Minerva is the historic watchmaking name associated with Villeret, Switzerland; Montblanc is the brand that presents and uses that heritage in its current watch collection. Montblanc traces the story to 1858 and highlights Minerva’s chronograph calibres, distinctive movement architecture and hand-finishing. Its current catalogue includes both Minerva-branded watches and models sold under the Montblanc 1858 name.

What is Minerva in the Montblanc era?

Minerva began as a watchmaking enterprise in Villeret, not as a Montblanc product line. Today, Montblanc presents Minerva’s history and craft as part of its watchmaking identity, while its listings show that the heritage appears under both the Minerva name and the Montblanc 1858 name. That distinction matters: a Minerva-branded watch and a Montblanc 1858 Minerva-associated watch do not have the same product branding.

Montblanc’s heritage page is the basis for the historical account and its descriptions of continuity, methods and distinction. The page does not establish the legal or transactional history of Minerva’s association with Montblanc, so it cannot support a specific acquisition date or account of ownership terms.

How did Minerva’s watchmaking history develop?

Montblanc traces the Villeret story to 1858, when Charles Ivan Robert and his brother Hyppolite Robert founded the H. and CE. Robert Watch company. In the company’s account, Charles Ivan Robert worked as an établisseur, sourcing components from the region and assembling watches by hand.

Year Milestone
1858 Montblanc dates the founding of the H. and CE. Robert Watch company in Villeret to this year. It describes Charles Ivan Robert as sourcing components regionally and assembling watches by hand.
1887 Montblanc says Charles Ivan Robert registered the Minerva name and its arrow emblem.
1889 Montblanc reports that Minerva received a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition.
1902 Montblanc dates Minerva’s first in-house calibre to this year: an 18-line pocket-watch movement with a cylinder escapement.
May 1908 Montblanc dates the start of production of the 19/09 CH pocket-watch chronograph calibre to this month.
1912 Montblanc says the V-shaped chronograph bridge was patented in spring.
1927 Montblanc says Minerva patented a fluted bezel and an internal countdown rotating bezel for pilot’s watches.
1948 Montblanc dates the beginning of development of the Pythagorean calibre No. 48 to this year, describing its bridge layout as inspired by the golden ratio.
2025 Montblanc says its Manufacture introduced the M14.58 manual-winding movement, with an annual calendar, large date and worldtime with day-and-night indication.

Montblanc says about a dozen further calibres followed the first in-house calibre, with a focus on chronographs and counters. The milestones show why chronographs are central to the company’s presentation of Minerva: the story is not only about a name, but also about movement development and recognizable construction.

What makes Minerva chronographs distinctive?

The most immediately recognizable feature in Montblanc’s account is the V-shaped chronograph bridge. The company says it was patented in spring 1912 and treats the shape as a lasting element of Minerva’s identity. The 19/09 CH calibre, whose production Montblanc dates to May 1908, anchors the earlier chronograph history.

Montblanc also points to the 1927 pilot-watch bezel patents: a fluted bezel and an internal rotating bezel for countdown timing. These are historical claims made by Montblanc; the heritage page does not provide independent comparative evidence for broader rankings such as being among the first manufacturers to make such bezels.

What craft does Montblanc associate with Minerva?

Montblanc describes German silver as an alloy of copper, zinc and nickel, and says Minerva uses it for movement bridges and baseplates. The company also emphasizes hand-decoration on both sides of components, along with hand production, assembly and adjustment of hairsprings. These are Montblanc’s descriptions of Minerva’s methods, rather than independently verified production claims.
