Quartz watches generally keep civil time more accurately than ordinary mechanical watches, but neither movement type automatically tracks the Moon or identifies stars. For that, look for a named feature such as a moon-phase display, star chart or sidereal-time indication. Movement describes how a watch keeps time; its complications determine what celestial information it shows.
Which is more accurate: mechanical or quartz?
For ordinary timekeeping, quartz generally has the edge. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) describes quartz variation as below one second per day and variation for commonly used mechanical oscillation frequencies as below ten seconds per day. The Japan Clock & Watch Association (JCWA) gives a typical general-quartz figure of ±20 seconds per month, while noting that mechanical watches can vary from several seconds to several tens of seconds per day.

These are broad reference figures, not performance guarantees for every watch. JCWA says its guidance applies to member products, and a mechanical watch’s performance on the wrist may differ from catalogue conditions. The two organizations report figures at different scales, so they should be read as general guidance rather than a direct model-by-model test. FH’s overview of watchmaking and JCWA’s accuracy guidance provide the underlying context.
Why mechanical rates vary
A mechanical movement relies on a balance assembly and can be affected by winding state, position, temperature, shock and magnetism. Its rate may therefore change with how the watch is worn and handled, not just with its stated movement specification. See JCWA’s explanation of accuracy factors and COSC’s chronometer certification information.

What affects quartz accuracy
Quartz is not immune to environmental effects: the oscillator is affected by temperature. JCWA says quartz is less affected by shock and position than a mechanical balance assembly. Analogue quartz watches can still be affected by magnetism, so quartz should be understood as generally more accurate for everyday timekeeping, not perfectly stable in every condition. JCWA’s accuracy guidance discusses these distinctions.
Does movement type tell you whether a watch tracks the Moon or stars?
No. Mechanical and quartz describe the timekeeping movement, not the astronomical information a watch displays. Either category must be assessed by its actual functions and specification; the available sources do not establish a model-by-model comparison of celestial features across the two movement types.

A watch can keep excellent time without showing any astronomical information. Conversely, a celestial indication is a separate complication that can be fitted to a particular watch. Check the product specification for the named display you want rather than inferring it from “mechanical” or “quartz.”
What a moon-phase display shows—and what it does not
A moon-phase indication shows the lunar phase as seen from Earth. It is useful if you want a wrist display of the Moon’s cycle, but the indication alone does not establish star positions, local Moon rise and set times, or a complete map of the sky. Audemars Piguet explains the function in its moon-phase overview.

- For a touch of modern elegance and functionality, the women’s Calendrier not only tracks the phases of the moon, but also displays the time, month, day, and date.
- The mother-of-pearl dial in a beautiful blue hue is inset with diamond accents and has reflective qualities.
- Due to the iridescent properties of mother-of-pearl, no two dials are alike in color and tone, creating a unique look.
- Along with a versatile 37mm silver-tone stainless steel case and bracelet, it runs on Eco-Drive technology, meaning it’s sustainably powered by any light and never needs a battery
- Blending elevated style and advanced features into one elegant timepiece.
If your goal is simply to follow the lunar phase, look specifically for a moon-phase complication. Do not treat that feature as a star chart or a substitute for one.
What to look for if you want to find stars
For observing the night sky, seek an explicit star chart, sky chart or sidereal-time display. These are specialist celestial complications, not inherent benefits of either movement category. A star chart can represent the sky; sidereal time relates to the apparent rotation of the stars and is distinct from ordinary civil time.

Jaeger-LeCoultre describes celestial complications as representing astronomical cycles such as Moon phases or the sidereal day in its celestial-complication explanation. IWC’s bespoke Portugieser Sidérale Scafusia illustrates how specialized such a watch can be: the company describes a star chart together with displays for the horizon, sidereal time, sunrise, sunset and twilight, with a location basis. Those capabilities should not be assumed for ordinary watches. See IWC’s description of the watch.

- Everyday accuracy first: Quartz is generally the stronger choice for keeping civil time close, based on the broad reference figures above.
- Moon phase on the dial: Choose by the presence of an explicit moon-phase indication, not by movement type.
- Star positions or sky orientation: Confirm that the specification names a star chart or equivalent sky display, and check whether it is configured for a particular location.
- Sidereal time: Look for that exact function; a conventional time display or moon-phase indicator does not establish that the watch provides it.
These functions answer different needs. A more accurate civil-time display may help with general timekeeping, but it does not itself provide the astronomical information needed to identify stars or orient a sky chart.
