Quartz watches are generally the more convenient choice for straightforward timekeeping; mechanical watches trade that convenience for a mainspring-powered mechanism that needs winding and periodic service. Neither category is uniformly more accurate or easier to maintain: compare the specific watch’s stated accuracy and care instructions before buying.
How quartz and mechanical watches keep time
Quartz: an electrically regulated movement
A quartz watch uses an electrical source to energize a quartz crystal. The crystal oscillates at a steady frequency, and the movement uses those oscillations to regulate time. Citizen gives 32,768 Hz as an ordinary quartz example, not a specification for every quartz movement. Citizen Watch Global Network’s explanation of watch movements describes the quartz and mechanical principles.

Mechanical: a spring, gears and balance
A mechanical watch stores energy in a wound mainspring. A gear train transfers that energy, while a balance regulates its release. Citizen gives 5–10 beats per second, or 2.5–5 Hz, as an example range for a mechanical balance; individual movements differ. Citizen’s comparison outlines the mechanism.

Which type is more accurate?
Quartz is usually the simpler choice if your priority is convenient timekeeping, but “quartz” and “mechanical” are broad categories, not accuracy ratings. Check the model’s stated tolerance and whether it is expressed per day, month or year. Citizen describes ordinary quartz accuracy on a monthly basis and mechanical accuracy on a daily basis; those different reporting periods are not, by themselves, a comparison of every movement.
For mechanical watches, Seiko calls the measure a “mean daily rate.” It says the rate depends on movement type and can change with how the watch is worn and its surroundings. Seiko advises assessing an average over a week or ten days of actual wear rather than relying on a single day’s reading. Seiko’s mechanical-watch accuracy guidance explains the measure and influencing conditions.

- Winding: A mechanical movement’s rate can vary with the mainspring’s state of wind.
- Temperature and position: Changes in surroundings and the watch’s position can affect mechanical timekeeping.
- Shock and magnetism: Both can affect a mechanical watch’s rate; magnetism may persist after exposure.
Strong magnetic force can also affect the motor in an analog quartz watch. Seiko says digital quartz watches are generally unaffected by magnetism because they have no motor. Seiko’s magnetism guidance distinguishes these cases.

| Question | Quartz | Mechanical |
|---|---|---|
| What powers it? | An electrical source; the arrangement depends on the watch. | A wound mainspring. |
| Does it need a battery? | Some quartz watches use non-rechargeable cells; other designs may use rechargeable power. Follow the model’s instructions. | No battery. An automatic winds through wrist movement; a hand-wound watch is wound by its wearer. |
| What happens if it is left unused? | Behavior depends on its power system and remaining charge. | It can stop when its stored spring energy runs out. |
| Routine upkeep to expect | A non-rechargeable cell eventually needs replacement. | Periodic examination and service; the maker’s schedule applies. |
Do not assume every quartz watch takes a replaceable battery: solar and rechargeable systems have different care requirements. Citizen advises that a non-rechargeable cell be replaced by a jeweler or authorized Citizen service center, and notes that a factory-installed cell may be depleted by the time a watch is purchased. That guidance is specific to the battery context described by Citizen. Citizen’s cell replacement instructions provide the details.

Maintenance, service and water resistance
Mechanical service intervals are maker guidance, not a universal rule
Seiko gives about three years as a general service recommendation for its watches, subject to climate and individual use. Citizen’s cited overhaul guidance recommends disassembly and cleaning every 2–3 years in its movement/service context. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a single interval that applies to every make and model. Worn parts and aged oil can lead to timekeeping problems or a stopped watch; Citizen also cautions that some long-term degradation may not be fully reversible through repair.
Use the watch maker’s instructions for the particular model and ask an authorized service provider when the schedule or service scope is unclear. See Seiko’s explanation of its general service recommendation and Citizen’s mechanical-watch overhaul guidance.

Quartz upkeep depends on its power system
A quartz watch using a non-rechargeable cell needs cell replacement, but there is no universal replacement interval established here. Follow the watch’s instructions rather than waiting for a generic number of years. Rechargeable or solar watches should be cared for according to their own maker guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWater resistance needs care too
Water resistance can deteriorate as gaskets age or after a shock. Have checks and service performed according to the manufacturer’s instructions; a water-resistance rating should not be treated as permanent protection regardless of age or condition. Seiko’s care and maintenance guidance addresses service and upkeep.
Quick Recap
How to choose before you buy
- Choose quartz if you want convenient timekeeping and prefer not to wind a watch or follow mechanical-service routines. Verify its actual accuracy specification and whether its power system uses a replaceable cell.
- Choose mechanical if you value a spring-driven mechanism and are comfortable with winding or wearing an automatic regularly, plus periodic service.
- For either type, compare the exact model’s accuracy tolerance, power source, care instructions and water-resistance guidance. Do not infer accuracy, durability, prestige, value or enjoyment from the movement category alone.
