-D5000.
