The Timex Waterbury Ace Fly-Back Chronograph is the one watch in this roundup that can be identified confidently from the available reporting; the intended IWC and Citizen models behind the headline remain unconfirmed, so their stories cannot be compared responsibly.
What a flyback chronograph does
On a conventional chronograph, timing a new interval generally means stopping the chronograph, resetting it, and starting it again. A flyback combines the reset and restart into one action while the chronograph is running. That makes it useful for measuring successive intervals with less interruption. It is a function, not a guarantee of a particular movement design: watches can implement it with different movement architectures.
IWC’s chronograph explainer identifies watchmaker Sabrina Herzog as discussing basic, double, and flyback chronographs. The available page information supports the distinction between types, but not a direct quotation from Herzog.
The Timex Waterbury Ace Fly-Back Chronograph
June 2026 coverage identifies the Timex Waterbury Ace Fly-Back Chronograph as a flyback-equipped model in the Waterbury line. It’s About Time’s June 29 report gives the following specifications and launch details; these are reported product claims, not independent test results.

| Detail | Reported information |
|---|---|
| Case | 43 mm stainless steel, according to It’s About Time, June 29, 2026, and Le Nouveau Réveil, June 15, 2026. |
| Water resistance | 100 m, according to It’s About Time, June 29, 2026, and Le Nouveau Réveil, June 15, 2026. |
| Movement | Multi-motor Intelligent Quartz flyback movement, according to It’s About Time, June 29, 2026; Le Nouveau Réveil, June 15, 2026, also identifies an Intelligent Quartz flyback movement. |
| Display and motors | It’s About Time reports that the central handset and each retrograde subdial have their own motor, with retrograde hour and minute counters and a central chronograph-seconds hand. |
| Strap | Brown leather, according to It’s About Time, June 29, 2026; Le Nouveau Réveil, June 15, 2026, reports a leather strap. |
| Price and availability | $299 and available from Timex, not limited edition at the time of reporting, according to It’s About Time, June 29, 2026. This is a dated reported price and availability, not a confirmed current offer. |
The retrograde counters and separate motors are a notable part of the reported layout, but the description comes from coverage rather than an independently verified movement teardown. The two reports agree on the broad flyback, case, and water-resistance profile; buyers should check Timex’s current listing for present price, stock, and market availability.
What can—and cannot—be said about the IWC and Citizen headlines
The headline’s references to IWC “shocks” and Citizen “downsizes” do not identify specific models in the available reporting. Without those model names, release details, or verified specifications, it is not possible to establish what prompted either description or to compare either watch with the Timex.

IWC’s archive lists an April 14, 2026 announcement for the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive, described as engineered and certified for human spaceflight. The available evidence does not connect that announcement to the “IWC Shocks” phrase, so it should not be treated as the watch intended by the headline.
A Citizen search result concerns the Tsuno/Challenge Timer bullhead chronograph, including reference AN3660-81A. That coverage says the modern quartz version does not retain the original mechanical 8110’s flyback complication. It does not establish that this is the model behind “Citizen Downsized,” and its flyback history alone is not a basis for identifying it as the subject.

How to judge the three stories once the models are identified
A meaningful comparison would need to establish the exact IWC and Citizen references first. Then compare verified facts on the same terms:
- Size: case diameter and thickness, to show precisely what “downsizing” means rather than relying on a headline.
- Chronograph and movement: movement type and whether the watch actually has a flyback function.
- Use and construction: published water resistance and case materials.
- Release context: price, edition status, release timing, and availability, each tied to the relevant market and reporting date.
At present, the only detailed product profile supported here is the Timex’s reported 43 mm case and 100 m water resistance. No comparable IWC or Citizen values are established by the cited coverage.
