A watch’s water-resistance marking is a test-based rating, not permission to use it at the printed depth. “Water-resistant” is more accurate than “waterproof”: seals can wear, and damage or service can affect the watch’s protection. Check the exact model’s manufacturer instructions for the activities it permits.
As a starting point, treat an unmarked watch as one to keep dry and 30 m as splash protection. Do not infer swimming or scuba suitability from a number alone; for scuba, choose a watch explicitly built and approved by its maker for diving.
What the number on the case really tells you
Water resistance describes how well a watch resists water entering the case under specified test conditions. It is not a permanent guarantee or a simple depth-to-activity conversion.
ISO 22810:2010 covers water-resistant watches intended for daily use and swimming. ISO distinguishes these from watches intended for scuba diving, covered by ISO 6425. The standards’ public summaries do not provide a basis here for detailed claims about test durations or pass/fail criteria.

- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Manufacturers may express a rating in metres or pressure units such as bar and ATM. The figures indicate test pressure, not necessarily a safe depth or activity:
- 30 m, 3 bar, or 3 ATM: commonly intended for splashes and rain; check the model’s instructions.
- 50 m, 5 bar, or 5 ATM: activity permissions vary by brand and model.
- 100 m, 10 bar, or 10 ATM: do not assume swimming or other activities are allowed without checking the manual.
- 200 m or more: a high marking alone does not establish that an ordinary watch is suitable for scuba.
- Diver’s watch: a purpose-built category with requirements beyond an ordinary water-resistance marking.
Casio explains that a metre indication represents test pressure and should not be read as permission to use the watch at that depth. Read Casio’s water-resistance guidance.
Water-resistance ratings in practical terms
| Marking | What it indicates | How to decide what is suitable |
|---|---|---|
| No water-resistance marking | No stated water-resistance rating. | Keep it dry unless the maker says otherwise. |
| Water Resistant, 30 m, 3 bar, or 3 ATM | Low pressure-resistance marking. | Usually treat as splash or rain protection; check the manual. |
| 50 m, 5 bar, or 5 ATM | Higher marking, but not a universal activity rule. | Follow the exact model’s permitted-use guidance. |
| 100 m, 10 bar, or 10 ATM | Higher pressure-resistance marking. | Confirm swimming and other activity permissions with the maker. |
| 200 m or more, without a diver designation | A high ordinary water-resistance marking. | Do not infer scuba suitability from the number alone. |
| Explicit diver’s-watch designation | A watch intended and specified for diving. | Check the maker’s stated limits and the watch’s condition. |
There is no universal conversion chart from a marking to an activity. Seiko’s chart, for example, permits different activities at different ratings and reserves scuba use in that chart for watches labeled Diver’s Watch 200 meters or Professional Diver’s Watch 1,000 meters. That is Seiko’s guidance, not a rule for every brand. See Seiko’s guidance.
The exact case marking and owner’s manual take priority over a generic chart. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular model rather than relying on retailer filters or general summaries.

Can I swim or dive with my 30 m watch?
A controlled pressure test does not reproduce every real-world exposure. Movement, impact, or jumping into water can create dynamic pressure; the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry explains that dynamic pressure can dominate in events such as jumping into water, while static pressure dominates at depth and low speed.
So a 30 m marking does not mean the watch is suitable for diving to 30 metres. More generally, do not treat any ordinary watch’s metre marking as a safe recreational depth. Follow the maker’s activity guidance and make sure the watch is in good condition.
- Ordinary watch marking: a pressure-test indication, not by itself a depth or activity guarantee.
- Diver’s-watch designation: indicates a watch intended for diving, subject to its maker’s instructions and stated limits.
- Bar or ATM: pressure units, not a promise of safe use at a corresponding depth.
Ordinary high-rated watches are not automatically dive watches
ISO distinguishes ordinary water-resistant watches intended for daily use and swimming from watches intended for scuba diving. A high metre marking on an ordinary watch does not on its own establish dive-watch suitability.
For scuba, look for an explicit diver’s-watch designation and confirm that the manufacturer approves the exact model for your intended use. Do not infer scuba suitability from a large number on the dial or case back.

