Luxury Watches: Why Exclusivity Persists—and How to Start Collecting

Swiss watchmaking’s high-end repositioning, concentrated market and mechanical heritage sustain luxury exclusivity. Pre-owned and lower-priced mechanical watches offer other ways into collecting, with distinct verification and service trade-offs.

Luxury watches are exclusive because the Swiss industry deliberately rebuilt itself around high-end mechanical products, while concentrated ownership, controlled production capabilities and heritage-based value reinforce that positioning. That market structure can make premium watches difficult to access, but it does not mean watch collecting itself requires a luxury budget: pre-owned watches and lower-priced mechanical models offer different entry points, each with trade-offs.

Why luxury watches became exclusive

The modern luxury-watch market grew in part from a strategic response to disruption. During the quartz-era crisis, Swiss watchmaking lost six in ten sector jobs between 1970 and 1985, and the number of Swiss watch manufacturers fell from 1,618 to 634, according to the Fondation Haute Horlogerie (FHH) industry overview. FHH says the industry recovered by moving toward high-end production and rebranding the mechanical watch as a luxury product.

That repositioning attached value not just to telling time, but to mechanical craft, design, brand history and the cultural meaning of owning a watch. It also created a sharp difference between how many watches are exported and how much value they represent: in 2021, mechanical watches made up 37% of Swiss export volume but more than 85% of export value, FHH reports. Those figures illustrate the premium character of mechanical exports; they do not describe all watches sold worldwide or what consumers actually paid at retail.

Swiss market concentration and control over production capabilities also help sustain exclusivity. FHH estimates that a small number of Swiss brands captured around two-thirds of the market and links vertical integration partly to exclusivity and supply security. This is evidence of an industry structure and stated strategic priorities—not proof that any particular brand deliberately withholds stock or that scarcity is always artificial.

What export figures do—and do not—say about access

Switzerland’s government overview says watches priced above USD 3,000 made up the largest share of Swiss exports by value. That describes the composition of exports, not household affordability, the share of people who own luxury watches or end-consumer transaction prices. Presence Switzerland’s watchmaking overview offers context on the industry’s luxury positioning, but export values should not be mistaken for a direct measure of who can buy a watch.

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) reported that Swiss watch exports in the first half of 2026 were worth CHF 12.8 billion, down 0.7% year over year. More than seven million watches shipped, up 2.3%. FH said mechanical watches exported below CHF 500 mainly drove the increase in units, while the CHF 500–3,000 segment declined 5.7% in value. These are export-price categories, not retail price bands. The figures and period are from FH’s July 21, 2026 first-half export release.

Export statistics are useful for tracking shipments and broad market shifts, but they cannot establish what consumers paid, how many watches sold to end users, or how a particular company performed. FH’s statistics page explains that its customs-derived export values are export prices and that results can be revised. When accessed, August 2026 was the latest monthly result shown; the next scheduled release was October 20, 2026.

FHH’s summary of Deloitte and Morgan Stanley-LuxeConsult reporting describes a polarized market: high-end segments were resilient, while more affordable products faced weaker performance and competition from smartwatches. As summarized by FHH, Swiss exports fell 2.8% in value to CHF 26 billion and 9.4% in volume to 15.3 million units in 2024. In the first ten months of 2025, they fell 1.6% in value to CHF 21.2 billion and 5.5% in volume to 11.9 million units. These are export results for the stated periods, not measures of retail demand or affordability. See FHH’s summary of the 2025 industry reports.

Ways to start collecting without buying new luxury

There is no single correct entry point. New luxury, pre-owned luxury and lower-priced mechanical watches involve different purchase costs, model availability and levels of buyer responsibility. The available industry reporting establishes interest in pre-owned watches, but it does not provide a price comparison for particular models or verify the performance of any resale platform.

Route What it can offer What to check
New luxury watch A current model bought new, with the brand’s purchase and service arrangements. Retail price, availability and the specific warranty and service terms. The cited export data does not establish retail pricing or access to any particular reference.
Pre-owned luxury watch A possible lower-cost route than buying new, and access to discontinued references. Authenticity, condition, ownership history, seller accountability, warranty and future service options. A lower price is not guaranteed, especially for sought-after watches.
Lower-priced mechanical watch A way to explore mechanical watch ownership without starting with a luxury product. FH identified sub-CHF 500 mechanical watches as a main driver of Swiss export unit growth in the first half of 2026. That CHF 500 threshold is an export-price category, not a recommended retail budget. Compare the actual purchase price, servicing needs and features of the watch you are considering.

For a pre-owned purchase, treat provenance and condition as part of the price: ask what documentation comes with the watch, what service history is available, whether the seller offers a clear return policy, and who is responsible if a problem emerges. The value of a discontinued reference is not the same as verified authenticity or dependable after-sales support.

What buyers say about pre-owned watches and in-person shopping

In FHH’s account of the 2025 Deloitte study, 40% of Gen Z respondents said they were likely to buy a pre-owned watch in the next twelve months. This is a stated intention among surveyed respondents, not a count of purchases made. FHH’s account of Deloitte’s 2023 study separately says second-hand interest had shifted toward higher price ranges; that finding comes from a different study year and context.

The same FHH summary says 60% of respondents were more likely to buy from a physical store, citing the opportunity to feel and try on a watch, build relationships and get advice. That is a survey response, not observed buying behavior. It suggests why an in-person visit can matter when comparing fit, condition or seller confidence, without proving that stores are always safer or less expensive.

Exclusivity is a market pattern, not proof of social impact

Calling luxury watchmaking “antidemocratizing” can describe how premium positioning and concentrated control narrow access to particular products. The evidence here does not measure whether watches cause social inequality, establish that all luxury watches are inaccessible, or show intentional inventory manipulation by a particular brand. It supports a more precise conclusion: the Swiss industry built much of its identity and export value around high-end mechanical watches, while other price points and routes into collecting remain available.

Industry leaders also describe a business facing recurring change. Cyrille Vigneron, former Cartier CEO (2016–2024) and Chairman of Cartier Culture and Philanthropy, told FHH: “The watch industry has been going through numerous cycles of disruption. Now these are more frequent with shorter horizons, requiring enhanced agility.” The observation helps explain why exclusivity and heritage coexist with shifts in production, consumer interest and sales channels; it does not change what export statistics can prove.
