In brief: Ming-Chi Kuo’s June 2024 forecast got the important part right: Apple Watch Series 10 launched with a thinner chassis and a substantially larger display. However, Apple released 42mm and 46mm cases—not the reported 45mm and 49mm sizes. The 46mm Series 10 also ended up with slightly more listed active display area than the 49mm Apple Watch Ultra 2, despite being thinner and less rugged.
What Kuo predicted
On June 17, 2024, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple Watch Series 10 would receive a thinner design and larger displays. His report described an approximate move from 41mm to 45mm and from 45mm to 49mm, with the larger model’s screen approaching the Apple Watch Ultra’s size.

That was a forecast, not an Apple specification. Kuo did not confirm that Apple would use the name “Apple Watch X”; that branding was separate speculation. The original report is available from MacRumors.

Apple announced Series 10 on September 9, 2024, and began retail availability on September 20. The production models came in 42mm and 46mm case sizes. Both measured 9.7mm thick, which Apple described as its thinnest Apple Watch design.

Apple said Series 10 provided up to 9% more active display area than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9, and up to 30% more than Series 4, Series 5, and Series 6. The full measurements are in Apple’s technical specifications. The U.S. launch price was $399, although that September 2024 figure should not be treated as the current 2026 price.
Series 10 versus Ultra 2: which has the bigger screen?
The answer depends on what “bigger” means.
| Measurement | 46mm Series 10 | 49mm Ultra 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Case size | 46mm | 49mm |
| Active display area | 1,220 sq. mm | 1,164 sq. mm |
| Overall design | Slim, rounded standard watch | Thicker, rugged outdoor watch |
The Ultra 2 remains the physically larger watch. Its 49mm titanium case, protective raised edges, flat display, and rugged construction give it a more substantial presence. But Apple’s listed display-area figures show that the 46mm Series 10 has 56 square millimeters more active screen area than the Ultra 2.
That makes Kuo’s prediction directionally correct: Series 10 did approach the Ultra’s screen size—and, by Apple’s display-area measurement, slightly surpassed it. It would be misleading to say that Series 10 became a 49mm watch or replaced the Ultra’s physical design.
Why a smaller Series 10 can show more
Case-size numbers are not screen diagonals. On a rounded rectangular watch, usable display area depends on bezel width, aspect ratio, corner shape, and the amount of enclosure surrounding the panel.

Series 10 combines a wider aspect ratio, thinner bezels, more rounded corners, a curved-edge wide-angle OLED display, and a thinner enclosure. Those changes allow Apple to fit more active screen into a smaller-looking case. In practical use, the larger 46mm model can show more text and information at once without adopting the Ultra’s bulk.
The 42mm model is the more compact choice, but the 46mm is the model that delivers the 1,220-square-millimeter display and most directly fulfills the “Ultra-like screen” part of the story.
What the thinner design changed
At 9.7mm, Series 10 is nearly 10% thinner than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9. The benefit is most noticeable during ordinary wear and sleep tracking: the watch is lighter and less bulky on the wrist.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The thinner case did not deliver Ultra-level endurance. Series 10 retains Apple’s rating of up to 18 hours of battery life. It does charge faster, and Apple promoted a short charge as sufficient for up to eight hours of sleep tracking. The Ultra 2 remains the better option for long workouts, multi-day use, and activities where charging opportunities are limited.

It was more than a cosmetic redesign
Series 10 also introduced or emphasized several hardware and software features:
- A wide-angle OLED display.
- The S10 SiP and on-device Siri processing.
- Faster charging.
- Water-depth and water-temperature sensing.
- Music and podcast playback through the built-in speaker.
- Sleep-apnea notifications, where supported.
- watchOS 11 features including the redesigned Photos face and Smart Stack improvements.
Sleep-apnea notifications are not exclusive to Series 10 hardware; Apple also supports the feature on Series 9 and Ultra 2, subject to software, regulatory, and regional availability. The feature is not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice.
What Series 10 gives up compared with Ultra
The larger display does not erase the Ultra’s advantages. Ultra models include cellular connectivity as standard, a rugged titanium enclosure, a flat sapphire display, an Action button, longer battery life, more advanced GPS hardware, and capabilities aimed at outdoor sports and diving.

Series 10 is offered in aluminum or titanium, with GPS or GPS + Cellular configurations. Aluminum models use Ion-X front glass, while titanium models use sapphire crystal. Cellular service requires a compatible carrier plan and adds a recurring cost; availability varies by country.

Which size and configuration makes sense?
Choose the 42mm Series 10 if:
- You have a smaller wrist or prefer a less noticeable watch.
- You want the Series 10 redesign without the largest standard case.
- You value lower weight over maximum screen area.
Apple lists a 130–200mm wrist-fit range for the 42mm model.
Choose the 46mm Series 10 if:
- You want the largest standard Apple Watch display.
- You want more readable text and information without Ultra dimensions.
- You specifically want the 1,220-square-millimeter active display.
Apple lists a 140–245mm wrist-fit range for the 46mm model.
Choose an Ultra if:
- Battery life and outdoor durability matter more than thinness.
- You want cellular connectivity, the Action button, advanced GPS, or diving-oriented features.
- You prefer a larger, more imposing case.
Choose the SE instead if you mainly want Apple Watch basics at a lower price and do not need Series 10’s display, materials, charging, or newer health features.
Compatibility, bands, and regional limitations
Series 10 requires an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. Apple said existing 41mm bands work with the new 42mm case, while existing 45mm bands work with the 46mm case. Buyers should still check the exact connector family before purchasing, particularly when comparing standard-watch bands with 49mm Ultra bands.

Health features depend on the watch model, software, country, and regulatory approval. In the United States, Apple Watch units sold by Apple beginning January 18, 2024 were subject to the Blood Oxygen availability restriction, so buyers should not assume that feature is active on every U.S. Series 10 model. Check Apple’s regional specifications before buying.
Verdict: how accurate was Kuo?
Kuo’s central prediction was substantially accurate. Apple delivered the two defining changes he reported: a thinner Apple Watch and a larger display approaching the Ultra’s screen size.
His reported case-size progression was not exact. Apple launched 42mm and 46mm models rather than 45mm and 49mm models. But the final result was arguably more interesting than the rumor suggested: the 46mm Series 10 offers slightly more listed active display area than the larger 49mm Ultra 2, while remaining thinner, lighter, and less rugged.

So Series 10 is not an Ultra replacement. It is the better design for buyers who want maximum everyday screen area in a conventional Apple Watch, while Ultra remains the specialist choice for endurance, outdoor use, cellular connectivity, and ruggedness.
For anyone considering a purchase in 2026, compare Series 10 with Apple’s current lineup before deciding. Apple’s consumer Watch page is the appropriate source for current availability and pricing: apple.com/watch.
