METAS, Switzerland’s Federal Institute of Metrology, requires the movement to qualify as an ISO 3159 chronometer and then assesses the complete watch for accuracy, magnetic resistance, power reserve and water resistance. Its stated daily-rate criterion is 0 to +5 seconds per day.
What does Master Chronometer mean?
A Master Chronometer watch has passed a set of technical requirements established by METAS. The certification begins with an ISO 3159-certified chronometer movement, but it goes further: the movement and the finished watch are tested. That distinction matters because the label covers more than the movement’s rate in a controlled test.

METAS says the standard is open to qualifying Swiss-made watches from brands whose movements meet ISO 3159. OMEGA introduced the designation in 2015 and identifies the Globemaster as the first watch to attain it. The certification is not limited to OMEGA, and not every OMEGA watch carries it; check the exact model reference.
How does Master Chronometer compare with an ISO chronometer?
METAS describes ISO 3159 chronometer certification as a movement-level assessment. Master Chronometer adds tests of the watch as a complete product and applies a different daily-rate criterion.

The +5-second upper limit means the watch may gain time; “Master Chronometer” does not mean perfect accuracy or zero deviation. These are certification criteria, not a guarantee that every example will keep the same rate in every wearer’s daily conditions over time.
What does the certification test?
Accuracy in different conditions
METAS evaluates accuracy under varying factors rather than relying only on a movement’s initial rate. OMEGA’s published description says its test process includes temperature fluctuation and different watch positions. The certification’s stated daily-rate range is 0 to +5 seconds per day; it should not be read as a promise of that exact result in all real-world use.
Magnetic resistance
The standard includes exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss, equivalent to 1.5 tesla, as specified in METAS-N001. This is a tested threshold, not immunity to every field, exposure level or circumstance. OMEGA names phones, laptops, metal handbag clasps, induction hobs and automatic doors as everyday sources of magnetic fields; the certification is intended to address magnetic resistance, but sensible care still applies.

Power reserve and water resistance
METAS includes power reserve and water resistance among the watch-level performance areas. OMEGA’s description of its tests also names both. The certification does not replace checking the particular watch’s stated water-resistance rating or following its user manual for use and maintenance.

METAS is Switzerland’s Federal Institute of Metrology and the certification authority involved. Its requirements specify eligibility, test cycles and technical criteria. METAS describes independent certification of the finished watch and says it monitors testing through audits, spot checks and statistical analysis.
OMEGA’s own account describes its process as eight tests over ten days and 283 steps. Those figures are OMEGA’s description of its testing process, not separate independent performance statistics. For the criteria defining the designation, METAS’s requirements are the primary reference.

What changed in 2026?
On March 26, 2026, OMEGA announced that the Constellation Observatory became the first two-hand watch to achieve Master Chronometer certification. The announcement attributes the result to acoustic testing combined with optical hand tracking. This is a development in how that watch was tested; OMEGA did not announce that the broader certification criteria had been abandoned.
How can you tell whether a particular OMEGA is certified?
Do not infer certification from the brand, collection name or appearance. Check the exact reference on the product listing and its accompanying documentation for an explicit Master Chronometer designation. A certification applies to qualifying models, not automatically to every watch in a collection or every OMEGA watch.

OMEGA describes the designation as part of its history and identity. In its October 21, 2025 retrospective, CEO Raynald Aeschlimann said: “Master Chronometer is more than a certification for OMEGA. It’s a demonstration of our DNA, and our historic quest for excellence that goes beyond the accepted standards.” That is the brand’s view; the certification’s requirements and thresholds are set out by METAS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my phone or other everyday items magnetize my watch?
Phones, laptops, metal handbag clasps, induction hobs and automatic doors are among the everyday magnetic-field sources OMEGA identifies. Master Chronometer certification includes a 15,000-gauss test, but that is not a blanket guarantee against every magnetic field or exposure. Follow the watch’s manual if you suspect it has been affected.
