These three watch complications track different things: a moon-phase display shows the Moon’s changing appearance, sidereal time tracks Earth’s rotation relative to the stars, and the equation of time shows the difference between apparent solar time and mean clock time. They are not interchangeable ways to display ordinary time.
How the three complications differ
| Complication | What it tracks | What the display tells you | Common presentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moon phase | The lunar cycle as seen from Earth | The Moon’s phase, such as new, waxing, full, or waning | A disc behind an aperture, a hand with phase symbols, or a three-dimensional Moon |
| Sidereal time | Earth’s rotation relative to the stars | A stellar time reference, not a second time zone or ordinary civil time | A dedicated dial or subdial |
| Equation of time | The difference between apparent solar time and mean time | How far sundial time is ahead of or behind the time kept by an ordinary clock | A difference indicator or separate mean-solar and true-solar minute hands |
The key distinction is the reference frame: the Moon, the stars, or the Sun compared with uniform clock time.

What a moon-phase display shows
A moon-phase complication indicates the Moon’s visible phase through its cycle. Many mechanical watches use a rotating disc carrying two Moon images; the disc advances behind a dial aperture so the visible portion changes over time. Other designs use a hand and symbols or a three-dimensional sphere with contrasting light and dark halves. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie describes these approaches in its moon-phase explanation.

Moon phase describes appearance. Moon age is a related but distinct indication: the elapsed number of days since the most recent new moon. A watch showing phase does not necessarily display moon age or provide a complete lunar calendar.

Why the mechanism has to account for a long cycle
The interval between corresponding lunar phases—the synodic month—is 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.8 seconds, or 29.5305881 days, according to the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie. Because that cycle does not align neatly with a watch’s usual 60-minute, 12-hour, or 24-hour cycles, a mechanical moon-phase display uses a reduction train to advance at the required rate.
What sidereal time means on a watch
Sidereal time measures Earth’s rotation against the stars, rather than against the Sun’s apparent daily position. A sidereal day is approximately 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.091 seconds in mean solar time, about 3 minutes and 55.9 seconds shorter than a 24-hour mean solar day. Jaeger-LeCoultre gives this value in its discussion of celestial complications.

The difference exists because Earth moves along its orbit as it rotates. After one rotation relative to distant stars, Earth must turn a little farther for the Sun to return to the same meridian. Sidereal time therefore serves as a stellar reference; it is not a second time zone or a replacement for local civil time.

What the equation of time tells you
The equation of time is apparent solar time minus mean solar time, as defined by the United States Naval Observatory. In practical terms, it expresses the changing difference between what a sundial would indicate and what a clock keeping uniform mean time indicates.

- For a touch of modern elegance and functionality, the women’s Calendrier not only tracks the phases of the moon, but also displays the time, month, day, and date.
- The mother-of-pearl dial in a beautiful blue hue is inset with diamond accents and has reflective qualities.
- Due to the iridescent properties of mother-of-pearl, no two dials are alike in color and tone, creating a unique look.
- Along with a versatile 37mm silver-tone stainless steel case and bracelet, it runs on Eco-Drive technology, meaning it’s sustainably powered by any light and never needs a battery
- Blending elevated style and advanced features into one elegant timepiece.
Some watches show the size and direction of this difference directly. Others make the comparison visible with separate hands for mean solar time and true solar time. Audemars Piguet describes the complication as displaying the difference between mean time and true solar time in its astronomy overview.
The sign and range depend on convention
Patek Philippe’s glossary gives a range of −16 to +14 minutes, depending on the day of the year. Blancpain describes a similar approximate spread in the reverse order, +16 to −14 minutes, and explains a running display with coaxial minute hands for mean solar time and true solar time. These are rounded ranges with different sign/order conventions; check how a particular watch defines and displays the difference before interpreting a positive or negative reading.

Which complication answers your question?
- Choose moon phase if you want to see the Moon’s phase at a glance. Check whether the watch indicates phase alone or also provides a separate moon-age reading.
- Choose sidereal time if the star-based reference itself interests you. Read the indication as a measure tied to Earth’s rotation against the stars, not as another location’s clock time.
- Choose equation of time if you want to compare apparent solar time with the uniform time used by clocks. Look at the model’s display convention to understand whether it uses a difference indicator, paired hands, or another arrangement.
For any of them, assess legibility, what information is actually shown, and how the indication is set. These are different astronomical functions; there is no standardized accuracy or price comparison across them established by the cited references.
What these indications do not tell you
- A moon-phase display does not, by itself, mean the watch shows moon age or a full lunar calendar.
- Sidereal time is not a second time zone.
- An equation-of-time indication is not a sunrise or sunset prediction unless the specific watch has separate indications for those events.
Watchmakers offer these functions in astronomical complications, but the cited references do not establish current stock, prices, or regional availability for specific models. For a named watch, verify its exact indications and setting procedure in the manufacturer’s current documentation; Patek Philippe, for example, publishes reference-specific celestial-complication setting instructions.
