Meta did price its rumored “Hypernova” glasses below the earlier $1,000-plus expectations. The product launched in the United States on September 30, 2025, as Meta Ray-Ban Display, with a starting price of $799.
That made it roughly 20% cheaper than a reported $1,000 baseline, but not inexpensive. These are premium smart glasses with a small, monocular display and a neural wristband—not the full holographic AR glasses Meta has shown in its Orion prototype.

From “Hypernova” to Meta Ray-Ban Display
“Hypernova” was reportedly Meta’s internal codename for its first commercially sold glasses with an integrated display. It was never the public product name. Meta ultimately introduced the device as Meta Ray-Ban Display.

Early reporting put the expected price at more than $1,000, while some speculation reached approximately $1,400. Later reports suggested a starting price near $800. Meta’s final U.S. price was $799.

The pricing story is therefore accurate only with an important qualification: the glasses were cheaper than the earlier reported expectations, not cheap in absolute terms. The $1,000 and $1,400 figures were reported expectations rather than prices Meta had formally announced.

What buyers get for $799
Meta Ray-Ban Display combines the basic concept of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses with a visual display and a new input method. The package includes:
- A full-color display built into the glasses, positioned in the user’s view through the right lens.
- Meta AI features.
- Text-message handling.
- Turn-by-turn directions.
- Live translation.
- A camera viewfinder.
- Music and notification controls.
- Camera, speakers and microphones similar to the non-display Ray-Ban Meta concept.
- A Meta Neural Band wristband for gesture control.
The Neural Band reads subtle hand movements using electromyographic, or EMG, signals. That allows users to interact with the glasses through gestures rather than relying only on voice commands, touch controls or a phone.
The display and wristband are the main reasons for the premium. The device is not simply a more expensive version of the same voice-assistant glasses.

Why this is not the full AR future
Calling Meta Ray-Ban Display “AR glasses” without qualification can create the wrong expectations. The glasses provide glanceable visual information, but they are not equivalent to a full field-of-view augmented-reality headset.
They are not:
- Meta’s Orion prototype.
- A binocular display covering both lenses.
- A six-degrees-of-freedom holographic system with spatially anchored 3D objects.
- A replacement for a mixed-reality headset such as Apple Vision Pro or Microsoft HoloLens.
- A phone-sized visual workspace.
The strongest description is display-equipped AI smart glasses or limited-display AR-style glasses. The small, monocular display is better suited to notifications, directions, translation and short prompts than to watching large virtual objects or running a conventional desktop-style interface.
Meta’s Orion glasses remain a prototype. At the time of the Ray-Ban Display launch, the Associated Press reported that Orion was still years away from commercial availability.

Meta’s lower-cost glasses range announced in June 2026 started at $299. A Ray-Ban Meta Scriber Optics Gen 2 model was listed at $499 on Ray-Ban’s U.S. site when crawled. These products do not include the display and Neural Band.

That makes the relevant comparison less about Meta versus Apple and more about whether the display and wristband justify a roughly $300–$500 step up from ordinary Meta glasses. Apple Vision Pro’s much higher price shows that Meta Ray-Ban Display is cheaper than a premium mixed-reality headset, but the two products serve fundamentally different purposes.

What “starting at $799” really means
The $799 figure is a U.S. starting price, not necessarily the final amount every buyer will pay. The total can rise with:
- Prescription lenses.
- Lens upgrades, including Transitions-style options where available.
- Different frame designs.
- Sales tax.
- Regional pricing, shipping or accessories.
Prescription compatibility can also vary by model, geography and individual prescription. Ray-Ban’s general prescription documentation for Meta smart glasses lists an approximate eligible range of -6.00 to +4.00 total power, but that document should not automatically be treated as confirmation of the exact limits for every Ray-Ban Display configuration.
Meta also says that some AI and voice features vary by country and language. Buyers should check the product page for local availability before treating every advertised feature as universally supported.

Practical limitations to consider
Limited display area
A small display can make directions, translations and notifications more convenient, but it cannot provide the broad visual workspace associated with a phone, monitor or headset. Its value depends on how often short, glanceable information is useful to you.
Monocular viewing
Because reporting describes the display as being in the right lens, the experience is different from binocular AR. It is not designed to place large 3D graphics across both eyes or make digital objects appear naturally anchored throughout a room.
Phone and account dependence
The glasses require a compatible Android or iOS phone, a Meta account, the Meta AI app and wireless internet access for core functions. They are therefore a hands-free companion device, not an entirely independent computer.
Controlled software
Earlier reporting said the glasses would use a customized Android-based system without ordinary Android apps or a conventional app store. That points to a tightly controlled feature set rather than the broad software ecosystem available on a phone.
Battery and connectivity demands
A display, camera, wireless connection and AI processing can place greater demands on battery life than ordinary audio-and-camera glasses. Exact endurance depends on usage, so buyers should not assume that display use will match the battery performance of a non-display model.

Privacy and social acceptance
The camera and always-available microphones create the same privacy questions associated with earlier Ray-Ban Meta glasses. People nearby may not know when recording or listening-related features are active, and local rules or social norms may restrict use in workplaces, schools or private settings.
Who should buy which model?
| Buyer | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Wants directions, translations and notifications in view | Meta Ray-Ban Display | The display is the central reason to pay more. |
| Primarily wants a camera, speakers, calls and AI | Non-display Meta glasses | They provide the core smart-glasses experience at a lower price. |
| Does not want to wear or charge a wristband | Non-display Meta glasses | The Neural Band is part of the Display interaction model. |
| Expects holographic AR or spatial 3D graphics | Wait | Ray-Ban Display is not Orion or a full AR headset. |
| Needs a large app ecosystem | Phone, tablet or headset | The glasses are built around a limited, controlled software experience. |
| Needs prescription lenses | Check compatibility first | Lens support varies by frame, prescription and market. |
What the launch says about Meta’s strategy
The $799 product creates a clear ladder in Meta’s glasses portfolio. Lower-priced models focus on cameras, speakers and AI. Ray-Ban Display adds visual information and gesture control at a premium. Orion represents the longer-term ambition for more capable AR, but remains a prototype rather than a product buyers can order.
The structure also helps explain why Meta did not price the display glasses at the same level as its ordinary models. The company is selling additional display, sensing and input hardware while keeping the product closer to a premium consumer wearable than to a professional AR headset.

That positioning may make the $799 price strategically important: it is low relative to a $3,500-class spatial-computing headset, but high enough to make the glasses a specialized purchase rather than an automatic upgrade. The idea that Meta is building a product ladder is analysis, not a stated company strategy.
Bottom line on the “cheaper than expected” claim
Yes—Meta Ray-Ban Display was cheaper than the earlier Hypernova expectations. The final $799 U.S. starting price came in below the reported $1,000-plus estimates and far below the approximately $1,400 speculation.
But the headline needs context. At $799, the glasses are still substantially more expensive than Meta’s non-display models, and they do not deliver full holographic AR. Buyers are paying for a limited color display, visual prompts and the Neural Band’s gesture controls, while still depending on a phone, Meta’s software and a relatively narrow set of use cases.
For people who specifically want glanceable directions, translation and notifications in ordinary-looking glasses, that may justify the premium. For everyone else, the cheaper non-display Meta glasses are likely the more rational choice. Anyone expecting Orion-style AR should wait rather than interpret “cheaper than expected” as “the full AR future has arrived.”
