No: the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Ref. 3706 is discontinued, so buyers should look for pre-owned examples. IWC dates its introduction to 1994, but its official material does not establish the model’s exact final production year. The 3706 is best understood through its instrument-inspired design and its influence on a later IWC chronograph—not through unverified claims about every variant’s specifications.
When did IWC introduce the Ref. 3706?
IWC says it presented the first mechanical Pilot’s Chronograph, reference 3706, in 1994. The brand described its instrument-inspired dial as a design that quickly gained a global following and contributed to the success of the Pilot’s Watches. This is the clearest official date for the model’s beginning; IWC’s published account does not give a definitive final production year for the steel 3706. IWC’s 2018 account of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph is the source for both points.
What defines the 3706’s design?
The 3706 belongs to IWC’s instrument-inspired pilot-watch tradition. In its 2018 account of the later IW377724, which it described as based on the historic 1994 design, IWC highlighted the quarter-seconds scale and rectangular luminous hands as details carried over from the original’s design language. The IW377724 is a later design revival, not the original 3706.
IWC’s revival release also describes a day-and-date display, a soft-iron inner cage for magnetic protection, and a crystal specially secured against displacement from sudden drops in cockpit air pressure. Those details are documented in the release about the IW377724; they should not be treated as a complete specification sheet for every 3706 variant. The release’s statement that the later chronograph can time up to 12 hours in aggregate likewise applies to the IW377724, not automatically to every original 3706. IWC’s 2018 release.

How does the 3706 differ from the Ref. 3705?
The references are related, but they are not interchangeable. IWC identifies the 3705 as a ceramic-case Pilot’s Watch Chronograph and the 3706 as the mechanical Pilot’s Chronograph it presented in 1994. The 3705’s case material and model details should not be attributed to the 3706. IWC’s historical references and Pilot’s Watch history provide context for the separate models.
What is not established about every 3706?
IWC’s cited public material establishes the introduction date and design lineage, but not a complete variant-by-variant history for the steel Ref. 3706. It does not establish a universal case size, water-resistance rating, movement or caliber chronology, or dial-material timeline for every example. If a seller or listing gives exact specifications, check that they apply to the specific reference and configuration being offered rather than assuming they describe all 3706 watches.

What should you check when buying a pre-owned 3706?
Since the reference is no longer made, a current purchase is a pre-owned-watch decision. Evaluate the individual watch and its evidence rather than relying on an assumed “best” variant:
- Reference and configuration: confirm the exact reference and compare the watch with documentation or reliable reference-specific information.
- Condition and service: ask for service records and a recent water-resistance test. A historic rating does not establish the condition of an older watch today.
- Originality: inspect the dial, hands, bracelet and other components, and ask the seller to identify any replacements or changes.
- Documentation and seller evidence: consider what records accompany the watch and whether the seller can substantiate its history and stated configuration.
What do magnetic protection and water resistance mean in practice?
Magnetic protection
IWC describes soft-iron inner cases as protection against magnetic fields and says this construction exceeds DIN 8309 requirements. It is protective, not magnet-proof: IWC cautions that very strong magnets can still affect a mechanical watch. The guidance is general to IWC watches with soft-iron inner cases; it is not an independent performance test of an individual 3706. IWC’s technical guidance.

Water resistance
IWC states that water resistance is expressed in bar, not metres, and advises regular testing. Its instruction material says water resistance should be tested by an authorized IWC agent whenever a watch is opened and serviced. For a decades-old example, request a recent test instead of relying on a rating from when the watch was new. These are IWC’s general care recommendations, not a statement about the present condition or rating of every 3706. See IWC’s technical details and its instruction document.

A collector-forum discussion mentions a 20 mm bracelet version, which may help narrow a strap search, but it does not guarantee fit on every individual watch or establish that an aftermarket strap is an IWC original. Measure the watch’s lug width and confirm the attachment and end fit before ordering. The forum discussion is community information, not a universal compatibility specification.
