Jumping Seconds vs. Deadbeat Seconds: How They Work in a Watch

Jumping seconds and deadbeat seconds describe a one-second-at-a-time display, not a movement type. See how mechanical watches create the effect and what it does—and does not—tell you.

“Jumping seconds” and “deadbeat seconds” describe a seconds hand that advances one second at a time, pausing between steps. The display does not tell you whether a watch is mechanical or quartz: mechanical movements can use an added mechanism to make the hand jump once per second.

What do jumping seconds and deadbeat seconds mean?

Both terms refer to the hand’s visible motion: it moves in discrete one-second steps rather than appearing to sweep continuously. In a deadbeat display, the hand pauses between those steps; F.P. Journe’s user manual describes it as remaining motionless until the second has elapsed. F.P. Journe user manual and Hodinkee’s dead-seconds glossary explain the term.

“Jumping seconds” is often used for the same kind of display. The names describe what the seconds hand does, not a single standardized mechanism or a movement type.

How can a mechanical watch make its seconds hand jump?

A mechanical watch’s balance continues oscillating at its normal rate. A jumping-seconds mechanism meters the hand’s motion so it waits and then advances once per second. The balance does not have to beat only once per second for the hand to move that way.

Converting balance motion into a one-second step

A. Lange & Söhne describes its RICHARD LANGE JUMPING SECONDS as receiving an impulse every second, which also drives the hand’s jump. In the brand’s technical explanation, a flirt-and-star arrangement converts six semi-oscillations of the balance into one hand step per second. The model’s display therefore makes 60 distinct steps per minute. RICHARD LANGE JUMPING SECONDS and A. Lange & Söhne’s Jumping Seconds Mechanism explainer.

Using a remontoire spring

A different documented design uses a remontoire spring that is rewound every second, as described in the British Horological Institute’s 2019 journal article, “A New Jumping Dead-Seconds Watch.” This is another way to produce a one-second jump; it should not be assumed to describe every jumping-seconds calibre. Why use a deadbeat seconds display?

A one-second step makes individual seconds easy to distinguish on the dial. A. Lange & Söhne presents its 60 steps per minute as enabling unambiguous readings; Jaquet Droz connects the technique’s history with precise measurement. These describe the display’s purpose and horological context, not standardized tests showing that jumping-seconds watches measure time more accurately than other watches. Does jumping seconds mean a watch is quartz?

No. The seconds-hand display alone does not establish the movement type. The cited A. Lange & Söhne and Jaquet Droz examples show that mechanical watches can have deadbeat or jumping seconds. Check the watch’s movement specifications to determine whether a particular model is mechanical or quartz.

What should you compare between jumping-seconds watches?

Comparison point What to check
Display Whether the seconds hand advances in one-second jumps or appears to move more smoothly.
Mechanism How the specific calibre meters the hand. Documented examples include the flirt-and-star arrangement described by A. Lange & Söhne and the once-per-second remontoire spring described by the British Horological Institute.
Purpose Whether you value reading individual seconds clearly, the history of the technique, or the mechanical complication itself.

The sources cited here do not provide standardized accuracy tests comparing models, a complete survey of current availability, or model-to-model price comparisons. Treat the jumping display as a feature of the watch’s time display, not evidence by itself of greater overall accuracy.

When is the seconds hand reset to zero?

The RICHARD LANGE JUMPING SECONDS combines its jumping display with a zero-reset function: pulling the crown returns the seconds hand to zero, allowing the watch to be set against a whole-second reference. That is a feature of this model, not a defining feature of all deadbeat-seconds watches. A. Lange & Söhne product information.
