Longines Heritage Diver 1967 Review: A Vintage Look, a Tall Case

The Heritage Diver 1967 delivers vintage character and a capable column-wheel chronograph, but its estimated 16 mm case height may wear large.

The Longines Heritage Diver 1967 pairs a distinctive bordeaux bezel and convincingly vintage dial with a capable automatic column-wheel chronograph. Its main compromise is the case: one 2015 reviewer estimated it at about 16 mm thick, giving the 42 mm watch a high profile. This review reconstructs launch-era assessments rather than claiming a new hands-on test or current stock check.

What is the Longines Heritage Diver 1967?

Introduced at Baselworld in 2015, the Heritage Diver 1967 reinterprets Longines’ 1967 skin-diver chronograph, identified by SJX as reference 7981. The original reportedly measured 40 mm; the reissue is 42 mm. Contemporary reviews describe a stainless-steel case, bordeaux aluminum bezel, black opaline dial, sapphire crystal and date display. The launch-era reference and configuration matter: strap and bracelet choices varied, so verify the exact suffix and contents when considering an individual watch.

The red bezel, chunky hands and markers, and textured dial establish its vintage character. Silver-colored registers contrast against the black dial, while the black 12-hour counter at six is deliberately subdued. It gives the dial the visual balance of a two-register chronograph even though the modern movement adds a third counter. The oversized minute counter at three and the grained dial surface are other details noted by contemporary reviewers. Time+Tide’s March 2015 hands-on review, Hodinkee’s launch coverage and SJX’s close-up review document those design choices.

How does it wear, and how thick is the case?

The 42 mm diameter is larger than the reported 40 mm original, but diameter is only part of the fit equation. Time+Tide estimated the reissue’s thickness at around 16 mm, explicitly noting that this was not a figure supplied in the press material. Treat it as a reviewer estimate, not an official specification. That height is the central ergonomic trade-off: the watch can feel substantial on the wrist and may sit high under a cuff.

LONGINES Legend Diver Automatic Watch
  • Automatic L888 Movement, Hours, minutes, seconds, and date. Screw-down case back
  • Blue Leather strap with buckle
  • 5 Year International Warranty

Hodinkee’s reviewer found the 42 mm case comfortable, while Time+Tide highlighted thickness as the bigger concern. Those are individual impressions, not a universal fit verdict. If wrist height is important to you, check the watch in person or confirm measurements against the precise example rather than relying on diameter alone. Time+Tide and Hodinkee provide the contemporary reviewer context.

What movement and chronograph functions does it have?

The watch uses the automatic Longines L688.2 column-wheel chronograph. Time+Tide also identifies it as ETA A08.231; contemporary coverage describes the movement as ETA-made for Longines and based on the Valgranges/Valjoux 7750 family. Launch-era sources report a 54-hour power reserve. The column-wheel architecture is a notable mechanical feature in a watch whose appeal is not only its period styling.

  • Chronograph: elapsed seconds, minutes and a 12-hour counter at six. The six o’clock counter is blacked out to soften the appearance of the third register.
  • Bezel: bordeaux aluminum with elapsed-time markings and a second sequence intended for a second time zone.
  • Inner scale: a tachymeter for calculating speed over a measured distance.
  • Date: positioned between four and five. SJX reports that correction is made with a pin-operated pusher at 11 o’clock.

The date and hidden third register add everyday and chronograph functionality, but they are departures from the two-register, no-date look of the original. Whether that is a welcome modernization or a compromise depends on how strictly you value historical fidelity. Specifications and functions are reported in the contemporary SJX launch article and Time+Tide review.

Is it a real dive watch?

Contemporary Hodinkee and SJX coverage reports a 30 bar (300 m) water-resistance rating, which is a substantial manufacturer-reported specification. That rating makes the model more than a chronograph with a dive-style bezel on paper. It does not, by itself, establish that a particular used or vintage example remains water-resistant today. Seals age, repairs and condition vary, and the contemporary articles do not represent independent water-resistance testing of every watch.

For an individual pre-owned example, treat water resistance as a condition question: do not assume the original rating still applies without suitable inspection and testing by a qualified watch service professional. The launch-era rating is reported by Hodinkee and SJX.

What are the main strengths and compromises?

Strength Trade-off
Distinctive bordeaux bezel, textured black dial and period-inspired hands and markers. The 42 mm reissue is larger than the reported 40 mm original, and the estimated case height may wear prominently.
Automatic column-wheel chronograph with a 12-hour counter and reported 54-hour reserve. The third register and date depart from the original’s simpler two-register, no-date appearance.
Contemporary coverage reports 300 m water resistance. A rating from launch-era coverage cannot confirm the condition or water resistance of a specific used watch.
Several strap or bracelet configurations were reported. Availability and exact configuration depend on the reference suffix and individual listing.

Reviewer feedback on operation was not uniformly glowing: Hodinkee described the pushers as solid but somewhat jerky. That is a subjective launch-era observation rather than a measured defect, and it is worth checking the chronograph controls on the particular watch if possible.

What did it cost, and what should buyers verify now?

Hodinkee and SJX reported a US$3,100 launch price in 2015. That is historical launch pricing, not a current retail price or estimate of present-day value. The contemporary sources do not establish current availability or a market-wide resale value.

Before buying a particular example, verify its exact reference and configuration, condition, service history, and the seller’s evidence for current water resistance. Strap and bracelet choices reported at launch included steel bracelet, rubber and leather or crocodile/alligator options, but the precise offering depended on the variant. Present-day price and stock need to be checked against the specific listing; the 2015 launch figures cannot answer either question. Historical launch details appear in Hodinkee and SJX.

Who should consider the Heritage Diver 1967?

It is best suited to someone who wants a characterful vintage-inspired chronograph, values the column-wheel movement and appreciates a dive-watch specification alongside the period styling. The case height is the decisive reservation: if a slim, low-sitting watch is a priority, the roughly 16 mm reviewer estimate deserves particular attention. Buyers seeking strict reproduction of the 1967 layout should also weigh the modern date and visually disguised third register before choosing it.
