What Timex’s 50-meter rating means for a swim
A water-resistance number is not a promise that a watch can be taken to that depth during any activity. It is a rating used under specified conditions, while movement, impact, pressure changes and the condition of the case can affect real-world exposure. For the Marlin Jet Chronograph, the most useful interpretation is not the number alone but Timex’s activity wording on the product page: light swimming is permitted; snorkeling and poolside diving are not.
Timex’s own product-page scale labels the 50-meter category Short swims. On the same scale, the 100-meter category is labeled Swimming, snorkeling & surfing. That distinction is why the Marlin Jet should be treated as a watch for ordinary, low-intensity water exposure rather than as an all-purpose watersports watch.

Why the chronograph pushers change the practical answer
The Marlin Jet is a chronograph, so its case includes pushers for timing functions. Timex specifically warns: “To maintain water resistance, do not press any buttons while underwater.” The warning is easy to overlook because the watch may be rated for swimming, but the rating does not make underwater operation of the controls acceptable.
If you want to time a swim, the conservative approach is to configure the chronograph before entering the water and leave the pushers alone until the watch is out of the water. This is a practical consequence of Timex’s instruction, not a separate depth certification. Do not experiment by starting, stopping or resetting the chronograph during immersion.

The same caution applies even during a shallow swim. Water depth is not the only consideration: pressing a pusher changes how the seals are loaded while water is present around the case. Timex’s published rule is simple, so there is no need to interpret a particular depth as an exception.

Which Marlin Jet configuration does this advice cover?
The official Timex listing identified for this question is the Marlin Jet Chronograph 40 mm Fabric Strap Watch, TW2Y89900. That page gives the 50-meter rating and the light-swimming limitation. Timex also lists a 40 mm stainless-steel bracelet version, reference TW2Y89800, with the same stated water-resistance and activity guidance.
Product names can cover several strap or regional configurations. Before relying on the advice, read the reference engraved on the caseback or printed on your purchase documents. If the reference is not TW2Y89900 or TW2Y89800, locate the matching Timex listing or manual; a similar name does not establish identical seals, construction or permitted activities.
The strap material itself does not expand the watch’s water rating. A fabric strap may feel different when wet, but Timex’s stated limit concerns the watch’s water resistance and operating instructions. Do not treat a different strap, aftermarket bracelet or replacement component as evidence that the watch has a higher rating.
Conditions that can compromise water resistance
Timex’s general user guide explains that a watch is water-resistant only while the lens, push buttons and case remain intact. The guide is general Timex advice, and its applicability as the exact manual for the Marlin Jet has not been established, but the warning is directly relevant to deciding whether to swim with any water-resistant chronograph.

- Inspect the lens: Cracks, chips or a visibly loose crystal are inconsistent with the guide’s requirement that the lens remain intact.
- Check the pushers: A damaged, loose or missing chronograph button is a reason not to expose the watch to water.
- Check the case: Dents, gaps or other damage can affect the integrity on which the rating depends.

Poolside diving is explicitly excluded, so entering the water feet-first does not make a diving-oriented use acceptable if the activity involves jumping or diving from the edge.
Leave every chronograph button untouched while the watch is wet or submerged. If you need to change the timing function, exit the water first and handle the watch only after it is no longer immersed. This avoids turning a permitted swim into the specific operating condition Timex warns against.

Timex does not publish a separate chlorine limit in the cited product guidance. Therefore, do not convert the 50-meter rating into a promise about every pool chemical, temperature or cleaning regime. The safe claim supported by the listing is limited to light swimming under the stated operating restriction.

Salt water and rinsing after exposure
Timex’s general user guide advises: “Rinse watch with fresh water after exposure to salt water.” Because the surfaced document is a general guide rather than a verified Marlin Jet-specific manual, treat this as general Timex maintenance advice, not as a model-specific testing result.
If the watch has been in the sea during an activity that otherwise fits the light-swimming guidance, rinse it with fresh water afterward as Timex recommends. Rinsing removes salt residue from the exterior. It does not make snorkeling, diving or underwater pusher operation acceptable, and it does not repair damage to the lens, buttons or case.
After rinsing, handle the chronograph only when the watch is out of the water. If you notice a cracked lens, loose pusher or damaged case after a swim, stop exposing it to water and arrange an inspection rather than relying on the original 50-meter specification.

The comparison shows why choosing by activity is more reliable than choosing by a number alone. Someone who only takes occasional short swims may find the Marlin Jet’s specification aligned with that use. Someone who snorkels, surfs or dives should select a watch whose manufacturer explicitly lists that activity and follow its operating restrictions.

- Confirm the reference. Check the caseback or paperwork and make sure the watch matches the Marlin Jet configuration for which the 50-meter guidance is published.
- Read the activity limit. Treat the watch as suitable for light swimming only; exclude snorkeling and poolside diving.
