How strong was Swatch Group’s growth in 2021?
The reported increase was substantial: net sales reached CHF 7,313 million, representing growth of 30.7% at current exchange rates and 29.6% at constant exchange rates year over year. The two rates describe the same sales comparison using different exchange-rate bases, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. The results announcement does not establish a complete explanation for the rebound or attribute it to particular products, markets, or reopening effects. Did the sales rebound translate into profit?
Yes. Operating profit climbed to CHF 1,021 million in 2021, compared with CHF 52 million in 2020. The operating margin—the share of sales remaining as operating profit—was 14.0%, up from 0.9%.
Net income was CHF 774 million, versus a net loss of CHF 53 million in 2020. The group reported a net margin of 10.6%. Together, the operating and net results show that the year’s sales recovery coincided with a major improvement in reported profitability.

How profitable was Watches & Jewelry?
For the Watches & Jewelry segment excluding Production, Swatch Group reported a 17.7% operating margin for the full year. The second-half margin was 18.4%. This segment measure excludes Production and should not be confused with the group-wide 14.0% operating margin.
What do the cash-flow and liquidity figures show?
- Operating cash flow: CHF 1,298 million.
- Free cash flow: CHF 1,033 million. The company defines this as operating cash flow less investing cash flow, excluding financial assets and securities.
- Net liquidity: CHF 2,558 million. Swatch Group’s definition includes specified cash, financial assets, debt, and derivative items.
These are company-defined financial measures. In particular, free cash flow and net liquidity depend on the definitions in Swatch Group’s announcement, rather than being universal measures with identical calculations across companies. What did Swatch Group expect for 2022?
In January 2022, Group Management said it anticipated double-digit sales growth in local currencies in 2022. That was a forecast made at the time, not a statement of the eventual 2022 result or a current outlook. The announcement also referred to the Electronic Systems order book in its contemporaneous outlook context; it should be read as information available then, not as a present-day indicator.
