John Harwood helped bring the self-winding wristwatch into commercial production with a design developed in the early 1920s. Its limited-swing winding weight and crownless, rotating-bezel hand setting made it distinctive. The claim that it was the “world’s first” applies specifically to the automatic wristwatch—not to self-winding timepieces generally, which included earlier pocket watches.
Who invented the automatic wristwatch?
British watch repairer John Harwood developed an automatic wristwatch mechanism in the early 1920s. He did not invent automatic watches as a broad category: self-winding pocket-watch mechanisms existed centuries earlier. Harwood’s importance lies in adapting self-winding to a wristwatch and helping move that design into production.
The British Museum says Harwood began work on a Swiss-made wristwatch movement in 1922. Its account of his development captures the practical challenge of fitting a workable winding system into a normal-sized watch: “The first experimental model, I must say, was by no means efficient, and it was only after much research and patient endeavour that I was successful in working out the ratios of weight movements in relation to the winding train in the limited space available inside the case of a wrist-watch of normal size.” (British Museum)
When was Harwood’s watch patented and launched?
The invention, patent, and commercial appearance are separate milestones. The British Museum records British patent no. 218,487 as taken out on 7 July 1923. It dates a surviving Harwood watch in its collection to 1929. Fortis, whose institutional history describes the watch’s production, says the first Harwood automatic watches left its manufacture on 13 July 1926 and were presented at the Basel Trade Fair that year. The Science Museum Group catalogs another example as circa 1928. These dates describe development, patenting, production, and surviving watches—not competing claims for a single “invention year.” (British Museum; Fortis; Science Museum Group)

There is a discrepancy in the accounts of Swiss patent no. 106583: the British Museum associates it with 16 October 1923, while Fortis gives 1 September 1924. Without a verified patent record resolving the difference, neither date should be treated here as definitive.
How did Harwood’s automatic wristwatch work?
As the wearer moved their arm, an oscillating weight moved inside the watch and drove a winding train that transferred energy to the mainspring. Unlike a later full-rotor arrangement, Harwood’s weight had a limited arc of travel. Spring buffers at the ends of its swing stopped and cushioned its movement; this bumper-style action is why later examples are commonly described as “bumper” watches. The design turned ordinary wrist motion into winding rather than relying on the wearer to wind the watch by hand. (British Museum; Science Museum Group)

How did Harwood’s watch set the hands without a crown?
Harwood dispensed with the conventional winding stem and crown. To set the hands, the wearer rotated the bezel to engage the hand-setting mechanism. An indicator on the dial showed when hand setting was engaged. This unusual arrangement is one of the easiest ways to distinguish the Harwood system in descriptions of surviving examples: the bezel did more than frame the dial. (British Museum; Science Museum Group)
What do surviving Harwood watches look like?
The British Museum catalogs a silver-cased Swiss example from 1929, signed “Harwood Self Winding Watch Co Ltd,” with a 15-jewel movement. Its collection record describes the oscillating winding weight, spring-loaded buffers, knurled rotating bezel, and absence of a winding button. The Science Museum Group’s circa-1928 silver-cased example is also cataloged with a bumper-type winding weight and bezel hand setting. These records document historical objects and their construction; they do not establish whether an original is currently for sale, what one is worth, or whether a particular listing is authentic. How did Harwood’s design differ from later automatic watches?
Harwood’s contribution belongs to the early history of automatic wristwatches, but it should not be confused with the later full-rotor system. Seiko Museum describes Harwood’s mechanism as using a semi-rotational rotor and distinguishes it from the 360-degree rotor later developed by Rolex. The distinction is mechanical: Harwood’s weight swung through a limited arc and met buffers, while the later design could rotate fully. The available historical accounts support that contrast, not a performance ranking between the systems. (Seiko Museum)
Fortis presents its Harwood automatic as a landmark early production watch, with wrist movement transferring energy to the mainspring through a bumper-style system. That is the manufacturer’s historical account of its role in the watch’s production story. (Fortis)
