Oakley Meta is the technical winner, but Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is the better choice for most people. Oakley offers stronger outdoor protection, sport-focused designs and, in the Vanguard model, the highest battery rating. Ray-Ban remains more comfortable to wear casually, looks more like conventional eyewear and starts at a lower price.
This comparison separates the current models that buyers are most likely to mean: Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, Oakley Meta HSTN and Oakley Meta Vanguard. They share Meta’s camera, open-ear audio and AI platform, but they are not interchangeable products.

For a fair everyday comparison, Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 should be compared with Oakley Meta HSTN. Vanguard is a different proposition: it is designed to survive and assist during demanding outdoor activity, not to look like ordinary sunglasses in an office.
Which models are actually being compared?
“Meta Ray-Bans” can refer to older Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Gen 2, or prescription-oriented optical frames. That matters because the older generation is listed for up to four hours of moderate use, while Gen 2 is listed for up to eight. This article uses Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 unless stated otherwise.

Prices depend heavily on frame and lens selection. Meta’s lineup overview lists Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 from $379 and Oakley HSTN from $399, while listed US Oakley configurations show HSTN at $479 and Vanguard at $499. What both pairs can do
Both lines are camera-and-audio smart glasses, not augmented-reality glasses with a display. They do not project directions, messages or AI answers into your field of view. Responses are primarily heard through the speakers or viewed in the companion app.
Both require a supported Android or iPhone, Bluetooth, wireless internet access, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. The app handles setup, media transfer, device management, AI interaction and firmware updates. Many features also depend on regional availability, language support and an internet connection.
The shared feature set includes voice-activated Meta AI, camera-assisted questions about surroundings, calls and messaging through a connected phone, music controls and hands-free photo and video capture. The underlying platform is similar, but that does not prove identical image processing, microphone tuning or feature availability between models.

Current Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 and Oakley Meta materials specify a 12-megapixel camera and 3K video capture. That makes the specifications look similar, but megapixels do not determine the whole shooting experience.
The practical advantage of either pair is perspective: you can capture a moment without taking out a phone. That is particularly useful while walking, travelling, cooking, cycling or handling equipment. The camera is less useful when you need optical zoom, precise composition, distant subjects or a long uninterrupted recording.
A meaningful comparison should assess default video separately from 3K mode. Higher resolution can increase transfer demands and reduce recording endurance. Important differences to look for include framing, exposure, colour, stabilization, detail in low light, motion handling and wind noise. The camera’s position also affects how closely the footage resembles what the wearer actually sees.
Neither model replaces a phone camera. Both have small sensors, limited framing control and battery constraints. The privacy indicator is visible, but it can be difficult to notice in bright daylight, so the wearer still has a responsibility to announce recording where appropriate.

Battery: Oakley wins, but model choice matters

On official figures, Vanguard has the endurance advantage. HSTN and Ray-Ban Gen 2 are effectively tied in their headline typical-use rating, so “Oakley has better battery life” is only clearly true when Vanguard is the comparison.
These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed full-day runtimes. Camera use, 3K recording, AI questions, calls, media transfers, temperature, Bluetooth conditions and continuous audio can all reduce battery life. A camera-heavy day should not be judged against the same expectation as occasional photos and short music sessions.
Charging is case-based. Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is listed at approximately 75 minutes for a full charge and about 22 minutes to reach 50%. Oakley HSTN is listed at about 80% in 45 minutes, while Vanguard is listed at approximately 75 minutes for a full charge. The cases charge over USB-C; some Oakley listings state that the cable is not included.
Durability and outdoor use
This is Oakley’s clearest hardware advantage. Oakley Meta HSTN is listed with IPX4 water resistance. Vanguard is listed with IP67 dust and water resistance, making it the model intended for more demanding outdoor conditions.
IP ratings are not a promise that the glasses are indestructible, safe for swimming or immune to every form of water exposure. They are protection classifications, not permission to use electronics underwater.
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 should be evaluated using the rating for the exact generation and frame. It should not be treated as equivalent to Vanguard’s IP67 protection. For commuting and ordinary casual wear, Ray-Ban’s protection may be sufficient; for exposed cycling, trail running, skiing or hard training, Vanguard is the safer product choice.
Comfort, fit and appearance
Ray-Ban wins the lifestyle contest. Wayfarer, Skyler, Headliner and optical-style frames look recognizably like regular Ray-Bans, so they are easier to wear at work, while travelling or with everyday clothing. That makes the camera and controls feel less conspicuous, although they are never invisible.
Oakley HSTN is the compromise: sportier, but still usable as an everyday frame. Vanguard is purpose-built. Its wraparound shape can stay secure during movement and provide better coverage, but it is less appropriate for formal clothing, office wear or buyers who dislike visibly athletic eyewear. It may also be a poor fit for smaller faces or for use with some helmets, hats and protective equipment.

