The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Geographic is a mechanical dual-time watch with a city selector, not a world timer that displays every time zone at once. The current Master Control Geographic Q4128421 is a 40 mm steel model with Calibre 939 and a 70-hour power reserve. Older Master Geographic editions differ in dimensions, movements and dial features, so those specifications should be tied to their exact references.
Which Master Geographic is this review about?
“Master Geographic” describes a family of watches, not one fixed specification. The current manufacturer listing is for the Master Control Geographic Q4128421. The older examples below come from reviews of different editions and should not be treated as specifications for that current reference.
| Edition covered | Case and movement | Notable display or review detail |
|---|---|---|
| Master Control Geographic Q4128421, current official listing | 40 mm stainless steel; 10.96 mm thick; Calibre 939; 70-hour power reserve | Power-reserve indicator and second time zone selected by a 24-city disc |
| Master Geographic 1428530, as reviewed by Fratello | 39 mm steel; 11.77 mm thick; Calibre 939B/1; 43-hour power reserve | Sector dial; reviewer describes a separate day/night indicator for the second zone |
| Anniversary edition, as reviewed by Time+Tide | 40 mm steel; movement and reserve not stated in that review | City wheel and small 24-hour indicator; the review says this edition omitted the power-reserve display found on the regular version it discussed |
How does the Master Geographic work?
It shows local time with central hour, minute and seconds hands. A second display indicates the time in one city selected from a city disc; on the Calibre 939AA covered by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s user manual, a small interior dial shows the selected city’s time and a day/night indication. The manual also describes a separate power-reserve display. The exact arrangement of indicators varies by edition.
The city disc is a practical way to identify the second zone, but it does not cover every modern civil-time offset. The 939AA manual describes 24 standard time zones and excludes fractional-hour offsets, naming India, Iran and Nepal. It also notes that seasonal time changes require adjustment. Both time-zone minute hands advance together, so this is best understood as a dual-time watch with a city display—not a full world timer showing many cities’ times simultaneously.

How do you set the second time zone?
The following controls are described for the Calibre 939AA in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s manual. Check the instructions for the exact reference before applying them to another generation.
- Set local time: use the crown at 3 o’clock to set the local reference time; the manual says this synchronizes the second-zone time as well.
- Select the second zone: use the crown at 10 o’clock to choose a city. The second-zone indication changes to the selected city.
- Adjust the date if needed: use the corrector at 2 o’clock to set the date, including adjustment for shorter months.
What do hands-on reviews say about wearing and reading it?
Impressions depend on the particular edition and reviewer. In Fratello’s review of the 1428530, Jorg Weppelink reports comfortable proportions and praises the dial and movement. His article identifies that reference as 39 mm wide and 11.77 mm thick, with Calibre 939B/1, 282 components, 34 jewels and a 43-hour reserve. He describes selecting a city with the 10 o’clock crown. Those are observations and specifications for the reviewed watch, not a universal fit verdict for every Master Geographic.

Felix Scholz’s Time+Tide review of an anniversary edition praises its restrained dial layout despite the added indications, while noting that the small 24-hour indicator takes some getting used to. That edition, as discussed in the article, lacked the power-reserve indicator found on the regular version being compared. These reviews offer useful perspectives on balance and legibility, but they do not establish how every wrist—or every reference—will experience the watch.

Jaeger-LeCoultre describes testing for up to six weeks, including positions, power reserve, temperature, movement and water resistance. This is the maker’s testing program, not an independent certification or evidence about the present condition of an individual used watch.

The Q4128421 is listed at 5 bar water resistance. Fratello reports the same nominal rating for the 1428530 and advises against taking that reviewed watch into water. A rating alone is not an assurance of suitability for swimming, especially for a pre-owned watch: condition, seals, service history and strap material matter, and the cited reviews do not document a water test.

Before choosing a Master Geographic, compare the exact reference’s case size and thickness, movement and reserve, dial indications, setting procedure, offset coverage, water-resistance rating, strap fit, condition and current asking price. Do not assume one generation’s specification applies to another.
