Its three dial windows show the month, date and day. It adjusts for months of different lengths, but not February’s changing length or leap years, so it needs a manual correction at the end of February each year.
What is the IWC Portugieser Annual Calendar?
IW503504 is the exact reference number for the configuration on IWC’s official product page, which classifies it as part of past collections. The page identifies a silver dial, 18 ct 5N gold case and black alligator-leather strap.
The annual calendar uses three separate windows to display month, date and day. IWC says the complication debuted in the Portugieser in 2015; that is the debut of the complication, not a production-date claim for every IW503504 configuration. IWC’s history of the annual calendar describes the three semicircular displays at 12 o’clock and the annual February correction.
How often does the calendar need to be adjusted?
Once a year, at the end of February. The mechanism handles the varying lengths of the other months, but it does not account for February’s variable length or leap years. Correct the calendar manually via the crown at February’s end, following the watch’s operating instructions.

Annual calendar versus perpetual calendar
An annual calendar and a perpetual calendar differ in what the mechanism accounts for. IW503504 requires a manual February correction each year. For comparison, IWC’s Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42, reference IW344202, lists displays for date, day, month, leap year and moon phase. Its listed case diameter is 42.4 mm, compared with 44.2 mm for IW503504.
| Consideration | Annual Calendar IW503504 | Perpetual Calendar 42 IW344202 |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar correction | Manual correction at the end of February each year | Different complication; consult the exact reference’s manual for operating details |
| Displayed information | Month, date and day | Date, day, month, leap year and moon phase |
| Listed case diameter | 44.2 mm | 42.4 mm |
Choose based on the calendar information and correction routine you want, as well as the particular reference’s dimensions. Diameter alone does not establish how a watch will fit; thickness, lug geometry and a try-on matter too.
