Louis Vuitton’s 2023 Tambour relaunch changed the watch’s proportions and product identity: the new steel model is a lugless 40mm automatic with an integrated bracelet and an 8.3mm-thick case. It is not simply the earlier Tambour in a new finish. The collection dates to 2002, but the relaunch positioned this version as a slimmer, higher-end watch with its own movement and a more continuous case-and-bracelet design.
What changed in the Tambour relaunch?
Louis Vuitton introduced the Tambour collection in 2002. The 2023 relaunch kept the line’s name and recognizable round case while shifting the watch toward a thinner, integrated-bracelet design. The steel launch model is reference W1ST10: a 40mm watch without conventional lugs, so the bracelet meets the case directly rather than attaching between projecting lugs. Louis Vuitton describes the bracelet as flowing into the slim case and calls the collection unisex. Those are the brand’s design and positioning descriptions, not independent findings about how the watch fits different wrists. The key change is visual as much as mechanical: the case and bracelet read as a connected whole, while the slim profile gives the Tambour a more restrained silhouette than the collection’s earlier, generally chunkier identity.
How thin is the steel Tambour, and what does it display?
For the production steel W1ST10, Hodinkee reported a 40mm diameter and 8.3mm thickness at launch in 2023. It has a small-seconds display rather than a central seconds hand. Those dimensions make the relaunch notably slim in profile, though the 40mm diameter remains an important part of its wrist presence.

A separate 2023 hands-on report from The 1916 Company measured an explicitly pre-production example at 8.6mm thick. That figure describes a prototype, not the production specification reported for the steel launch model; the two numbers should not be treated as conflicting measurements of the same finished watch. What movement powers it?
The steel launch watch uses the LFT023 automatic calibre. Louis Vuitton’s official collection page identifies it as the first proprietary automatic three-hand movement designed by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. The company presents the movement as an in-house milestone for the Tambour; that description should not be confused with an independently established comparison against other watchmakers’ calibres. What did the steel model cost at launch?
Hodinkee reported a launch price of €19,000 for the steel W1ST10 in 2023. This is launch-era pricing, not a current quote, and it does not establish the present price or availability of the steel model in the United States or another market.
Louis Vuitton’s US site currently lists a 40mm Tambour in yellow gold at $65,000. That is a different case-material variant, not the steel W1ST10, so its price cannot be used as the current price of the steel watch. The official listing is useful for confirming that the gold version is offered in the US, but it does not establish current US steel-model inventory or pricing. Why did Louis Vuitton call it a major launch?
Vogue reported that Louis Vuitton chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault called the relaunch “the most important watch launch of Louis Vuitton in the last 20 years.” This is Arnault’s characterization of the launch, not an independently measured ranking.
