The modern watch takes its design cues from Gérald Genta’s 1970s Ingenieur SL Reference 1832, while updating the case, bezel construction and movement. The launch range included three stainless-steel dial options and a grade 5 titanium model; IWC added a blue-dial steel version in 2024.
The 2023 debut and the Genta connection
IWC dates the Ingenieur to 1955. Gérald Genta redesigned it in the 1970s, and the Ingenieur SL Reference 1832 launched in 1976. The Automatic 40 is a modern interpretation of that SL, rather than a reissue of the original. IWC’s 27 March 2023 launch announcement describes the inspiration and the new model’s return to the brand’s integrated-bracelet sports-watch portfolio.
IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr said the company invested in “engineering a new automatic model with perfect case proportions and ergonomics, a high level of detail and finishing, and equipped with modern movement technology.” That is the brand’s design intent, not an independent assessment of fit or finishing.
Launch and later references
The original 2023 lineup paired three stainless-steel models with one grade 5 titanium version. IWC subsequently announced a blue-dial stainless-steel model, reference IW328907, on 2 December 2024.

What carries over—and what changed
Grid dial and integrated bracelet
The modern Ingenieur keeps two conspicuous elements associated by IWC with the Ingenieur SL: a patterned grid dial and an integrated H-link bracelet. IWC describes the bracelet as fitted with a butterfly folding clasp. The case, bezel and bracelet combine polished and satin surfaces, according to the manufacturer.

On blue reference IW328907, IWC says the grid is stamped into a soft-iron dial base before the dial receives a blue PVD coating. The hands and applied markers are luminescent. These details are specific to the blue model’s official product information.
Five functional bezel screws
The bezel is a notable construction change. On the modern watch, five polygonal screws are functional and placed consistently to secure the bezel to the case. IWC contrasts them with the five recesses on the original Ingenieur SL, whose positions could vary from watch to watch. The updated screws therefore do more than reproduce a visual motif: they are part of the modern bezel’s fastening system.

Dimensions and fit
IWC gives the launch design a 40 mm case diameter and a 45.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement. For blue reference IW328907, the official EU product page specifies a height of 10.7 mm. IWC says its reworked middle-link attachment is intended to improve fit, including on slender wrists; actual comfort depends on an individual wearer’s wrist and preferences.