Smartwatches need their own instructions
Do not assume traditional watch-rating guidance applies to every smartwatch. Check the exact model’s manufacturer instructions for permitted activities, water exposure, and any restrictions on bands or controls. A rating alone is not permission to use a smartwatch for swimming or scuba diving.
The watch’s condition may matter more than its rating
Water resistance is not permanent. Seals wear over time, and shock-related deformation or other damage can affect resistance.
Common ways water resistance declines
- A loose or pulled-out crown: Follow the manual’s instructions for closing the crown and controls before water exposure. Do not operate controls when wet unless the maker permits it.
- Aged gaskets: Seals can wear naturally. Casio recommends gasket replacement about every two or three years for the specific module 5710 manual; this is not a universal service interval.
- Impact or deformation: A shock can deform parts and affect water resistance. Have a watch checked after a significant impact.
- Temperature extremes, solvents, and cosmetics: Casio warns that these can accelerate seal deterioration. Check your own model’s guidance for showers, hot tubs, soaps, and other exposures.
- Saltwater residue: Seiko recommends washing off ocean water with fresh water and drying with a soft cloth. Seiko also cautions against rinsing directly under running water or washing with the crown pulled out; follow your own watch’s manual.
- Damage or repair: Damage or opening the case can affect resistance. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker whether inspection and testing are needed.
What to do after a battery change, repair, or impact
After a case opening or repair, do not assume the original water resistance has been restored. Ask the service provider whether the case was correctly resealed and whether a water-resistance check is appropriate.
If you rely on an older watch in water, or it has been opened, repaired, or significantly impacted, consult the maker or a qualified watchmaker about inspection and testing. The research supports checking after these events, but does not establish one testing interval for every make and model.

- 330 ft. (100 M) water resistance. In general, suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports.
- 12/24-hour timekeeping, 43 mm resin case with mineral dial window, Japanese quartz movement; Analog: 3 hands (hour, minute, second)
- Case / bezel material: Resin; Rotating bezel
- Day and date display at 3 o’clock
- Analog display, molded resin band with buckle closure; Accuracy: ±20 seconds per month
A pressure test can check the watch’s current resistance; it cannot repair damage or make an incorrectly assembled watch safe. Use a qualified watchmaker or authorized service provider if you lack the training and equipment to assess it.

- No rating: keep the watch dry unless its maker says otherwise.
- 30 m/3 bar: do not assume swimming or diving is allowed; check the manual.
- 50 m/5 bar or higher: check the exact model’s permitted activities rather than relying on a generic chart.
- Scuba diving: choose a watch explicitly intended and approved by its maker for diving.
- Older, opened, repaired, or impacted watch: ask the maker or a qualified watchmaker whether it should be checked before water use.
How to verify a watch before swimming
- Find the exact model reference and read the marking on the case back.
- Consult the official manual or manufacturer support page for that model.
- Check that the crown and applicable controls are positioned as the manual requires.
- Follow the maker’s advice about showers, heat, soaps, and water exposure.
- After ocean use, follow your model’s rinsing instructions. Seiko recommends fresh water and a soft cloth, while cautioning against direct running water and washing with the crown pulled out.
- If you suspect moisture has entered the case, stop exposing the watch to water and seek service.
What “waterproof” should mean to a watch owner
“Waterproof” should not mean safe in every kind of water forever. Water resistance depends on the watch’s marking, its intended use, the manufacturer’s instructions, and the current condition of its seals and case.
Instead of asking only “How many metres is it waterproof?”, ask: What activities does the maker approve for this exact model, and has it been checked after service or damage?
FAQ
Can I swim with a 30 m watch?
Do not assume so. A 30 m marking is not permission to swim or dive to that depth. Check the exact model’s manual for permitted activities.

Does 30 m water resistance mean I can dive to 30 metres?
No. The metre figure indicates test pressure, not a safe operating depth. For scuba, use a watch explicitly intended and approved by its maker for diving.
Is a high-rated ordinary watch automatically safe for scuba?
No. A high metre marking alone does not establish scuba suitability. Check for an explicit diver’s-watch designation and the manufacturer’s instructions.
How often should a water-resistant watch be tested?
There is no single interval established here for every watch. Follow the manufacturer’s service guidance, and ask about a check after the case is opened or repaired, after significant impact, or before relying on an older watch in water.
