Why Seiko became an important watchmaker

Another defining milestone came on December 25, 1969. Seiko says it marketed the Quartz Astron on that date as the world’s first quartz watch, and subsequently opened the patents to the world. How the Seiko 5 Sports collection changed
On August 7, 2019, Seiko announced a redesigned Seiko 5 Sports collection, with availability beginning in September. What the 2019 launch specified
- Movement: Caliber 4R36, with manual winding and hacking seconds.
- Power reserve: 41 hours, as stated in the launch announcement.
- Range: 27 executions in five styles in that release.
These details should not be generalized to every Seiko 5 Sports watch now on sale. The announcement is useful as a dated snapshot of how Seiko positioned the relaunch, not as a specification sheet for the entire current family.
How today’s SKX relates to the older SKX007

For a buyer or collector, the practical comparison is between particular watches, not a simple “old versus new” verdict:
- Identity and design: the current SKX series draws on the archived SKX007 while presenting an updated expression.
- Specifications: the 2019 4R36 and 41-hour reserve figures apply to the release described then; confirm the movement and specifications of the exact model being considered.
- Lineup and price: check the current collection and local listings. A 2019 count cannot be compared fairly with a current selection without matching market and date, and the available information does not establish a like-for-like historical price comparison.
Has Seiko lost popularity or value?
That is not established by the evidence available here. There are no comparable, dated sales figures, market-share measurements or consumer surveys to demonstrate a popularity decline or explain one.
