If you’re wondering what some lesser-known Rolex models are, the Milgauss, Air-King, Sea-Dweller, Explorer II and Cellini offer a useful tour of the brand’s less familiar stories. “Lesser-known” here is a way to look beyond the best-known models, not a claim that these watches are rare or unpopular.
Five Rolex models with distinctive stories
Rolex’s historical timeline places the first Milgauss in 1956, Air-King in 1958, Sea-Dweller in 1967 and Explorer II in 1971. The Cellini followed in 1968, as a dress-watch collection. Those dates are milestones in Rolex’s own account, not a ranking of how obscure the watches are.

Rolex’s current collection page lists the Air-King, Sea-Dweller and Explorer II. Collection lineups can change, so check the brand’s current watch collection for present listings. The historical sources do not establish whether Cellini remains a current line or whether it is interchangeable with the separately listed 1908 model.

Rolex records the first Milgauss in 1956. Its stated purpose was to protect the movement from magnetic interference: the company says its engineers developed an internal shield for that job. The name and design story point to a practical concern in technical workplaces, rather than a diving or exploration role. Rolex describes the Milgauss in its Oyster Story; that historical explanation does not mean the model appears in the current collection listing cited above.

Air-King: a 1958 milestone
The Air-King’s first-model milestone dates to 1958. The fact that it remains on Rolex’s current collection page makes it a bridge between the brand’s historical timeline and its present lineup. The sources cited here establish that date and current listing, but do not support a more specific technical origin story or claims about rarity or popularity.
Sea-Dweller: built for deep-sea work
Rolex describes the Sea-Dweller as a tool watch created to accompany pioneers of deep-sea exploration. It launched in 1967 with an initial waterproof guarantee of 610 metres (2,000 feet). Rolex says the guarantee reached 1,220 metres (4,000 feet) in 1978. These are historical specifications associated with those milestones, not a statement of the specifications of every Sea-Dweller sold today.
One feature tied to saturation diving is the helium escape valve. During decompression, excess pressure built up inside the watch can be released through the valve. Rolex’s Sea-Dweller model page describes the model and its deep-sea role; it also appears on the brand’s current collection page.

Explorer II: a 24-hour reference for places without clear day and night
Rolex presented the Explorer II in 1971 for polar explorers and speleologists. Its additional 24-hour hand works with a fixed 24-hour bezel to help the wearer distinguish day from night—useful in environments where daylight may be absent or unreliable. That function sets it apart from a watch whose display relies only on a conventional 12-hour cycle. The Explorer II remains listed in Rolex’s Explorer collection.
Cellini: Rolex’s dress-watch history
Rolex created the Cellini collection in 1968 for non-Oyster Perpetual dress watches. That history is distinct from the current 1908 model listing: the available sources do not establish that the 1908 is a continuation of Cellini or that the names are interchangeable. Treat Cellini as a historical collection unless a current Rolex source confirms otherwise.
