A MING 17-series watch can fit a broad range of wrists, but its 38mm diameter is only part of the answer. The 17.09 and 17.06 measure 43.9mm lug-to-lug and 10mm thick, with visibly flared, curved lugs. That lug-to-lug span, the case’s underside curvature and the strap’s usable length determine whether the watch sits flat or overhangs.
For the 17.09 and 17.06, MING specifies a 160–210mm (6.1–8.3in) wrist circumference. A 170–190mm wrist falls comfortably inside that stated range; a wrist near 160mm should be checked for lug overhang, and wrists outside 160–210mm need a different strap length or another documented option such as the 17.03 GMT bracelet.

What the key MING measurements mean
Three numbers answer most fit questions: case diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug length. Diameter describes the round case from one side to the other. Thickness affects how high the watch sits above your wrist. Lug-to-lug is the straight-line distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug. It is the dimension most likely to reveal overhang.

Those proportions are compact on paper, but the 43.9mm span can matter more than the 38mm diameter on a narrow, flat wrist. A watch fits best when the lug tips remain on the wrist’s upper surface rather than extending past its edges.

Wrist circumference is not the same as wrist width. Two people can measure the same circumference while having different wrist shapes: one may be broad and flat, another narrower and more rounded. Use circumference to select strap length, then use lug-to-lug and the lug curve to assess how the case will sit.
Why MING’s flared, curved lugs change the fit
The 17-series lugs are visibly flared rather than straight extensions of the case. On the 17.09, MING describes a “continuous twist” that runs from the case flanks through the underside of the lugs. The brushing continues along that twist while retaining the signature flare.
That geometry does two things. First, it gives the watch a longer visual footprint than a simple 38mm diameter suggests. Second, it can help the case follow a curved wrist, provided the lug tips do not reach beyond the wrist. The same shape also means a replacement strap needs hardware that clears the curved spring-bar position; a flat-ended strap may not sit correctly even when its nominal width is 20mm.

17.09, 17.09 x Massena Lab and 17.06: the published dimensions
| Reference | Diameter | Thickness | Lug-to-lug | Supplied strap | Stated wrist circumference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MING 17.09 | 38mm | 10mm | 43.9mm | 20mm, curved bars, quick release | 160–210mm (6.1–8.3in) |
| MING x Massena Lab 17.09 | 38mm | 10mm | 43.9mm | 20mm, curved bars, quick release | 160–210mm (6.1–8.3in) |
| MING 17.06 | 38mm | 10mm | 43.9mm | 20x18mm, curved fitting, quick release | 160–210mm (6.1–8.3in) |
The two 17.09 listings share the same case dimensions and stated strap range. The x Massena Lab version is supplied with a Jean Rousseau Paris strap, still 20mm wide with curved bars and quick release. The 17.06 uses a tapered 20x18mm strap specification: 20mm at the lugs and 18mm at the buckle end.
How each wrist size is likely to work
Around 160mm (6.3in)
This is the lower end of the documented 17.09 and 17.06 strap range. The strap can be within specification, but the case still needs a physical check. Measure the top of your wrist across the area where the watch will sit, then compare that usable width with the 43.9mm lug-to-lug span. If either lug tip extends beyond the wrist, the watch may rock or catch on clothing even though the strap closes correctly.
Around 170–190mm (6.7–7.5in)
This sits well inside the 160–210mm range. Most of the strap’s adjustment should be available, and the 38mm case should not look undersized simply because the wrist is larger. Check the exact hole or clasp position if you prefer a very precise fit, since the stated range does not identify where every adjustment point falls.

These wrists remain within MING’s published range for the 17.09 and 17.06. Confirm that the longest holes or clasp position leave enough tail length for your preferred fit. A circumference at the top of a stated range is technically covered, but comfort depends on how the strap’s adjustment is distributed.

Below 160mm or above 210mm
The cited leather-strap specifications do not establish coverage outside 160–210mm. Do not infer that the case will fit merely because it is 38mm. Look for a different strap length and verify its hole spacing, bar shape and stated wrist range. The 17.03 GMT bracelet is a documented alternative with a substantially broader 140–232mm (5.5–9.1in) range.
The 17.03 GMT bracelet is a different fit proposition
MING describes the 17.03 GMT as having flared lugs and an independently articulated bracelet designed to conform to a wide variety of wrist shapes. Its published 140–232mm (5.5–9.1in) wrist circumference range is broader than the leather-strap examples above.
Articulation matters because each bracelet link can change angle as it approaches the case and as it wraps around the wrist. That can reduce the rigid “straight strap” effect that makes a watch feel long on a rounded or narrow wrist. The 17.03 range should not be transferred to a 17.09 or 17.06 leather strap: these are different references with different supplied hardware.
Choosing a replacement or alternate strap
The most relevant search description is 20mm curved quick-release watch strap. MING documents 20mm curved quick-release straps on the 17.09 and the x Massena Lab 17.09, while the 17.06 is specified as 20x18mm with a curved fitting and quick release.

