Jumping-Hour Watches: How the Display Works and Why It’s Back in 2026

A jumping-hour watch advances its hour numeral in one step at each hour boundary. Here’s how the mechanism works, how it differs from a wandering hour, and what 2026 releases show.

A jumping-hour watch shows the hour as a numeral in a window or on a disc. The numeral stays put during the hour, then advances in one discrete step at the hour boundary; minutes are shown separately, often by a hand or another window. That makes the display look digital, even though a mechanical watch drives it with gears, springs and a release mechanism.

Several 2026 releases have brought the complication back into view, but they do not establish a market-wide sales boom. The appeal is easier to pin down: a distinctive way to read time, with designs ranging from a single hour aperture to a two-disc 24-hour display.

How does a jumping-hour watch work?

The hour numeral sits on a disc or wheel behind an aperture, or is otherwise presented as a visible numeral. In a common mechanical arrangement, energy builds up during the hour and is released at the boundary to advance the display. The exact construction varies by movement, so this is a general principle rather than a blueprint used by every maker.

Bremont describes its Terra Nova mechanism as storing energy in a spring as the minutes progress, then releasing it to turn the hour disc. A discrete jump asks the mechanism to deliver more torque at once than a conventional hour hand needs as it moves continuously. Bremont says the hour disc on its BC634 calibre changes in under one tenth of a second; that is a claim for this calibre, not a standard speed for jumping-hour watches.

The minute indication is separate. Depending on the watch, it may be a central hand, a minute window or a peripheral ring. The display can therefore be mechanically complex while remaining quick to read: find the hour numeral, then read the minutes from their own indication.

How is it different from a wandering hour?

A true jumping hour stays in place and snaps to the next numeral at the hour boundary. A wandering-hour display moves the numeral progressively around the dial during the hour. The terms are sometimes grouped together in watch coverage, but the motion is different: Hautetime classifies the M.A.D.3 Vincent Calabrese as a wandering-hour watch, not a strict jumping-hour display.

It is also different from a travel or GMT hour hand that can be adjusted in one-hour steps. That hand jumps when set, but moves conventionally while the watch is running. With a jumping-hour complication, the discrete step is how the hour display advances during normal timekeeping.

Why are jumping-hour watches getting attention in 2026?

Audemars Piguet’s Neo Frame, Prestex’s Marcato, MeisterSinger’s Panthero and an expanded Bremont Terra Nova range provide visible examples of the complication in current releases. Wallpaper reported five new Terra Nova Jumping Hour pieces at Geneva Watch Days 2026, including a 35 mm case and additional colorways. These launches show renewed design attention, not a quantified rise in sales: no reliable market-wide growth figure is established.

The display gives watchmakers room to rethink the familiar arrangement of hands on a dial. The Marcato places its hour aperture at 9 o’clock and uses a central minute hand; Bremont and Audemars Piguet use different aperture layouts. Czapek takes a more elaborate route with The Time Jumper, which its brand describes as a 24-hour jumping-hour complication on two discs, with trailing minutes on a peripheral ring.

Where did the jumping hour come from?

There is no single, uncontested origin date in the available brand histories, and the milestones refer to different kinds of timepieces. Audemars Piguet describes the tradition as dating to 1650 and says it played a pioneering role in developing jumping-hour watches in the 1920s. Prestex instead traces the digital pocket-watch form to Joseph Pallweber’s patented system of 1883, then describes its evolution into wristwatches during the Art Deco era.

Those accounts should be read as attributed histories rather than a settled claim about the first jumping-hour wristwatch. A clock or early time display, a digital pocket-watch system and a wristwatch are not interchangeable milestones.

What should you compare when choosing one?

The shared name does not tell you how the watch reads or wears. Compare the display and movement as well as conventional case specifications.

What to check Why it matters
Hour motion Confirm that the numeral advances discretely during normal operation rather than travelling progressively as a wandering hour.
Readout layout Check where the hour appears and how minutes are shown: a central hand, a separate window, a rotating ring or another arrangement.
Movement Look for automatic or manual winding, the base calibre and whether the jumping-hour mechanism is a dedicated module.
Power and jump behavior Compare the stated power reserve and treat any jump-speed figure as specific to the maker’s named movement.
Wearability Consider diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length, case material and strap or bracelet.
Practical ownership Check water resistance, service support, availability and the current price for the exact version being considered.

What does “montre à guichet” mean?

Montre à guichet means “window watch” and describes a windowed display style associated with many jumping-hour designs. It refers to the way time is shown, not a guarantee that the hour jumps: check how the numeral moves during normal operation to distinguish a strict jumping hour from a wandering hour.
