The Grand Seiko 62GS is the brand’s first automatic watch, introduced in 1967. Its defining feature is a bezel-free case: the crystal meets the case directly, giving the dial an open appearance and making the case sides part of the design. Grand Seiko revived the look in 2015, and contemporary 62GS models carry it across different sizes, colors and movement types.
Why Grand Seiko made the 62GS
Grand Seiko dates the original 62GS to 1967 and describes it as its first automatic model. The brand says it was created to address the thickness of automatic movements. That practical concern shaped a distinctive exterior: rather than add a bezel above the case, the crystal is fixed directly to the case. Grand Seiko’s 62GS account connects this construction to the design’s slimmer visual profile.

How the bezel-free case shapes the design
Without a conventional bezel framing the dial, the crystal meets the case at its edge. Grand Seiko says this lets the dial capture light and gives the case side greater prominence. The case, hands and indexes also use multi-faceted cuts, which the brand presents as part of the watch’s light-catching character. These are Grand Seiko’s descriptions of the design, rather than independent measurements of how the watch looks or wears.
The arrangement makes the case more than a housing for the movement: its side profile becomes a conspicuous part of the watch’s appearance. The result is a useful example of function and visual identity meeting in one construction choice—the solution to the perceived thickness of an automatic watch also created the 62GS’s signature look.

What changed in the 2015 revival
Grand Seiko says it revived the 62GS design in 2015, retaining its character while making the modern interpretation bolder and improving durability and comfort. The brand situates the 62GS among early designs reinterpreted with newer movements, manufacturing techniques and craftsmanship on its Heritage Collection page. Those statements describe Grand Seiko’s aims for the revival; they do not establish a model-by-model comparison of specifications or performance.

The 62GS is a design lineage rather than one fixed specification. Grand Seiko’s official pages show the design across different sizes, colors and movement families. A 2025 announcement from the Japanese Grand Seiko Boutique described the mechanical SBGH351 and SBGH353 as reinterpretations based on the contemporary 62GS design.
Availability depends on market and release timing. The US 62GS page lists SBGH376 and STGF387 and identifies SBGX363 and SBGX365 as January 2027 releases. Those future-dated models should not be treated as currently available; check the relevant regional page for current status. The examples are not a complete global lineup.
What to compare when choosing a 62GS
The design family’s variety means the name alone does not tell you which watch will suit you. Compare the actual reference’s movement type, case size and proportions, dial and color treatment, materials, and availability in your market. The official material establishes that the family varies in size, color and movement, but does not provide a complete, directly comparable specification and price set for these examples. It therefore does not support a model-by-model recommendation or a price comparison.

For vintage watches, the available official material is not a buying or condition guide: it does not establish a full list of original references, production totals, market values or inspection criteria. Those questions require reference-specific and condition-specific information beyond the design history described here.