Before ordering, verify all of the following against the exact watch reference:
- Lug spacing: 20mm at the case for the cited 17.09 and 17.06 examples.
- Bar geometry: curved bars or a curved fitting, not just a nominally compatible straight bar.
- Release system: quick-release hardware must clear the case and sit securely in the lug recesses.
- Taper: a 20x18mm specification means 20mm at the lugs and 18mm at the buckle; a straight 20mm strap will look and feel different.
- Length: compare the strap’s actual long- and short-side dimensions with your wrist, rather than relying only on a generic small, medium or large label.
- Usable range: check the maker’s stated wrist circumference and where the holes or clasp sit within that range.
A strap can be the correct width and still fit poorly if its curved end does not match the case. Conversely, a strap that looks slightly different at the buckle end can be correct when the lug end, curvature and length are right.
How to measure your wrist and predict overhang
- Measure circumference. Wrap a flexible tape around the wrist bone at the position where you wear a watch. Keep it snug without compressing the skin. If you use string, mark the overlap and measure the string against a ruler.
- Record the result in millimetres and inches. Compare it with the 160–210mm (6.1–8.3in) specification for the 17.09 and 17.06, or the 140–232mm (5.5–9.1in) specification for the 17.03 bracelet.
- Estimate usable wrist width. Measure across the top of the wrist, not around it. This is the surface available for the 43.9mm lug-to-lug span.
- Check the case shape. The MING lugs flare and twist underneath. A curved case may follow the wrist better than a flat ruler suggests, but the lug tips should still remain supported.
- Allow for movement. Bend your wrist, rotate your hand and slide a finger under the strap. A case that only fits when the wrist is perfectly still is not a comfortable fit.
These calculations are measurement-based inferences from MING’s published dimensions and ranges, not a substitute for trying the watch on your own wrist. Wrist shape, strap stiffness and the chosen hole or clasp position can change the result.

The lugs overhang a small wrist
Overhang means the lug tips extend past the wrist’s supported surface. Recheck the 43.9mm span against your wrist width rather than the 38mm diameter. A shorter lug-to-lug case would address the root cause; changing only strap length will not pull unsupported lugs back onto the wrist. If you already own the watch, wear it slightly higher on the wrist and test whether the underside curve improves contact, but do not force a position that restricts movement.

The strap closes, but the watch feels loose
Strap circumference and case geometry are separate variables. You may be inside the 160–210mm strap range while using a hole that leaves the case able to slide. Try the next adjustment position, check that the quick-release bars are fully seated and ensure the strap is not twisted at the curved fitting.
A replacement strap will not sit between the lugs
Confirm the lug-end width is 20mm and that the strap uses curved bars or a curved fitting. A straight spring bar can place the strap edge against the case or fail to follow the lug’s underside twist. Never force the bar into place; a secure fit requires correct curvature and clearance.
The buckle or tail is awkward
At the upper end of a stated wrist range, the final holes or clasp position may not land where you expect. Measure the two strap halves and compare their adjustment holes with your wrist circumference. A different length can solve a buckle-position problem even when the watch head itself fits.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the exact reference: 17.09, x Massena Lab 17.09, 17.06 or 17.03 GMT.
- Write down lug-to-lug, not just diameter. For the 17.09 and 17.06 examples, that is 43.9mm.
- Match your measured circumference to the reference’s documented strap or bracelet range.
- Check whether the supplied construction is curved quick release, tapered 20x18mm, or an articulated bracelet.
- Compare your wrist’s top width with the lug span to identify possible overhang.
- For any replacement, verify lug spacing, curvature, release hardware, length and adjustment-hole placement.
The result is a more reliable fit decision than diameter alone. A 38mm MING can wear neatly on many wrists because of its proportions and curved lugs, but the 43.9mm lug-to-lug span and the correct strap hardware remain decisive.
