The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso and Cartier Tank share a rectangular profile, but their defining ideas are different: the Reverso has a case that swivels in its cradle, while Tank is a family of watches with distinct case variations. Neither is a universal winner. The useful comparison is between specific references, judged by design, fit, movement and practical specifications.
Two rectangular watches, two different design signatures
Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the Reverso to 1931 and says it was created for the rigours of polo. The case slides in its support and turns over, a mechanism that lets the wearer face the dial inward. Its Art Deco lines and reversible construction remain central to the collection. The metal reverse can also be personalized. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso history dates the patent application for the reversible design to 4 March 1931.
Cartier’s Tank was designed by Louis Cartier in 1917. Tank is not one fixed case or specification: the family includes versions such as the Cintrée, Chinoise, Américaine and Française. Cartier describes its design in terms of geometry and proportion. To compare a Tank fairly with a Reverso, identify the Tank variant and reference rather than relying on the family name alone. Cartier’s Tank collection presents these distinct interpretations.
What the reversible case adds
Reverso models come in Monoface, Duoface and Duetto configurations. A Monoface has one dial; on relevant Duoface and Duetto references, the reverse side can provide another time-zone display or a different aesthetic expression. These are model-specific features, not capabilities of every Reverso. The swivelling case also makes the plain reverse available as a surface for personalization.
#1 Best Overall
For someone drawn to a watch with a functional transformation built into its case, that is the Reverso’s clearest distinction. A Tank’s appeal instead depends on the proportions and character of the particular version chosen.
Compare exact references, not collection labels
The movement examples alone show why it is misleading to describe all Reversos or all Tanks as mechanical or quartz. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso Classic Monoface Origin, reference Q3878520, uses the quartz in-house Calibre 657. Cartier’s cited Tank Louis Cartier medium model has a manually wound Manufacture mechanical Calibre 1917 MC, while the cited large Tank Must uses a high-autonomy quartz movement. These are examples, not collection-wide rules.
| Specification | Reverso Classic Monoface Origin, Q3878520 | Tank Louis Cartier, medium | Tank Must, large |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement in the cited official listing | Quartz, in-house Calibre 657 (Jaeger-LeCoultre) | Manual mechanical, Manufacture Calibre 1917 MC (Cartier) | High-autonomy quartz (Cartier) |
| Dimensions stated on cited product page | Not stated in the captured product-page information | 33.7 × 25.5 mm; 6.6 mm thick (Cartier) | 33.7 × 25.5 mm; 6.6 mm thick (Cartier) |
| Water resistance stated on cited product page | Not stated in the captured product-page information | 3 bar (Cartier) | 3 bar (Cartier) |
The table reflects the cited official product pages, not universal specifications for either collection. Cartier’s cited 3-bar ratings apply to those two references; the reviewed Reverso page did not state a corresponding rating in the captured material. Check the current official listing for the exact reference you are considering, especially for water resistance and service guidance.

- Choose a Reverso if the swivelling case is central to what you want, or you value the possibility of a second display or a personalized reverse on a suitable reference.
- Choose a Tank if a particular Tank variant’s proportions and design appeal to you more than the Reverso’s reversible case. Compare the chosen variant and reference rather than treating all Tanks as identical.
- Compare movement preference reference by reference. The examples above include both quartz and mechanical movements across the two families, so the collection names alone do not determine winding type.
- Check fit in person where possible. Rectangular watches can sit and feel different from round watches with similar stated dimensions; dimensions do not replace a try-on.
- Verify practical details on the current regional product page. Materials, dimensions, movement, water resistance, price and availability depend on the reference and can vary or change.
Prices and availability are regional and change over time, and the cited information does not establish a reliable like-for-like price comparison. Compare current listings for the exact references rather than assuming one collection is consistently more expensive.
