The Mido Commander Gradient’s defining feature is a smoky, partly transparent dial that reveals components of its automatic movement. It pairs that unusual display with a conventional 40 mm Commander case, sapphire crystal, date and 50 m water resistance. Mido specifies up to 80 hours of power reserve. For the black PVD textile-strap reference, Mido’s international listing displayed CHF 990 including VAT when checked in 2026, while a 2020 review reported EUR 870 or CHF 940; those dated, region-specific prices are not a like-for-like comparison.
What makes the Commander Gradient different?
Mido announced the Commander Gradient on 22 April 2020 as a new design in its existing Commander collection, not as a new movement family. Its smoked acrylic dial fades toward a clearer center, allowing parts of the movement to show through from the front. A screwed transparent caseback provides a second view from the rear. Orange details add contrast to the black version.
Swatch Group described the idea in its launch announcement: “With the Commander Gradient, Mido dares to embrace the unexpected, showcasing a watch mechanism beneath a gradient dial that shifts from smoky to clear.”
This is not a fully skeletonized dial: the gradient leaves much of the face covered, and the opening emphasizes selected movement components. That treatment is the watch’s main visual proposition, but the sources do not establish how easily the hands and date can be read in different lighting. Anyone for whom legibility is decisive should assess the dial in person.

What does the black PVD version offer?
The central reference here is M021.407.37.411.00, the black PVD-coated steel model on a black textile-style strap with orange stitching. Monochrome’s 2020 hands-on review describes polished and satin-finished case surfaces, orange luminous accents, a date display and a black PVD folding buckle. Mido’s current listing describes the strap as black with synthetic front and back and specifies a butterfly clasp, so strap and clasp descriptions should be tied to the source and listing rather than assumed identical across all versions.
| Specification | Published detail |
|---|---|
| Case | 40 mm diameter; Mido lists 10.8 mm thickness, while Monochrome gives 10.84 mm for the reviewed watch. |
| Movement | Automatic Caliber 80 with date. Mido specifies up to 80 hours of power reserve; Monochrome identifies it as based on ETA C07.611 and reports 21,600 vibrations per hour. |
| Crystal and back | Sapphire crystal; screwed transparent exhibition caseback. Mido specifies an underside anti-reflective coating on the crystal. |
| Water resistance | 5 bar, equivalent to 50 m or 165 ft, according to Mido and the 2020 sources. |
| Lug width | 21 mm, according to Mido’s current product listing. |
| Warranty | Two years, according to Mido’s current product listing. |
The 80-hour figure is Mido’s stated maximum reserve, not an independent measurement. Likewise, 50 m/5 bar is the published water-resistance rating; it is not, by itself, a recommendation to use this watch for diving.

How much did the Mido Commander Gradient cost?
Prices differ by date, market and reference. They should not be treated as a direct price history or converted into a claim about today’s street value.
| Price reported | Reference and basis |
|---|---|
| EUR 870 or CHF 940 | Monochrome Watches, 16 June 2020, for the reviewed black PVD textile-strap reference M021.407.37.411.00. |
| $960 | Professional Watches, 23 April 2020, for the different stainless-steel bracelet reference M021.407.11.411.00. |
| CHF 990 including VAT | Mido’s international product listing for M021.407.37.411.00, observed in 2026. The page displayed the model as out of stock when checked. |
The launch-era prices and the later Swiss-franc listing are not a like-for-like comparison: the dates and market bases differ, and one launch-era figure concerns another reference. The current listing is not a US street price, and its stock message does not establish dealer inventory. No reliable current dealer-discount or secondhand-market valuation is established by these published figures.

Is the Mido Commander Gradient worth the price?
Its value proposition is feature-led rather than a demonstrated bargain against competing watches. The price buys a distinctive partially open smoked dial and exhibition back, a specified reserve of up to 80 hours, sapphire crystal, a date, and a 40 mm case rated to 50 m. Whether that package is worth the asking price depends chiefly on how much you want the visible-mechanics design and whether its dial works for your own reading preferences.
The styling also matters. The black PVD and orange-accent combination is more assertive than the alternatives Mido announced in 2020: steel versions on a metal bracelet, a black PVD version on a metal bracelet, and a steel version with rose-gold-colored PVD on a leather strap. The launch announcement lists those configurations, but prices for each are not established here.
