The IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 is the collection’s more compact automatic option, pairing a 40.4 mm case with IWC-manufactured Calibre 82200 and a 60-hour power reserve. The model family dates to 2020; the update announced on 9 April 2024 brought a re-engineered, slimmer-profile case, double box-glass sapphire crystals and new dial colors. The specifications below describe IWC’s listings, not an independent hands-on or wrist-fit test.
What the 2024 update changed
IWC announced the refreshed Portugieser Automatic 40 at Watches and Wonders Geneva on 9 April 2024. It was an update to a line introduced in 2020, not the debut of the family itself. IWC described the new case construction as re-engineered for a slimmer side profile and added double box-glass sapphire crystals.
The dial refresh involved color and surface treatments. IWC says the dials start as brass, receive either a sunburst or finely blasted finish before color is applied, then get 15 layers of transparent lacquer that are fine-ground and polished. The company also says applied markers are mounted by hand. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent verification of production or finishing.
The 2024 announcement named Horizon Blue and Obsidian variants in gold; across the refreshed 40/42 collection, it also introduced Dune and Silver Moon. Colors should be checked against the exact reference: the announcement does not establish that every color is available in every material.

Design: the Portugieser signature in a smaller format
The dial is deliberately open, with applied Arabic numerals, a railway-style minute track, feuille-type hands and small seconds at six. There is no date window. IWC traces this legible layout and small-seconds arrangement to the Reference 325 from 1939, while presenting the current design elements as part of the Portugieser identity.
“Compact” is relative to the broader Portugieser range. IWC calls the nominal size 40 millimetres, but its reference-specific US listings give a diameter of 40.4 mm. No lug-to-lug measurement or independent wear assessment is established here, so diameter alone cannot say how the watch will fit a particular wrist.

Calibre 82200: automatic winding and 60-hour reserve
The Automatic 40 uses Calibre 82200, an automatic movement manufactured by IWC. IWC says its Pellaton winding system uses ceramic components and provides a 60-hour power reserve. On the steel IW358304 listing, IWC additionally specifies a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), 192 components, 31 jewels, Côtes de Genève and perlage decoration, and small hacking seconds. Those additional details are specific to that listing; they should not automatically be assumed for every variant.

The choice shown by these listings is primarily material, dial, water-resistance rating and price: the steel IW358304 is the lower-priced option and has a silver-plated dial, while the gold IW358401 pairs 18 ct 5N gold with a black dial and carries the higher listing price. Both have the same listed 40.4 mm diameter, a 20 mm strap width and the same stated movement and reserve. Check the exact reference and current regional listing before purchase, because these specifications and prices are reference- and market-specific.
