The MAEN Manhattan 37 – MSS.02 is a limited-edition collaboration with French creative seconde/seconde/ that turns the familiar watch dial into a nuclear-history reference: its ice-grey face has no logo, indices, or indicators, while a radiation symbol serves as the seconds hand. MAEN frames those changes as a metaphor for the Manhattan Project and its consequences. The design is striking, but the interpretation is the brand’s, not a substitute for historical analysis.
What makes the MSS.02 different?
MAEN says it removed the dial’s logo, indices, and indicators, leaving a stripped-back ice-grey surface. The seconds hand is replaced by a radiation symbol. The result makes the watch’s central idea visible at a glance: the dial is deliberately deprived of its usual orientation and branding, while the seconds display carries the nuclear symbol.
MAEN describes the blank dial as a metaphor for “nuclear nothingness” and the consequences of the Manhattan Project. That is the maker’s creative framing. On the caseback, the collaboration adds an inscription attributed by MAEN to J. Robert Oppenheimer: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds – I suppose we all thought that, one way or another”. The product page presents it as a historical quote; the inscription and attribution should not be taken as an independent account of the quotation’s textual history.

Although the nominal diameter is 37 mm, MAEN notes that the integrated design wears larger than that figure may suggest. Wrist fit is personal, and the listed dimensions alone cannot establish how it will feel on a particular wearer.
Is the MAEN Manhattan 37 – MSS.02 still available?
MAEN’s collection page labels the edition “Retired.” The US product page describes it as a limited edition offered only during a 24-hour preorder, after which it would no longer be available. That page also displays a $1,110 price and says preorders were expected to ship around the end of November, but those are statements tied to the preorder listing—not confirmation of a current offer, price, or inventory.

MSS.02 is a distinct collaboration, not simply another dial option under the same name. Standard Manhattan 37 variants use the broader platform but vary by configuration and stock; MAEN’s M2.1.7 product page is one example. Compare the exact variant’s movement, date configuration, dial, case and bracelet details, availability, and price rather than assuming the MSS.02 specifications or design apply to every Manhattan 37.

The MAEN x IFL Manhattan 37 IFL.02 is a separate collaboration. Its hand-painted graffiti dial and applied polished indicators offer a useful contrast: IFL.02 makes its dial more expressive, whereas seconde/seconde/ removes the usual markers and turns the seconds hand into the central visual statement. They are not alternate names for the same edition.
Warranty note
The US product page states a two-year warranty from arrival and lists exclusions that include damage caused by abnormal use, negligence, incorrect use, or water damage. Warranty coverage can depend on where a watch was purchased; check the current terms for your region and seller before buying.
