Dangerous Things’ xLED is a battery-free field indicator; its xSIID combines an LED with writable NFC memory. Neither is a GPS tracker or a medical light-therapy device, and the manufacturer says its implants are not certified by a government agency for implantation.
What is an LED implant?
It is a subdermal device that produces visible light when energized from outside the body. In the xLED, a coil picks up energy from a compatible RFID or NFC field and powers an LED. There is no battery: the light appears only while the device is in a suitable field.
That visible response is an indicator, not a message. The xLED does not store data or transmit an identity, and it cannot be read or written. An illuminated implant does not mean it has tracked, identified, or medically treated its wearer.
How do xLED and xSIID differ?
They serve different purposes. The xLED detects a matching field by lighting up. The xSIID is an NFC implant with writable memory and an integrated, power-harvesting LED.

The key distinction is function, not just size: xLED is a field detector, while xSIID adds NFC memory. Both rely on an external field for power to light the LED.
Can a phone make an LED implant light up?
According to the vendor, an HF xLED can be energized by phones that produce a compatible 13.56 MHz NFC field. That can make the LED flash or glow while the field is present; it does not make the xLED a phone-readable tag. The device has no data to read.

The LF xLED operates at 125 kHz, so a phone’s NFC field is not the matching signal. The vendor says LF versions can be energized with wireless chargers and low-frequency readers. Compatibility depends on the field’s frequency and the reader’s ability to energize the implant; a generic USB reader is not necessarily suitable.
An xSIID is different: it has NFC Type 2 memory as well as the LED. It is designed as an NFC device, but successful use still depends on the reader and phone supporting the relevant NFC standard and interaction. The LED alone does not indicate that a phone has read or written memory.

What does an LED implant do—and not do?
What it can do
- The xLED can visibly indicate that it is within a compatible RFID/NFC field.
- The xSIID can combine a light indicator with NFC memory that can be written to by compatible equipment.
- Both can be energized without an internal battery while a suitable external field is present.
What it does not do
- The xLED does not store or transmit data.
- Neither implant is a GPS device or general-purpose location tracker.
- A light turning on is not evidence of medical benefit, treatment, or a health measurement.
Are LED implants safe?
These are invasive devices, and the manufacturer says its x-series implants have not been certified by a government regulatory agency for implantation or use inside the human body. It states that use is at the user’s own risk and recommends professional body-piercing or body-modification partners for installation. That is not equivalent to medical approval or a clinical finding that implantation is safe.
Evidence about external LED light therapy cannot establish the safety of an LED implanted under the skin. The FDA’s warnings about external low-level light therapy include risks such as eye injury, burns, pigmentation changes, pain, photosensitivity, and cautions involving pregnancy or active implants. Those warnings concern external treatment devices, not implanted electronics.

A 2019 randomized study of external red LED exposure included 60 participants in STARS 1 and 55 in STARS 2. Participants received light three times weekly for three weeks; at some high light doses, blistering or prolonged redness limited the dose. The study reported no serious adverse events and tolerated limits of 320 J/cm² for participants with skin of color and 480 J/cm² for non-Hispanic Caucasian participants. These are external-phototherapy findings, not safe-dose limits for an implanted LED, and they do not validate an implant.

The listed xLED and xSIID are supplied in sterile injector packaging, but that does not make insertion a do-it-yourself procedure or establish that implantation is medically approved. The manufacturer prefers customers to use professional body-piercing or body-modification partners. Anyone considering an implant should weigh the invasive nature of placement, the manufacturer’s certification disclaimer, and the practical limits of a device that only works with compatible external equipment.

Where did the light-up implant idea come from?
Light-up subdermal devices predate the current xLED and xSIID product listings. A 2015 VICE report covered the Northstar, a light-up implant associated with the grinder and biohacker community, and described enthusiasts experimenting in an area without strong medical support. That history explains the cyborg-augmentation appeal, but it is not evidence of clinical efficacy or safety.
