In a 2015 interview, he said he had worn a Submariner daily for 30 years and described his newer wristwatch as a Rolex Deepsea with a blue-to-black dial—the Deepsea D-Blue. The much larger Deepsea Challenge was attached to the submersible, not worn as his personal watch.
What Rolex did James Cameron wear?
Cameron told Time+Tide Watches that his first personally significant watch was a Rolex Submariner. “I’ve always had a Submariner on my wrist. I’ve worn one every day for 30 years,” he said in the interview, published 1 January 2015.
He also described his newer wristwatch as a Rolex Deepsea with a blue-to-black gradient dial. The interview identifies it as the Deepsea D-Blue, distinguished by its gradient dial and green DEEPSEA lettering. The article said the watch was due for release in Australia on 21 August, in its 2015 context; that historical release note says nothing about present-day stock or pricing.
What was the Rolex Deepsea Challenge on the submersible?
The experimental Rolex Deepsea Challenge was a separate instrument fitted to Cameron’s Deepsea Challenger submersible for its descent. Cameron emphasized the difference in scale: “That one was much bigger. It was much chunkier. It was experiencing real pressure. And Rolex whipped that watch together in five weeks from scratch.” That five-week timeline is Cameron’s account in the interview, not an independently audited production record.

A 2014 historical account at RolexMagazine.com reports the experimental watch as 51.4 mm and reproduces Rolex wording describing it as designed for 12,000 meters. These are details reported by that secondary archive, not independently verified here against a current official Rolex product listing.

The interview does not establish consumer availability for the experimental Deepsea Challenge. It should not be confused with the retail wristwatch Cameron described wearing.

What Cameron said about exploration
The conversation also turned from watches to the outlook behind exploration. Asked whether the experience ever gets resolved, Cameron replied: “Oh no, it never gets resolved, it’s open-ended, it’s like science. For every question science asks that is answered, three more become known.” His point was not simply about achieving a depth or setting a record, but about continuing to ask questions.
He also said, “I don’t like living with superstitions, I like living with answers, with reality.” When discussing Rolex’s manufacturing operation, he praised its robotic parts-delivery system as “like being in a science-fiction movie.” Those are Cameron’s impressions from the interview, rather than independent assessments of Rolex’s production process.
