Robert-Jan Broer’s “Ingenieur 3227: the score” is a short, first-person review written after three months with the watch—not a numerical rating or a lab test. Its most useful takeaway is about wear: Broer found the substantial watch comfortable on his relatively flat wrist, while stressing that fit depends on the wearer. Why the 3227 matters in the Ingenieur line
IWC places the reference 3227’s return of the Ingenieur in 2005, fifty years after the original Ingenieur. The brand linked the special 2005 models to its Mercedes-AMG partnership. Its historical publication describes the 80110 as a newly developed, IWC-manufactured calibre with Pellaton winding and an integrated shock-absorption system intended to help protect the movement from impacts and vibration. Confirm the reference and specifications against the specific watch’s original papers and other documentation. The catalogue’s weight figures make the material and strap configuration a notable distinction between the entries; they are not a guarantee of the weight of a particular watch as currently configured. The cited IWC collection page discusses the broader family and the earlier Ingenieur SL, but does not establish that the discontinued 3227 is currently on sale. IWC says 598 Ingenieur SL watches were produced and sold between 1976 and 1983; that figure concerns the SL, not the 3227. IWC’s current Ingenieur collection page provides that broader lineage context.
What Broer says about wearing the watch
Broer says the watch felt comfortable despite its weight on his relatively flat wrist. He also cautions that comfort varies with wrist shape, so his experience is a useful fit observation, not a promise that the 3227 will suit every wearer.

His bracelet-sizing account is similarly specific to his example: he says links could be added or removed with two supplied tools and a spring system on the back of each link. He warns that the satin finish can scratch. Those details describe what he encountered in 2008; they do not establish what tools, links, or condition a watch offered today will include.
At the time of writing, Broer says he was wearing his 3227 on an IWC soft strap, which he said also fit the regular Ingenieur. He also describes contacting a custom strap maker. These are historical personal observations, not confirmation of present-day accessory supply or compatibility for every variant.

The 2008 owner review and reference catalogue do not establish current prices, live inventory, service condition, or seller claims. For an individual watch, treat its condition and documentation as matters to verify rather than infer from the reference’s history.
