Tyler, The Creator’s Cartier collection matters less as a tally of rare watches than as a portrait of how one person looks at design. It brings familiar shapes such as the Tank together with stranger pieces including the Crash, Pebble and Obus—and makes collecting feel like a practice of noticing form, color and feel, not just status.
What makes the collection different?
Its organizing principle appears to be personal taste rather than a checklist of famous references. Tyler told GQ, reproducing a 2023 interview with Robb Report: “I based a lot of my watch taste just off of how light it feels and how it could be colorful, too.” He has also said Cartier watches bring him joy.
That preference helps explain why his reported collection moves between watches that look immediately recognizable and designs that feel almost like jewelry. A rectangular Tank, a distorted Crash and a rounded-square Pebble do not make a tidy matching set. They show different ways a watch case can shape the experience of wearing one.
Which Cartier watches show that range?
Published accounts identify a varied group, but the exact inventory is not confirmed by Cartier. Some identifications are visual estimates, so they are best read as reported sightings rather than a definitive catalogue.

That contrast between the Tank and more unusual forms is central to the collection’s appeal. The Tank makes a familiar design language easy to recognize; the Crash, Pebble and Obus reward a closer look at how far Cartier can push a case shape.
Why do the unusual shapes matter?
Watch collecting often gives attention to movement, rarity and market value. Tyler’s choices offer another way to read a collection: through the physical impression of a watch on the wrist and the pleasure of an unexpected silhouette. The Crash looks as though a conventional shape has been bent; the Pebble turns a rounded square onto its point; the Obus makes the bezel part of the visual event.

GQ describes the Crash as a design from Cartier’s London branch in the 1960s, rather than treating the popular crash-accident origin story as established fact. That distinction matters: a compelling design legend is not the same as a verified account of how a watch was created.
The collection also complicates the idea that a watch has to be pristine to be worth enjoying. Robb Report quotes Tyler describing a worn, sweat-marked Crash and his attitude toward wearing the watches he buys: “I’m not spending all this money on these things that I claim I like and not enjoying them.” In this telling, rarity does not require keeping a watch untouched.

How has the collection influenced watch culture?
Its influence is most responsibly described as cultural visibility, not a measured sales effect. The Los Angeles Times quoted Thom Bettridge, then head of creative and content at SSENSE, saying: “His watch collection has brought watches into a new conversation with people who didn’t really care about watches.” That is an informed cultural observation, not evidence that Tyler alone caused a change in demand for Cartier or watches generally.
The V&A exhibition offered another measure of the collection’s distinctiveness. British GQ reported that Tyler’s Obus Quadrant was included in the exhibition, described as containing 350 Cartier designs and closing on November 16, 2025. Exhibition co-curator Rachel Garrahan said the choice was “more unexpected” among the Crash, Santos and Tank, and that the Obus was “a watch that isn’t represented otherwise.” The exhibition is historical context, not a current event listing.

What can the collection tell someone identifying a watch?
Start with the case rather than assuming every watch Tyler wears is a Tank or a Crash. The reported examples span rectangular, curved, rotated-square and deliberately distorted outlines. A clear view of the case, dial layout and bezel can narrow an identification, but press accounts sometimes use tentative wording or visual estimates. Without a confirmed reference number, it is safer to name the design family than to claim an exact model.
Cartier is the focus, but not the entirety of Tyler’s reported watch taste. GQ also mentions a Louis Vuitton Monterey II and a possible Cartier Duoplan sighting; the latter identification is explicitly uncertain.
What the collection says about collecting
Tyler’s Cartier watches matter because they make a persuasive case for collecting by instinct: choose pieces for how they look and feel, then wear them. The result can include a canonical Tank alongside a rare or eccentric design that many collectors might overlook. Rarity and history still matter, but here they serve personal enjoyment rather than replacing it.
