The 2025 IWC Ingenieur Automatic 42 in black ceramic (IW338903) and Ingenieur Automatic 40 in 18-carat 5N gold (IW328702) share the collection’s integrated-bracelet design and patterned Grid dial, but they make very different choices in size, material, movement and price. The ceramic model is larger and all black; the gold model is slimmer, has twice the stated power reserve and carries a much higher US displayed price.

How the cases and bracelets differ
IW338903: black zirconium oxide ceramic
IWC makes the ceramic model’s case ring, bezel, case-back ring, crown protection, crown and integrated bracelet from black zirconium oxide ceramic. Its multi-part construction uses an internal titanium ring to hold the movement and accommodate the functional screws. The case measures 42 mm across and 11.5 mm high.
IWC describes zirconium oxide ceramic as hard, scratch resistant, lighter than steel and unaffected by temperature changes. It also gives the material a hardness of about 1,300 Vickers. These are manufacturer statements, not results from an independent comparative test. The surfaces combine satin finishing, sandblasting and polishing. IWC’s 1 April 2025 launch release gives further construction details.

IW328702: 18-carat 5N gold
The 40 mm model uses 18-carat 5N gold for its case, case-back ring, bezel, crown protection, crown and bracelet links. It is 10.4 mm high, making it both narrower and thinner than the ceramic reference. IWC describes the finish as a mix of satin-finished and polished surfaces.
The gold watch pairs its case and integrated bracelet with a black Grid dial, solid-gold appliques and gold-plated hands. Its visible movement has circular Geneva stripes, blued screws and a gold-plated oscillating weight. Details appear in IWC’s 1 April 2025 launch release.

Movement and power reserve
The ceramic IW338903 uses IWC calibre 82110 with a stated 60-hour power reserve. The gold IW328702 uses calibre 32111 with a stated 120-hour reserve—twice as long. In practical terms, the gold model’s stated reserve allows more time off the wrist before the watch stops, assuming it was fully wound; actual running time depends on winding and use.
Both watches have a date display, central hacking seconds and sapphire crystals, according to their product pages. IWC describes the ceramic model’s 82110 as using a Pellaton winding system and says it is visible through tinted sapphire on the case back. The gold model’s 32111 is also visible through a sapphire case back.

Price and what the difference buys
On IWC’s US product pages accessed 7 October 2026, the ceramic reference is displayed at US$22,700 and the gold reference at US$60,600, both excluding VAT. The gold model is therefore US$37,900 higher on those pages. That difference accompanies a precious-metal case and bracelet, a smaller and thinner format, and a 120-hour rather than 60-hour stated reserve; it does not establish how either watch will perform on a particular wrist or what it will sell for through a local retailer.
These are geography-specific manufacturer display prices, not a worldwide price comparison. Check the relevant IWC page or an authorized local retailer for current regional pricing, taxes and availability.

Which Ingenieur makes more sense for you?
- Choose the ceramic IW338903 if you want the larger 42 mm size, an all-black look and ceramic construction, and prefer its lower official US displayed price.
- Choose the gold IW328702 if you want an 18-carat 5N gold case and bracelet, a slightly smaller and thinner watch, and the longer stated power reserve.
- Try both on if fit is decisive. Diameter and height are useful comparisons, but they do not establish comfort or fit on an individual wrist.
Shared design, different expression
Both references carry the Ingenieur’s Grid dial and integrated-bracelet silhouette. IWC connects the modern collection to the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, designed by Gérald Genta in the 1970s. The collection’s design lineage is shared; the choice here is between a larger black ceramic execution and a smaller precious-metal one. See IWC’s Ingenieur Automatic collection for the wider range.
