The answer depends on the particular watches and on what you mean by finishing: movement decoration, polished edges, hidden surfaces, or the case and bracelet. The manufacturers describe different techniques and examples, but their own accounts do not provide an independent, like-for-like quality test.
What the three brands say they finish
| Brand and example | Movement decoration | Edge work and visible surfaces | Exterior finishing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blancpain, calibre 1315 | Blancpain says the calibre is conceived, developed, produced, finished, and assembled within the Maison. Its Fifty Fathoms craftsmanship page describes hand-applied perlage and snailing on bridges and components. Blancpain’s craftsmanship description is a specific example, not proof that all Blancpain movements receive identical treatment. | Blancpain’s separate editorial account discusses sharp interior angles as a detail knowledgeable observers may examine, and describes finishing on hidden surfaces. That is the manufacturer’s perspective, not a universal independent grading rule. Blancpain’s article on finishing. | Blancpain describes dedicated capabilities for external components, including cases, bracelets, clasps, and buckles, as well as polishing. Its Delémont finishing division was created in June 2022 through a merger with Simon et Membrez SA. Blancpain’s manufacture overview. |
| Audemars Piguet, as described on its finishing page | AP lists hand-applied Côtes de Genève, traits tirés, circular graining, snailing, and sunburst brushing. It says movement decoration amounts to at least 30% of a movement’s value; that is AP’s own statement, not an independently established figure or cross-brand comparison. AP’s decoration and finishing page. | The page describes hand decoration but does not establish a model-specific bevel or interior-angle comparison with calibre 1315 or a Patek Philippe calibre. | AP identifies alternating polished and satin-brushed case and bracelet surfaces as a signature of its exterior finishing. |
| Patek Philippe, as described on its hand-finishing page | Patek lists beveling, circular satin finishing, straight graining, circular graining, sinking holes, and polishing. It presents hand finishing as both aesthetic and functional, saying it can smooth burrs and edges and help protect components against oxidation. Patek Philippe’s hand-finishing description. | Patek explains that beveling creates a polished transition between surfaces and that specialists use hand tools and abrasives. Its page notes that some tiny surfaces require binocular microscopes; this is context on the scale of the work, not a consumer grading method. | The cited hand-finishing page focuses on movement work and does not establish a like-for-like case or bracelet comparison with Blancpain or AP. |
How to compare finishing on actual watches
Start with the movement and its decoration
Look at the specific calibre, not just the logo on the dial. Identify which surfaces carry decoration, what patterns are used, and whether the finish appears consistent across the visible components. Perlage, snailing, Côtes de Genève, and graining are different techniques; the presence of a named technique alone does not establish how carefully it was executed.

Inspect edges without assuming every angle is comparable
Beveling or chamfering creates a transition between surfaces, and the quality of that work can be judged by its consistency and polish. Blancpain’s article emphasizes sharp interior angles as a detail to examine, but its guidance is brand-published and should not be treated as a universal scorecard. The available descriptions do not give a shared, model-specific edge-work test across the three brands.
Separate what a display back reveals from what it hides
A display back lets you inspect only the surfaces visible from that angle. Some finishing may be on hidden surfaces, as Blancpain’s own account notes. A more decorated view through a caseback is not necessarily proof that every component is more thoroughly finished, and the available brand descriptions do not provide a common inspection of concealed surfaces.

Judge the case and bracelet separately
Movement finishing is only one part of a watch’s finish. AP explicitly calls out the contrast between polished and satin-brushed exterior surfaces. Blancpain describes its capacity for cases, bracelets, clasps, and buckles. Compare the actual case and bracelet on the models you are considering rather than using movement decoration as a proxy for exterior work.
Why a single brand ranking does not hold up
The brands’ descriptions establish that each uses hand-finishing techniques; they do not establish that one brand is better overall. The examples are not a controlled comparison of equivalent watches, calibres, complexity, or price tiers, and no independent common score is provided. A useful judgment therefore has to be narrower: which particular watch has the execution and style of finishing you value?

Complexity and design also affect what can be compared. A more complicated or more visibly decorated movement is not automatically better finished. When evaluating a pair of watches, compare the same kinds of details—movement surfaces against movement surfaces, edges against edges, and exterior work against exterior work.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
Blancpain’s calibre 1315 page also states a five-day power reserve and a silicon balance spring. Those are movement specifications, not measures of finishing quality. Likewise, AP’s statement that decoration accounts for at least 30% of movement value is a manufacturer claim, not a cross-brand quality metric.

Craftsmanship need not mean every operation happens under one roof. AP’s account of the historical établissage network describes specialist workshops performing adjustment, setting, finishing, assembly, and final testing. That history cautions against treating a single manufacturing model as the only measure of craft. AP’s history of its savoir-faire.
