How long is the Katsuo Trail?
The official overall map lists the route at 204.5 km with 6,150 m of cumulative ascent. The organizer’s event page rounds that to 205 km and describes nine sections. The route crosses Shizuoka landscapes from the coast and towns into mountain areas, with a mix of urban and coastal walking and less-maintained mountain routes. Section 5’s mapped itinerary includes an Abt Line ride between Sessokyo Onsen Station and Senzu Station. Treat the map’s distance and ascent as route-planning figures, not a promise about the time or effort your hike will take; check the current section map for the route you intend to follow.

Yes. The organizer publishes individual maps and GPX files for Sections 1–9 as well as the entire route. A section hike still needs its own transport and timing plan: check how you will reach the start, leave the finish, and, if necessary, stay overnight. The route’s endpoints and services may not make every section a simple station-to-station day walk.

Sections 1–3: coast, settlements and mountain trails
- Section 1, Yaizu to Shizuoka: Starts at Ishizuhama Park, passes the Ogawa Port area and Yaizu’s coastal streets, then heads inland via Rinsōin and over Takakusoyama (501 m) and Mankanho before descending toward Takumishuku. The organizer characterizes it as a progression from sea to mountain to town. Its A3 section map is at 1:35,000 and includes an elevation profile.
- Section 2, Shizuoka to Fujieda: The route page highlights Okabe-juku, rural scenery, Bikusiyama and the 700-year-old Hanazaki cedar, with Orep Okubo Campground near the finish. Local food and cultural stops are mentioned, but check opening days before building them into a schedule.
- Section 3, Fujieda to Shimada: Crosses Takane-yama and joins the Tokaido Nature Trail, with a suspension bridge and the mountain settlement of Sasama along the way. The organizer names the Sasama Mountain Village Exchange Center and Minshuku Fukui as overnight examples; confirm availability directly.
Section 4: a more demanding mountain section
Section 4 runs from the Sasama Mountain Village Exchange Center to Senzu Station via Musoren and Honjo mountains. The organizer says some parts are not fully maintained, describes it as potentially the trail’s hardest walk, and recommends it for intermediate hikers and above. Read the latest section map and trail notices before choosing it, and be realistic about your mountain-hiking experience and conditions.
Sections 5–9: use the current files for details
The organizer provides maps and GPX downloads for Sections 5–9, but the available route descriptions do not establish enough detail to characterize each section’s terrain or logistics here. Use the current files to assess distances, elevation, access and exits rather than extrapolating from the first four sections.

Where to get the Katsuo Trail map and GPX
Get the files from the organizer’s Map Data page. It offers an A3 printable overall map, individual section maps and hiking GPX files for Sections 1 through 9 and the full route. The organizer says the GPX data can be imported into GPS-compatible apps or devices for route navigation and activity tracking.

- Download the corresponding GPX file and import it into your chosen GPS-compatible app or device.
- Save an offline copy of the map and essential route information before departure, and check the source page for updated files or notices.
A GPX track is a navigation aid, not a substitute for checking the route on the ground or carrying a workable offline plan. Do not assume that an older printout or third-party track reflects the current route.

Where can you stay along the route?
The organizer names Orep Okubo Campground near the end of Section 2, and the Sasama Mountain Village Exchange Center and Minshuku Fukui as overnight examples for Section 3. These are planning leads, not confirmation of current availability or services. Contact the accommodation directly before relying on it, and check whether your intended start and finish can be connected by current public transport.
Is the Katsuo Trail open, and how do you reach the trailhead?
The organizer’s event notice dated September 27, 2026 said, “In autumn 2026, the full grand opening of the entire trail is planned.” That notice records an intended opening, not proof that the full route opened or that every section is currently accessible. Check the organizer’s latest information and relevant transport operators for trail status, closures, bus and rail services, routes and fares.

The event notice described a specific itinerary meeting at Yaizu Station and taking a Shizutetsu bus toward Ishizuhama Park, with an adult fare of ¥370 for that event. Those details were for the event itinerary and should not be treated as current general access information. Confirm the route and fare with the transport operator before travelling.

What should you prepare for?
Preparation depends on the section and conditions. The organizer’s event instructions advised participants to bring comfortable clothing and shoes, rainwear, a hat and water or salt replenishment for heat. Its event waiver also identifies falls, wildlife, dehydration, weather and uneven terrain as inherent risks. These event-specific reminders are not a complete kit list for every hike; plan for the selected section’s terrain, forecast, daylight and access to help. Give particular care to Section 4, where the organizer flags incompletely maintained portions.
