Both designs turn an unconventional display into a reminder to attend to the present.
Who is Ludovic Ballouard?
Ballouard was born in Brittany in 1971 to a Breton father and a Dutch mother. According to his brand’s 2022 catalog, his interest in small mechanical objects led him to train in watchmaking. Before moving to Geneva, he spent six years as a technician working on airplane control panels.
The catalog traces his watchmaking career through three years in Franck Muller’s after-sales service and seven years at F.P. Journe. During his final three years at Journe, he assembled the Sonnerie Souveraine. He started his own watchmaking venture in May 2009 and completed the first Upside Down in December of that year. The brand’s 2022 catalog is the source for this chronology.
How does the Upside Down work?
On the Upside Down, the hour numerals are inverted except for the current hour, which appears upright. As the hour changes, the display changes with it. The arrangement is unusual, but its idea is direct: the present hour is the one to notice.

A brand-hosted feature connects Ballouard’s idea to the financial crisis and a period when, as he described it, numbers seemed to be turned upside down. In that feature, Ballouard explains: “What matters is living here and now, living in the moment. That’s when I thought: what if I made a watch where all the numerals were upside down except for the current hour?” The feature presents the display as both a timekeeping device and an expression of that outlook.
An independent profile describes the jumping-hour mechanism as using a snail cam linked to Maltese-cross mechanisms. That is a secondary technical account, rather than a detailed explanation from the brand’s technical materials. IndependentWatchmaking.com’s profile gives that description.

What is the Half Time?
The Half Time takes a different visual route. Its hour numeral is divided into pieces that align to form the current hour at the top of the dial; minutes are shown separately on a retrograde display. Instead of singling out one upright numeral, it makes the hour legible by bringing its halves together.
The model was presented in January 2012, according to a contemporaneous launch announcement. That announcement called its complication patented; the brand-hosted feature also dates the Half Time to 2012.

How the two signature displays differ

The difference is not simply one of appearance: each watch communicates the hour through a distinct display concept. The cited sources do not establish a comparative legibility advantage for either model.
What does “the present moment” mean in Ballouard’s watches?
On the Upside Down, one hour is visually resolved while the others are left inverted. In a 2024 New York Times article excerpt reproduced by the brand, Ballouard put the idea this way: “The past is gone,” he said. “The future is unknown,” and only the present hour “clicks in place, so you focus on the present moment.” The quotation describes the intention behind the display, not a claim that the watch measures time differently. The 2024 excerpt is the source for the statement.

Independent work and recognition
Ballouard’s work includes a contribution to the Harry Winston Opus XIII, listed alongside his own watches on the brand’s media page. A 2025 brand-hosted feature says he became a member of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) in 2018.
His stated preference for independence is consistent with the design-led approach of his watches. In an interview with Watch Affinity, Ballouard said: “Stay independent. Keep your creative freedom.” He contrasted that freedom with the pressure a commercial brand may face to make work around profitability. The interview is the source for his remarks.

What dated price and availability reports can—and cannot—tell you
A 2024 New York Times article excerpt reproduced by the brand reported a price of CHF 87,000, excluding taxes, for a standard platinum Upside Down and CHF 180,000, excluding taxes, for an osmium-dial version. The same excerpt reported an 18-month waiting list at that time. These are historical figures, not current quotations or evidence of present availability. Confirm current pricing, materials, production timing and availability directly with the brand or an authorized retailer.
The excerpt is available at the brand-hosted article PDF. Its dated figures give context for the watches’ positioning, but do not establish what a buyer would pay or how long an order would take now.
