What the medium Santos offers
Cartier’s cited medium specification pairs a 35.1 mm-wide, 8.83 mm-thick case with an automatic 1847 MC movement and a 40-hour power reserve. The steel WSSA0010 measures about 41.9 mm from end to end in WatchSize’s fit guide. Cartier also lists sapphire crystal, 10-bar water resistance (approximately 100 metres), SmartLink bracelet adjustment and QuickSwitch interchangeability. The medium retains the design cues that make a Santos recognizable: a square bezel with exposed screws, a Roman-numeral dial, and a blue cabochon-style crown. Its movement and essential functions are not a budget substitute for the large model’s. The difference most buyers will notice is the scale on the wrist.

Why the medium can be the better choice
It wears with more restraint
The 35.1 mm width and roughly 41.9 mm length create a more contained footprint than the large. Hodinkee’s review says the Santos proportions work better in a smaller size, while WatchSize identifies the medium as a more wrist-friendly option for smaller wrists. That makes it a sensible starting point if you prefer a watch that sits neatly beneath a cuff or does not dominate your outfit.

There is no single wrist-circumference cutoff that guarantees a good fit. Case length, wrist shape, bracelet articulation and personal preference all matter. If possible, try the medium on in person and check whether the case ends sit comfortably on your wrist and whether the integrated-bracelet look feels right to you.
It works across everyday settings
The medium’s dressier, quieter presence suits office wear, casual outfits and travel. Cartier’s 10-bar rating and interchangeable strap system add practical flexibility, though water resistance is not a reason to neglect routine care: follow Cartier’s guidance for the particular watch and have seals checked as appropriate, especially after service or impact.

It is not a “poor man’s” Santos
Calling the medium a poor man’s choice mistakes smaller proportions for inferior substance. It keeps the defining Santos design and the automatic 1847 MC platform listed for the medium. Its case size is a preference, not evidence of a stripped-down watch. The “poor man’s Rolex” label is similarly unhelpful: this is a Cartier design with its own history and visual identity, not a stand-in for another brand.

The table’s case-width figures are not the whole fit story: lug-to-lug length, wrist shape and bracelet fit also affect how either size wears. If you are deciding between them, try both on with the bracelet sized correctly rather than relying on diameter alone.

When the medium feels like a compromise
- You want maximum presence. The large’s wider case and dial are more conspicuous; the medium may look too restrained if that is the point of buying a Santos for you.
- You prefer a more overtly sporty look. The medium is the quieter choice, while the large better suits a buyer prioritizing scale and visual impact.
- You assess value mainly by technical specifications. The available specifications establish the 1847 MC movement and its stated reserve, but do not establish chronometer certification or a superior accuracy claim. If certification, complications or lowest cost per specification are your priorities, the Santos may not be the strongest match.
Is the medium Santos worth the money?
That depends on what you value. The case for the medium is Cartier’s design, finishing, recognizable Santos details and a size that many buyers will find easier to wear across settings. It is not a compelling purchase solely because of movement credentials: the cited material does not establish chronometer certification or a special accuracy advantage.
Prices also depend on the exact reference, market and date. WatchCompared lists a $7,750 MSRP for steel reference WSSA0029, while WatchSize lists $7,250 for steel reference WSSA0010. Chrono24 has reported roughly 5% appreciation in 2024 and about 33% since 2020 for the Santos model family. Those are retrospective market observations, not a forecast or a return a buyer can count on; actual prices vary with reference, condition, location and timing. Treat resale as uncertain rather than as the reason to buy.
Should you buy new or pre-owned?
Buy new if you want to purchase through Cartier or an authorized retailer and value a straightforward route to warranty and service support. Buy pre-owned if you are willing to evaluate an individual watch carefully and want to compare asking prices for the same reference. In either case, verify the reference, condition, included bracelet links and accessories, seller credentials, return terms and what warranty or service coverage actually applies. Do not assume two listings are comparable because both say “medium Santos.”

For a pre-owned purchase, use market listings as context, not proof of fair value. The model-family trend reported by Chrono24 does not guarantee the value of a particular watch. For an alternative strap, Cartier documents QuickSwitch interchangeability, but confirm the connector and compatibility with the exact Santos reference before ordering.
Verdict: the best-balanced Santos for many buyers
The medium is the stronger choice if you want the Santos design in a more restrained, versatile size; the large is the better choice if you want more dial and a bolder wrist presence. The medium is not a lesser or “poor man’s” version—it is a different proportion. Try both sizes if you can, then choose by how the watch looks and feels on your wrist.
