Meta Ray-Ban Display pairs a small, full-color screen in the right lens with a wristband that reads muscle signals to control it. The glasses launched in the U.S. for $799, including the Meta Neural Band. They can show messages, captions, directions and other glanceable information, but they are not the full-field holographic AR glasses Meta has shown as Project Orion.

What Meta announced

Meta announced Meta Ray-Ban Display at Connect on September 17, 2025, in partnership with eyewear company EssilorLuxottica. The glasses combine a camera, speakers, microphones and Meta AI features with a visual display; the included Meta Neural Band provides gesture input. Meta positioned them as “display AI glasses,” distinct from camera-equipped glasses without screens and from future augmented-reality glasses. Meta’s announcement describes the launch and intended features.

What appears in the lens

The display is a 600 × 600-pixel, full-color monocular screen with a 20-degree field of view, integrated into the right lens, according to Ray-Ban’s product specifications. It is designed for short glances rather than continuous viewing or replacing a phone screen.

  • Messages and multimedia from WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and a connected phone.
  • Visual answers from Meta AI and step-by-step how-to information.
  • Camera previews, zoom, and selected photos or videos.
  • Pedestrian turn-by-turn directions, which Meta described as a beta feature for select cities.
  • Live captions and real-time translation for supported languages and use cases.
  • Music information, album art, visual imagery and book covers.

Access to these features can depend on phone pairing, internet access, account, location, app and software availability. A screen visible only to the wearer does not make the glasses as a whole private: they still have a camera, microphones, connected apps and cloud-based services.

How the Neural Band controls the glasses

Despite its name, the Meta Neural Band is not a brain-reading device. It uses surface electromyography (EMG) to sense electrical signals associated with muscle activity in the wrist and hand, then maps those signals to commands. Meta says it can detect signals before movements are visually obvious; that is the company’s description, not an independently established accuracy result. Meta also says its related research involved nearly 200,000 participants. Meta’s launch account describes the band and its controls.

  • Swipe with the thumb to move through interfaces.
  • Pinch to select or activate.
  • Use clicking-like gestures for commands.
  • Rotate the wrist to adjust volume.

The band adds a touch-free input option when voice is inconvenient or hands are occupied, but it does not remove the need for voice, touch, a phone or compatible apps. Fit and wrist placement may affect recognition; users should keep other control methods available. Meta presents EMG as potentially useful for people with limited movement, tremors, spinal-cord injuries or fewer than five fingers, but that rationale is not a clinical finding or guarantee of suitability.

Specifications are from Ray-Ban and Meta. The battery figures are not identical: Meta’s announcement gives up to 30 hours with the case, while Ray-Ban’s product page lists up to 24 hours. The published material does not establish whether that difference reflects test conditions, revisions or different definitions of total use, so treat both as manufacturer figures rather than a guaranteed runtime. The glasses and band have separate batteries.

Is it augmented reality—or Orion?

In a broad sense, the glasses put digital information in front of the wearer. But the 20-degree monocular screen is better understood as a glanceable heads-up display than a full-scene spatial overlay. It is not a full-lens display or a virtual monitor, and the available specifications do not establish spatially anchored holograms.

Product Display and controls Status
Meta Ray-Ban Display Small monocular color display; Neural Band, touch and voice Consumer product
Ray-Ban Meta No integrated visual display; touch and voice Displayless AI glasses
Meta Orion Full AR-style holographic display and eye tracking Prototype, not the same retail product

Meta’s product categories and the distinction between the consumer glasses and Orion are covered in Meta’s announcement; TechCrunch’s launch coverage also contrasts the smaller consumer display with Orion. Calling Ray-Ban Display “AR glasses” without explaining the limited monocular screen risks suggesting capabilities it does not have.

Price, availability and fit

Meta set the U.S. launch price at $799 for the glasses and Neural Band together, with U.S. retail availability beginning September 30, 2025. Initial retailers named by Meta included Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut and Ray-Ban Stores, with select Verizon stores to follow. Meta said expansion to Canada, France, Italy and the U.K. was planned for early 2026; that announcement alone does not confirm present-day availability in each country. Check the relevant local product page or retailer for current stock, pricing, prescription options and returns. Best Buy announced Meta Lab experiences in more than 50 U.S. stores during summer 2026, including hands-on demonstrations.

Fit is unusually consequential for eyewear with a display: frame comfort, lens position and alignment affect whether the small screen is usable. Ray-Ban lists two frame sizes and three Neural Band sizes; the announced configuration uses Transitions Gen8 lenses. Confirm prescription compatibility and limits locally rather than assuming all prescriptions are supported. At the listed 68–70 g, the glasses are a substantial load compared with ordinary eyewear, and the case weighs 169 g. Trying them on and checking screen alignment is more informative than judging from a specification sheet.

What to weigh before buying

Reasons the display may be worth paying for

  • You often need quick visual checks—messages, directions, captions, translations or AI answers—without taking out a phone.
  • You specifically want a wearable screen and are comfortable with the Meta app and connected-device ecosystem.
  • A wrist gesture could be more convenient than voice in some situations; captions or translation may also fit a particular communication need.
  • You can try the frame and band in person and confirm comfort, screen alignment and sizing.

Reasons to wait or choose displayless glasses

  • The $799 bundle is hard to justify if you mainly want camera capture, open-ear audio or voice AI. Displayless Ray-Ban Meta glasses may suit those needs without the screen premium; see Meta’s smart-glasses page.
  • You expect full-field AR, a large virtual screen or Orion-like holograms; this product does not provide that experience.
  • You need all-day use without charging, want lightweight ordinary prescription eyewear, or are uncomfortable carrying cameras and microphones.
  • You do not want to manage a second wearable, its fit and charging, or features that may rely on a phone, internet connection and changing app support.
  • You need prescription lenses or country-specific features whose availability and total cost have not been confirmed for your situation.

Oakley Meta is another displayless option for shoppers who prefer sportier styling and want camera, audio and AI features rather than the Ray-Ban Display screen; its configuration and Neural Band bundle should not be assumed to match. See Meta’s Oakley Meta page for current details.

Bottom line

Meta Ray-Ban Display is most compelling for early adopters who have a clear use for glanceable visual information or gesture input and can verify the fit in person. It is a real consumer product, but its screen is small and monocular, battery claims vary by source, and the experience remains connected to phones, services and the Meta ecosystem. If you want full AR—or only need a camera, audio and voice assistant—the display is unlikely to justify the premium.
