Introduced in 1931, it made that useful mechanism part of a lasting Art Deco design—and later became a platform for different movements, complications and two-sided displays.
What was the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso made for?
Jaeger-LeCoultre traces the idea to a polo field in India in 1930, where players needed a way to protect a watch’s glass and dial during play. The solution was not a removable cover but a case that could slide and rotate within its support, turning the dial away from exposure. The maker recounts the origin in its Reverso history and account of the watch’s genesis.

The reversible case addressed a specific use, but its rectangular proportions, parallel gadroons and streamlined geometry also gave the watch a distinctive Art Deco identity. That combination is central to the Reverso’s longevity: the mechanism is functional, while the case remains recognizable even as dials, materials and complications change.
When was the Reverso first made?
According to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s historical account, René-Alfred Chauvot filed patent N°712.868 on March 4, 1931 for a watch that could slide in its support and turn over. César de Trey and LeCoultre later acquired the design rights, and the Reverso name was registered in November 1931. The first deliveries followed in winter 1931. The brand’s history is the source for these dates; they are presented as its account of the watch’s origins.

How does the Reverso case flip?
The watch case sits in a supporting cradle. To reverse it, the wearer slides the case out of its normal position and rotates it, then slides it back with the dial facing inward. On a Monoface, this presents the reverse of the case rather than a second time display. The design was intended to turn the dial away from potential damage during polo; it should not be treated as a guarantee against impact, nor does the mechanism make the watch waterproof.
How did the Reverso develop its own movements?
Early Reverso watches used movements made by Tavannes while Jaeger-LeCoultre developed a movement shaped for the rectangular case. The brand identifies Calibre 410, introduced in 1933, as its first in-house movement developed specifically for the Reverso. This transition linked the watch’s unusual case form to its mechanics rather than relying only on a conventional round movement.
The collection later moved beyond simple time displays. Jaeger-LeCoultre says the Reverso has housed more than 50 different calibres; this is the manufacturer’s count of its own collection history. Its Collectibles material also records small-seconds examples and a 1938 central-seconds model later nicknamed the Doctor’s Reverso, whose five-second markings were intended to help read a pulse rate.

- Monoface: One dial is intended for ordinary timekeeping. When the case is turned, the reverse side is generally a blank metal surface, which can provide a different look and, on some versions, a surface for personalization.
- Duoface: A second dial on the reverse can show another time-zone display or a different arrangement of indications. The two sides are not simply interchangeable faces of one identical dial; the displays and functions depend on the specific reference.
For example, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 2026 Reverso Tribute Duoface Small Seconds announcement specifies a 42.9 mm × 25.5 mm case, a blue-grey reverse dial for a second time zone and manually wound Calibre 854. The announcement also says the strap uses the brand’s interchangeability system. These are specifications for that announced model, not for every Duoface. See the brand’s Reverso novelties release for the stated details.

What should you compare when choosing a Reverso?
“Reverso” names a broad collection, not one fixed specification. Compare the exact reference, especially if case fit or the reverse display matters to you.
- Dimensions and wrist fit: Check the listed case measurements and try the watch on if possible. Rectangular dimensions do not translate directly to the feel of a round watch of the same width.
- Display arrangement: Confirm whether the watch is a Monoface or Duoface, and what the reverse side actually displays.
- Movement and winding: Movement type differs by model. The 2026 Tribute Duoface Small Seconds announcement, for instance, specifies a manually wound Calibre 854.
- Material and finishing: Case materials and dial treatments vary across the collection and affect both appearance and wear.
- Power reserve: The 2025/2026 novelties release gives a 50-hour reserve for specified updated Classic Small movements, up from 38 hours. That figure is model-specific, not a collection-wide specification.
- Strap or bracelet: Check the exact reference and its fit requirements. An interchangeability system described for one model does not establish compatibility for every Reverso.
- Water resistance: The same novelties release lists 3-bar resistance for several Classic Small versions. Do not apply that rating to other references without checking their own specifications.
Can the reverse side be personalized?
Some Monoface models have a blank metal back that can be personalized. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s release describes the Reverso Classic Monoface “Origin,” introduced in 2025 and inspired by the proportions and aesthetics of the first feminine Reverso, as a steel version with a blank back suitable for personalization. Confirm the options for the precise reference and market rather than assuming every Reverso can be engraved.

What does the Reverso’s collecting history add?
The Collectibles programme connects selected historic watches with archival context and restoration. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 2026 Collectibles VI description says the 1972 Reverso Corvo was produced in just 200 pieces; that is the brand’s stated historical production figure. The maker also presents The Collectibles book, provided with Collectibles watches and available through its website and boutiques, as a way to explore the programme’s watches and history.
