The green Stella watches documented by Christie’s and Sotheby’s are vintage Rolex Day-Dates, not Daytona chronographs. That distinction matters if you are trying to identify or value a watch described as a “green Stella Daytona.”
Why the name is confusing
The title combines two different Rolex watch identities. Rolex says the Cosmograph Daytona launched in 1963 and describes it as a chronograph. Its current Cosmograph Daytona page shows contemporary Daytona models, but does not identify a green Stella dial.

The green Stella examples in the auction catalogues are Day-Date watches. The Day-Date is a separate Rolex model line, and the cited examples have references 1803 and 18238. A dial color or collector nickname does not turn a Day-Date into a Daytona.
What “Stella” means in these catalogues
In the auction-house usage here, “Stella” is collector terminology for vivid lacquered dials, not a technical definition established by Rolex. Christie’s describes the green lacquer finish and says its colors were applied in layers. Its catalogue essay explains: “Lacquered dials of vibrant colors, such as this one, are known among collectors as ‘Stella’ dials from the Italian word for star.” That wording is Christie’s description, not an official Rolex definition.

Sotheby’s also uses Stella for colorful 1970s Day-Date dials. These descriptions support the term’s use for the documented Day-Date examples, but do not establish a green Stella Daytona configuration.

These are specific catalogue records, not a complete inventory of every Rolex watch or a guarantee that any individual watch is original. They do, however, show why a green Stella description alone is insufficient to identify a Daytona.

Does “Stella Daytona” ever appear?
There is adjacent use of Stella-related language for a Daytona, but it does not support the green configuration in the title. A 2025 SJX Watches account describes the yellow-gold Daytona reference 126518LN with a turquoise lacquer dial as a Stella-related return. That is secondary specialist coverage of a turquoise dial, not evidence of a green Stella Daytona.

How to assess a watch advertised as a green Stella Daytona
Start with the watch’s reference and model identity rather than the seller’s headline. A Daytona is a chronograph; the green Stella examples catalogued above are Day-Dates. For a watch claimed to be an unusual Daytona, ask a knowledgeable watch specialist to assess the specific evidence instead of relying on the color name.
- Check the reference and whether the watch is actually a Daytona chronograph or a Day-Date.
- Request clear documentation of the dial, its originality, and the watch’s reference and serial details.
- Compare the movement and case details with the claimed reference, and have a specialist evaluate the watch in person.
- Separate documented facts from seller descriptions: a “Stella” label or a green dial alone does not establish factory configuration.
- Judge any asking price against comparable watches with the same reference, condition, accessories, and sale date—not against a different Rolex model.
What the auction price does—and does not—tell you
Christie’s reported that one circa-1968 green enamel Stella-dial Day-Date reference 1803 sold for USD 40,000 on 10 March 2020, against an estimate of USD 15,000–30,000. This is a historical result for that single lot, not a current valuation, a market average, or a Daytona price comparison. It cannot establish the value of a watch advertised as a green Stella Daytona.
