When trying on a watch, check more than its diameter: assess how its size and thickness look and feel on your wrist, whether the weight and bracelet or strap are comfortable, and whether the dial is easy to read in the light you’ll actually encounter. Compare candidates side by side, move your wrist naturally, and ask the retailer to adjust the fit before you decide.
How should a watch look on your wrist?
Look at the watch from above and from the side. Consider whether the case and dial feel visually balanced to you, whether the lugs sit comfortably, and whether the case thickness catches on a sleeve or presses against your wrist when you bend it. Diameter alone cannot predict how a watch will look or wear: shape, lug outline, thickness, bracelet or strap, and personal preference all matter.

Does it feel comfortable when you move?
Notice the watch’s weight and whether the case, crown, or bracelet creates a pressure point. Flex and rotate your wrist as you normally would, and check whether the watch shifts or feels restrictive. A watch can look right in a mirror yet feel awkward in motion, so give it a moment on your wrist rather than judging it from a quick glance.
Rolex identifies weight, bracelet feel, wrist fit, and dial colors in natural light as details a shopper can appreciate by trying a watch in person. That is the brand’s purchase guidance, not an independent fit study; the practical point is to judge the specific watch on your own wrist rather than relying on photos.

Can you read the dial in the light around you?
Check the dial in the store’s available light and, if practical, near natural light. See whether you can read the time quickly and whether the color, contrast, and reflections appeal to you. A dial that looks vivid in a product image may appear different in person, so compare watches under the same lighting when possible.

How should the bracelet or strap fit?
A bracelet or strap should feel secure without uncomfortable pinching or pressure. With a bracelet, ask whether links can be added or removed and whether the clasp offers a useful adjustment. With a strap, check how the material feels and whether the buckle positions give you a comfortable fit.

Longines’ bracelet sizing tool recommends leaving room for an index finger when measuring for a bracelet. That can serve as a starting point, but the actual watch on your wrist is the better check.
Adjustment options depend on the specific watch and seller. Rolex says its Official Jewelers can add or remove metal links and adjust a bracelet or strap. Citizen’s U.S. support guidance says bracelet lengths vary by model, that some watches may include up to three additional links for larger wrists, and that its current strap options do not extend beyond their stated ranges. Ask about the exact model in front of you rather than assuming every band can be adjusted in the same way.

How to compare two watches in store
If you have more than one candidate, compare them under the same conditions. Put each on the same wrist and use the same checks so that lighting or a different fit does not skew your impression.
- Visual balance: Compare how the case, dial, and lugs look from above, then check thickness from the side.
- Comfort: Notice weight, pressure points, and how each watch feels as you flex and rotate your wrist.
- Dial: Check color, reflections, and quick readability in the same light.
- Band: Compare how the bracelet or strap feels and whether the available adjustments can give you a comfortable fit.
What to ask before leaving the store
Ask the retailer to make the fit comfortable and demonstrate any clasp adjustment. Also ask what they will check before handover. Rolex says an Official Rolex Jeweler prepares the watch, winds and sets it, checks its functions, verifies crown tightness, and can size the bracelet before the customer leaves. That describes Rolex’s own Official Jeweler process; it is not a guarantee that every retailer provides the same service.
