A watch can be exactly right in every way except how it wears. In his September 25, 2023 Time+Tide article, D.C. Hannay describes admiring several watches that felt too large on his 6 7/8-inch wrist. His experience points to a better question than “What case diameter should I wear?”: how do the watch’s full dimensions and appearance work for your wrist and your taste?
Why a watch can feel too large even when you love it
Hannay’s examples show the tension between admiration and wearability. He likes the look or idea of several watches, yet their scale does not suit him. That is a personal judgment, not evidence that the watches are objectively too large or that another wrist would wear them the same way.
Case diameter is only one part of the picture. Lug-to-lug length describes how far the watch reaches across the wrist; thickness affects how much it rises above the wrist; and the overall design contributes to its visual presence. The wearer’s aesthetic preference matters too. A watch may fit physically and still feel oversized to someone who prefers a more compact look.
What Hannay’s examples reveal about watch dimensions
The measurements below are those reported in Hannay’s article. They illustrate the different dimensions worth considering, not a universal fit test or a guarantee of current specifications or availability.

How to decide whether a watch is too big for you
- Check the full dimensions. Look beyond diameter to lug-to-lug length and thickness. The examples above show why a single number cannot describe the watch’s whole presence.
- Try it on if you can. Notice how it sits on your wrist and whether its proportions feel comfortable to you. A measurement alone cannot establish how a particular watch will look or feel on an individual.
- Compare with a smaller-case alternative. If a watch you love feels oversized, try a smaller version or another model, then compare its full dimensions rather than assuming that a smaller diameter guarantees a better fit.
- Separate fit from preference. Decide whether the concern is how the watch sits on your wrist, its visual scale, or both. You do not need a universal sizing rule to conclude that a watch is not the one you want to wear.
There is no universal cutoff
Hannay’s 6 7/8-inch wrist is a useful detail about his perspective, not a formula that can predict fit for someone else. His examples do not establish a maximum case diameter, a population-wide wrist-size standard, or a definitive fit rule. They make a narrower point: a watch that seems perfect on paper can still feel too large to its prospective owner.
In the article, Hannay sums up that mismatch as finding “a watch that’s absolutely killer, but hopelessly super-sized for your decidedly average wrist.” That is his personal account—not a measurement standard or a claim that the watches are unsuitable for everyone.

Check current specifications before buying
The dimensions and product options here reflect what Hannay reported in September 2023. They were not independently checked for this article, so confirm current measurements and availability with the brand or seller before making a purchase. Treat a 38 mm alternative as a reason to investigate, not as a promise that it will suit your wrist.
