A mechanical watch keeps time by releasing stored energy from a mainspring through gears in controlled increments. The escapement meters that energy, and the balance wheel with its hairspring regulates the pace. Manual watches are wound at the crown; automatic watches use wrist motion to turn a rotor and wind the mainspring.

How a mechanical watch works

A mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring and uses a gear train, escapement, and balance wheel to keep time. It does not use a battery-powered quartz movement. Turning the crown winds a manual watch; in an automatic watch, wrist motion turns a rotor that winds the spring.

The essential sequence is:

  1. Winding stores energy in the mainspring.
  2. The barrel and gear train transmit that energy and establish different rotational speeds.
  3. The escapement releases energy in regular increments.
  4. The balance wheel and hairspring regulate the rate of those increments.
  5. The display uses the resulting motion to move the hands.

“Mechanical” describes the timekeeping technology, not one particular winding method. Both manual-wind and automatic watches are mechanical watches.

The main parts of a mechanical movement

A basic mechanical movement can be understood through six functional units: winding mechanism, barrel, wheel train, escapement, regulator, and display. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie’s overview of mechanical watch construction describes a basic movement as having roughly 130-some parts. Part counts vary with movement design and counting conventions.

1. Crown and winding mechanism

The crown is the small control on the side of the case. On a manual-winding watch, turning it winds the mainspring through the winding mechanism. Pulling the crown can connect it to the hand-setting mechanism; additional crown positions and functions depend on the watch.

An automatic watch uses a rotor moved by the wearer’s wrist to wind the mainspring. The crown is still used for setting the hands, and some automatic movements also permit hand-winding. Follow the specific watch’s instructions.

2. Mainspring and barrel

The mainspring is a coiled spring inside a barrel. Winding stores energy in the spring. As it unwinds, it turns the barrel and supplies power to the gear train.

A watch’s power reserve is how long it can run after being wound before it stops. The reserve varies by movement, so check the specification for the exact watch. Hamilton, for example, uses an 80-hour hand-wound movement as an explanatory example; that figure is not a specification for mechanical watches as a category.

3. Automatic rotor

An automatic watch adds an oscillating weight called a rotor. Wrist motion turns the rotor, and the winding mechanism transfers that motion to the mainspring. Automatic winding is motion-assisted winding, not a separate, unlimited power source.

An automatic watch still has a finite power reserve. It can stop if left unworn longer than that reserve. The rotor and winding system vary by movement.

4. Gear train

The wheel train carries power from the barrel toward the escapement. Interlocking wheels and pinions transmit power and rotate at different speeds. The train also carries motion to the hands, displaying hours, minutes, and, when fitted, seconds.

Additional mechanisms, such as a calendar or chronograph, add functions to the basic movement. Their components and energy needs depend on the design.

5. Escapement

The escapement connects the gear train to the regulator and breaks the mainspring’s power into regular increments. In a commonly used lever arrangement, the escape wheel interacts with a pallet fork. The fork alternately locks and releases the escape wheel while giving impulses to the balance wheel. This action produces the characteristic mechanical ticking.

6. Balance wheel and hairspring

The balance wheel oscillates back and forth, while its hairspring provides the restoring force. The escapement gives the balance repeated impulses; the balance’s oscillation determines the rate at which the escape wheel advances.

The balance assembly is broadly analogous to a clock’s pendulum, but designed to fit inside a watch. If the movement’s rate varies, the hands gain or lose time accordingly. Friction, wear, and adjustment are among the challenges affecting precision, as the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie explains.

7. Display

The train carries regulated motion to the hands, displaying hours and minutes and, when fitted, seconds. A display back lets the wearer see parts of the movement, but does not by itself establish accuracy or quality.

Manual-wind versus automatic mechanical watches

Type How it receives energy What happens when unworn
Manual-winding The wearer turns the crown to wind the mainspring. It runs until its power reserve is exhausted unless wound again.
Automatic A rotor turns with wrist motion and winds the mainspring. It may keep winding while worn, but can stop after its reserve runs down.

Manual and automatic describe winding approaches within the mechanical category. Both use the same basic chain of mainspring, gear train, escapement, and regulator. Compare the power reserve specified for each particular movement rather than assuming all watches of one type share a reserve.

Why a mechanical watch ticks

The escapement releases the gear train’s energy in regular increments. Its interaction with the balance regulates how the train advances and produces the ticking sound. The exact beat rate depends on the movement.

Mechanical versus quartz watches

Feature Mechanical watch Quartz watch
Energy and timing A wound mainspring powers a gear train; an escapement and balance regulate it. A battery-powered electronic system uses a quartz oscillator.
Winding or power Manual watches are wound at the crown; automatic watches use a rotor. Both have a finite reserve. Typically runs on battery power until the battery needs replacement.
What to compare Movement-specific reserve, accuracy information, care, and service guidance. Movement-specific specifications and battery requirements.

Mechanical watches are valued for their physical mechanism and traditional construction, while quartz uses a different, battery-powered electronic approach. Neither label alone tells you how a particular watch will perform; compare the maker’s specifications and guidance for the individual model.

The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie reports a −4/+6 seconds-per-day criterion for a COSC-certified mechanical movement. This is a certification benchmark, not the expected accuracy of every mechanical watch.

Accuracy, care, and maintenance

Mechanical timekeeping can be affected by movement condition and the environment. Seiko lists mainspring condition, temperature, watch position, shock, and proximity to magnetic products as factors that can affect accuracy. The effects and appropriate precautions are model-specific; follow the maker’s guidance.

Friction and wear can cause power loss in the train. Seiko’s India support page recommends an overhaul once in three years, but this is Seiko’s guidance, not a universal service interval. Consult the instructions for your watch or an appropriate watch service professional for model-specific advice.

Buying checklist for a first mechanical watch

  • Choose the winding approach: decide whether you prefer crown winding or an automatic rotor.
  • Check the exact power reserve: compare the stated figure for each movement.
  • Review accuracy information: look for model-specific claims or certification, and distinguish a COSC benchmark from a general claim about mechanical watches.
  • Consider care and service: read the maker’s instructions for the specific watch, including guidance on shock, magnetism, and maintenance.

When comparing a mechanical watch, focus on its actual movement, reserve, accuracy information, and manufacturer guidance rather than relying on the category label alone.