Fit is personal. Check frame dimensions and assess nose pressure, temple pressure, balance and movement after one hour, three hours and a full day. A technically superior pair that stays in its case because it looks or feels wrong is not a better purchase.
Audio, calls and microphones
Both product families use open-ear speakers. That preserves awareness of traffic and surroundings, but it also means audio can leak in a quiet office, train or waiting room, especially at higher volume. These are not private headphones.
Compare speech intelligibility indoors and outdoors, wind handling while walking or cycling, useful volume in traffic, sound leakage and the other caller’s view of microphone quality. Oakley specifically emphasizes microphone-array performance and wind-noise handling for sports conditions, while Ray-Ban emphasizes open-ear audio and immersive audio recording. Those are manufacturer positions; real performance depends on wind, fit, phone connection and software.
Meta AI and privacy
Meta AI can answer voice questions and, where supported, use the camera to identify or discuss objects, plants, landmarks, text and surroundings. The glasses can also control media and assist with calls and messages through the connected phone.

Setup, many commands and media workflows rely on the phone, Meta account, app and network. Features can also vary by country, language, device and software rollout.
Privacy requires more than checking whether a recording light exists. Recording activates a visible capture LED, but the light may be hard to see in bright conditions. Oakley says newer models can use the camera for some AI functions without activating the external capture LED, while retaining privacy protections; this behaviour differs from older Ray-Ban Meta models and should be checked for the exact device and current software.
Do not use either pair for covert recording. Respect consent, local law and venue rules: some workplaces, concerts, schools, museums and other locations prohibit cameras regardless of how ordinary the glasses look. Also review Meta’s handling of account data, voice recordings, photos and AI processing before enabling features.

Vanguard is the only model here with a clear sports-ecosystem rationale. Oakley identifies Garmin and Strava integrations for activities such as running and cycling. Their value is greatest if you already use compatible Garmin hardware or Strava workflows. Garmin equipment may be sold separately, and the features can require a phone, apps and accounts.

This is useful hands-free access to an existing sports ecosystem, not a reason for every casual buyer to purchase Vanguard. If you only walk, commute or occasionally record a workout, you may be paying for protection and integrations you will not use.
Prescription lenses and lens choices
Ray-Ban states that its Meta glasses are prescription-lens compatible, and the Ray-Ban optical-oriented models are the more natural starting point for someone who wears glasses all day. Oakley offers prescription options on selected configurations, with availability depending on model and region.
Available lens choices can include clear, standard, polarized, Transitions and Oakley Prizm options. Prescription, polarized, photochromic and performance lenses can substantially increase the final price. Confirm whether the lenses are included, ordered as an upgrade or supplied through an approved optical channel. Third-party relensing may affect warranty or safety, so check the manufacturer’s terms before proceeding.
Which one should you buy?
Choose Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 if:
- You want smart glasses that resemble ordinary sunglasses.
- You value casual photography, calls, music and AI more than rugged sports protection.
- You want the lower listed entry price.
- You need broad fashion or optical styling.
- You are comfortable with an up-to-eight-hour manufacturer battery claim and normal mixed use.
Choose Oakley Meta HSTN if:
- You want a sportier everyday frame without Vanguard’s full wraparound look.
- You spend more time outdoors and want IPX4-rated water resistance.
- You prefer Oakley styling and performance-oriented lenses.
- You want better active-use positioning without necessarily needing sports integrations.
Choose Oakley Meta Vanguard if:
- You run, cycle, ski or train outdoors at high intensity.
- You need the strongest listed protection, including IP67 dust and water resistance.
- You value the highest official battery rating in this comparison.
- You already use Garmin or Strava and will use the related features.
- You are comfortable with a conspicuous wraparound sports design.
Choose neither if:
You do not want a camera on your eyewear, cannot use a supported phone or Meta account, or require truly private audio. Conventional sunglasses plus separate audio hardware may be a better fit.

Setup and pairing
For Ray-Ban Meta, the current support process is:
- Remove the protective tab from the charging case and place the glasses inside.
- Install and open the Meta AI app, then sign in with a Meta account.
- Enable Bluetooth and switch on the glasses.
- If pairing does not begin, fold both arms and hold the capture button for about 12 seconds until the internal LED flashes blue.
- Complete setup in the app and install available updates.
The Ray-Ban support path for updates is Settings > Your glasses > Glasses update. App labels can change, so treat this as the current documented path rather than a permanent interface guarantee. Oakley uses the same general phone, account and Meta AI app ecosystem; follow the model-specific instructions supplied with the glasses.
How to compare them fairly
Do not compare a fashion Ray-Ban frame with Vanguard and call every difference a product win. Use the same phone, software state and lens category where possible. Record equal numbers and lengths of clips, play the same playlist at the same volume, make equivalent calls, ask the same AI questions and include both mixed-use and camera-heavy sessions.
A sensible weighting is comfort and appearance 20%, battery 20%, camera 15%, audio and calls 15%, durability 10%, AI and app experience 10%, lens and prescription options 5% and price/value 5%. Change those weights for your life. Someone cycling daily should give durability and fit more importance; someone wearing the glasses at work should give appearance and comfort more importance.
