Yes—some watchmakers use laboratory-grown diamonds as decorative stones in current watches. They are real diamonds made through a technological process, not simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. The important distinction when comparing watches is what the maker discloses about the stones, where they are set, and how the rest of the watch is built.
What does “lab-grown diamond” mean?
GIA describes a laboratory-grown diamond as a diamond made through a technological process rather than formed geologically. It has essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and optical and physical properties as a natural diamond. “Lab-grown” describes the stone’s origin; it does not mean the stone is a look-alike material.
The two principal growth methods are high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). For background, see GIA’s explanation of laboratory-grown diamonds.
Where are lab-grown diamonds used in watches?
They are decorative elements, not movement components. Their placement depends on the design: examples include bezels, dials, cases, crowns, and bracelets. These named watches show how varied the treatment can be.

How do I identify laboratory-grown diamonds?
You generally cannot establish a diamond’s origin by looking at it. GIA says traditional gemological observations and instruments cannot reliably distinguish laboratory-grown diamonds from natural ones because their key properties are essentially alike. Confirmation requires examination and advanced testing by a gemological laboratory. Read GIA’s identification guidance.
Do not assume a diamond-set watch uses lab-grown stones unless the manufacturer or a reliable accompanying document says so. GIA’s October 2020 announcement said its laboratory-grown diamond report identified whether a stone was created by CVD or HPHT and whether it might have undergone post-growth color treatment. That is a dated description of that reporting service, not evidence that every watch stone has a report or that today’s report format is unchanged. See GIA’s 2020 announcement.

What does GIA’s current assessment say about quality?
GIA announced on August 26, 2025, that beginning October 1, 2025, its assessment for D-to-Z laboratory-grown diamonds would use the descriptive categories “Premium” and “Standard,” based on an overall assessment of clarity, color, and cut, rather than the nomenclature it developed for natural diamonds. This describes GIA’s announced service, not the grading or documentation of stones in the watches above; check GIA’s current service details for any assessment-specific questions. Read GIA’s announcement.
How should you compare lab-grown diamond watches?
The examples above are not direct substitutes: they differ in scale, design, specifications, and price presentation. Compare the specific watch and its documentation rather than treating carat weight or the phrase “lab-grown” as a complete measure of value.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Origin disclosure and placement: Check whether the maker explicitly identifies the stones as lab-grown and whether they appear on the bezel, dial, case, crown, bracelet, or more than one part.
- Stone details: Note any published count, cut, or carat weight. A carat figure may refer to stones distributed across different parts of a particular watch, so it is not a like-for-like comparison across models.
- Setting and design: Consider the arrangement, dial treatment, and how prominent the stones are. A pavé bezel and a watch covered across multiple exterior surfaces make very different visual statements.
- Watch specifications: Compare movement type, case material and diameter, crystal, and water resistance according to how you plan to wear the watch.
- Price and availability: Check the current official product page or a verified retailer. Prices and inventory change, and a price shown for one market should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
These product-specific examples establish that several makers offer watches with disclosed lab-grown diamonds; they do not establish how common the stones are across the watch market.
